Fijian Envoy Elected President Of

United Nations General Assembly

History has been created as a Fijian

has been elected as the President of the
United Nations General Assemblys 71st
session for the first time.
Fiji's Ambassador to the UN in New
York, Peter Thomson was elected as
President.
Ambassador Thomson's candidacy was
put forward by Fiji and eleven other
Pacific Small Island Developing States
at the UN.
Fiji's ambassador, Peter Thomson, has
been elected as president of the UN
General Assembly, the first person from
the Pacific islands to hold the position.
He won the job in a two-way contest
with Andreas Mavroyiannis of Cyprus,
by a vote of 94 to 90 in the 193-country
assembly.
It was a rare election for the post of
president of the assembly normally a
single candidate is elected by consensus
without a vote.
Mr Thomson said his win recognised
that the 12 small developing Pacific
island states were playing an active role
in the UN.
"We're not just here to make up the
numbers, we're here to contribute as
well," he told Pacific Beat.
He said climate change and saving the
world's oceans would be at the top of his
agenda.
"Whether you look at ocean warming
or whether it's ocean acidification,
declining fish stocks, marine pollution
the ocean is dying, and we're here to
tell the world that is not good enough,
we're going to turn it around," he said.
Sustainable development goals a key
focus
Mr Thomson said he would push for
progress on achieving the UN's 17
Sustainable Development Goals.

agenda again if we're going to produce an

Nadi-San Francisco Selling Well

With the inaugural Fiji Airways NadiSan Francisco route flight ready for
take-off , the national airline has been
selling well and has seen good forward
intakes.
Fiji Airways Executive general manager
Corporate, Shaenaz Voss, said they
had anticipated this given the large
demographic of Fijians and other Pacific
islanders in the area (San Francisco).
Our inaugural flights to and from San
Francisco are showing good loads and
we continue to see healthy booking
trends, she said.
Fiji Airways has planned a special sendoff event for passengers onboard the
inaugural flights on both the Nadi and
San Francisco ends.
Well also be having a celebration
event on Saturday June 18 for trade and
San Francisco media, as well as partners
and invited guests from the local Fijian
community residing in the area, Ms
Voss said.
New Zealand Grammy-Award winning
artist now based in the US, Kimbra, will
also be performing at the function.
Shes flown with us a few times and has
become a friend and fan of the airline
and the country.
Fiji Airways will use its Airbus A330200s as well as the latest fleet addition
A330-300 for this service, depending
on aircraft rotation.
Possibility of made a permanent route
Fiji Airways has launched the Nadi-

San Francisco route as a seasonal

service which will run for three months
till August and then for another three
months from December till February.
We asked Ms Voss about the possibility
of making this a permanent route, to
which she replied: This will depend on
demand.
If demand supports year-round services,
then its something we will consider.
For now, well continue to work on
maximising our seasonal services.
This seasonal route will not have any
impact on the existing eight flights
going into Los Angeles (LAX), USA
weekly from Nadi.
Overall demand in USA

Ms Voss highlighted, generally, traffic

and demand out of the US has grown
year upon year and this is reflected in
the increase of their capacity and daily
services.
Naturally, you have your peak and your
trough periods, but overall, the United
States remains one of our strongest
markets, she said.
The first few months saw a slight
downturn as a result of back-to-back
natural disasters.
We are now seeing bookings recover
and demand return and increase further,
particularly in the dive and honeymoon
segments which Fiji is so well known
for as a destination.

his country was "regarded in a very

He said every government faced opposition.
"I don't think we should dwell on the
negative today," he said.
"Fiji is a country which I'm immensely
proud of I'm a fifth generation Fijian.
"There was not a stage even when I was
a political prisoner in Fiji, lying in the

immensely proud of my country and all
it does in this world."
He added: "[As president] I won't be
representing any particular country, I'm
there to uphold the charter of the UN, its
principles and purposes, for the good of
humanity."
He also pledged to keep pushing
for more transparency in the largely
ceremonial but high-profile post, after

his predecessor from 2013 to 2014 was

accused by US authorities of taking
$US1.3 million in bribes from Chinese
businessmen.
Mr Thomson will also oversee the
process of finding a new UN secretarygeneral to replace Ban Ki-moon at the
end of the year.
Mr Thomson will begin his term in
September at the start of the UN's 71st
General Assembly session.

Copra Millers Seek $0.5m Funding For

New Capital Investment

Copra Millers of Fiji Limited has

requested Government for $0.5 million
funding allocation for capital investment
in the 2016/17 National Budget.
This is to enable the state-owned enterprise
to invest in a whole coconut processing
facility to be set up in Savusavu. The
plant will then manufacture a variety of
coconut products.
This has been one of the submissions by
Copra Millers of Fiji to Government for
the next National Budget which will be
announced next Wednesday.
Company acting general manager, John
Deo, said with the facility setup, farmers
will just bring the whole coconut to
factory and all work will be done by
machines.
He said all components of whole coconut
will be used to make products.
Our aim is to move away from copra
into high value coconut products like
Virgin coconut oil, coconut water,
coconut flour, coir, activated carbon,
animal feed and other byproducts of

coconut, he said.
Copra Millers has started with
investment into Virgin Coconut Oil plant
which is expected to be commissioned
by September this year.
Copra price support
The other submission has been to
increase raw material copra supply to
$0.5 million or review the copra price
support level from current $780/tonne to
$900/tonne.
Mr Deo said: We request Government to
provide raw material copra price support
of $100/tonne to Copra Millers of Fiji.
The estimated copra purchase for 2016
is 5000 tonnes with total funding coming
to $500,000. This can also be done by
increasing the copra price support level
from $780 to $900 per tonne of copra.
Impact and the need
The grant to Copra Millers of Fiji is
expected to have a positive effect on
company operations, livelihood of
Fijians and the economy.
This should also include direct benefits

to the company operations and impacts

on the whole supply chain, Mr Deo
said.
Yes, government funding is necessary
for sustainable development and growth
of the Fijian coconut industry.
There was no development of new
products by the company since it
established.
The company is not in a position to pay
better prices for farmers since it is selling
single product which is also exposed to
world market price fluctuations.
The government support is needed
to grow the company into diversified
products giving multiple products and
revenue streams.
With multiple products, the company
will be in a position to pay farmers better
price for raw materials and bring the
glory days of Fijian coconut industry.
Government support is needed up to the
stage of upgrading the current facility
into Whole Coconut Processing and the
company will be self-sufficient.

Pacific Cement Exports Not Feasible With

Bridge Weight Restrictions

The 18 tonne weight restriction on

the Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge is making
exports not feasible for Pacific Cement
Limited.
The company, owned by Fijian Holdings
Group, exports close to 200 containers
per month to the Pacific Island countries
with each container weighing 25 tonne.
But because of the temporary weight
restrictions, it now has to package
half the containers, bring it to Suva
side and then repack it to full 25 ton
capacity.
Fijian Holdings Group chief executive,
Nouzab Fareed, said: As a result, our
export is becoming not feasible we are
running at break-even.
Mr Fareed said they did use the barge

to send across some of their shipment

but there needs to be enough volume to
make using a barge feasible.
But, he said the shipping schedule is
such that the ship doesnt go to their
export destination every week and it is
spaced out.
So even if they take the container on
a barge, there would be no place for
storage as barge can take containers for
immediate shipping.
Another thing Pacific Cement has had
to do is send the containers across the
bridge after midnight when there is no
traffic.
Mr Fareed emphasised: We are not
blaming anybody but it is becoming a
cumbersome process and our margins

are becoming totally eroded.

The solution suggested
Mr Fareed sees building an alternative
closer route to Suva as the solution to
this whole problem which can pop up
again at any time.
The solution only short term is fixing
the bridge but in the long run, we need
an alternative option to reach Suva
avoiding Lami, he said.
There are a few bridges from Suva to
Lami this is only one there are two
more. So what happens if something
else happens to the other bridges?
Mr Fareed suggested Government could
look at having a road from Namosi
connecting into Suva as a permanent
alternative.

We Will Go Ahead With Harvesting Labasa Cane Farmers

Farmers in the North confirmed they

will go ahead with harvesting cane as
cane processing begins at the Labasa
Mill.
They were responding to a statement
from the National Farmers Union
claiming Labasa cane growers are
demanding an additional $10 a tonne
payment before they begin harvesting
for the 2016 season.
The NFU said growers had requested
the Sugar Industry Tribunal Fiji Sugar
Corporation and the Sugar Ministry that
crushing at the Labasa Mill be delayed
until the additional payments are made.
The statement was made following a
NFU meeting at the Labasa Civic Centre
on Saturday. Close to 500 cane growers
are said to have been in attendance, the
NFU claimed.
Fiji Sugar Corporation executive
chairman, Abdul Khan, when contacted
yesterday said he could not comment on
this issue.
Similarly, Fiji Sugar Cane Growers
Council chief executive, Sundresh
Chetty, said he was not aware of this
issue and could not comment either.

david@fijitimescanada.com

The cane farmers had already begun

harvesting cane.
Farmers confirmed they will start
dumping cane at the Labasa Mil.
It is understood the first tipping of the
cane for processing will be done by Tui
Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.
Farmers assure no boycott
The individual cane growers indicated
they have no intention of boycotting the
harvesting.
Somendra Prasad of Qelewaqa, Labasa,
said he had attended the meeting but
there was nothing about boycotting
harvesting.
Thus, he said he will go ahead with his
family and harvest the cane.
Farmers had raised their concerns
that they needed additional funds to
assist them harvest their cane, pay for
larbourers and supply cane to the mill,
he said.
Bhisun Deo, a cane farmer of Vunicuicui,
Labasa, said he was not aware of the
meeting on Saturday and was still going
ahead with harvesting in cane.
Another cane farmer from Tabucola,
Labasa, Dharmen Gounder, said

according to his understanding, all

farmers in his area wanted to harvest.
No one can afford to boycott because
at one point in time we have to harvest
cane and if we dont it is us, farmers
who are going to suffer in the long run,
Mr Gounder said.
Another cane farmer, 40-year-old
Vinodan Chetty of Wailevu, said he did
not hear about the meeting but would
not be affected because he had labourers
and felt work must continue.
My forefathers have been working in
this six acre farm and I have continued
in good faith, Mr Chetty said.
Therefore, I will continue with the good
work by supplying cane to the mill.
Reason for demand
Union general secretary, Mahendra
Chaudhry, said cane growers had said
during the meeting they did not have the
funds to commence harvesting because
of the low fourth cane payment of only
$11.12 a tonne.
They do not have sufficient funds to
engage labour and pay for all other costs
associated with harvesting and delivery
to the mill, he said.

Immigration NZ Clarifies PAC Draw

Criteria

Immigration New Zealand clarified the

criteria for the Pacific Access Category,
the ballot draw for which took place last
week. The Fiji Pacific Access Category
(PAC) allows up to 250 people to be
granted residence each year. Queries
were raised when the ballot results
were published as only 125 registration
numbers were listed.
FijiLive spoke to Immigration New
Zealand Area Manager (Pacific Region),
Rex Heesterman who clarified the issue.
In order for us to fill this cap of 250
people we have to select sufficient
numbers of registrations from the ballot
to reach this total. So last week Friday
when I hit the select button, 125 Fiji
Pacific Access Category Registrations
were randomly selected from the ballot
and those 125 registrations selected
actually cover a total of 325 people.
(Some registrations have only one
person included, some two people
and others include whole family
units.). We overdraw the number
of registrations/people to compensate

for those selected from the ballot each

year who might for any number of
reasons, decide not to formally apply
under the Pacific Access Category so it
is not quite an exact science, he said.
Mr Heesterman said following Fijis
participation once again in the Pacific
Access Category last year, Immigration

New Zealand approved and granted

residence visas to 251 Fijian citizens
who were drawn from last years ballot,
meeting the 250 capacity. The drawing
of the 125 registration last Friday will
be believe, enable us to meet the 250
people cap again this coming business
year that begins on July 1st.

(PSV) drivers was one hot issue raised

during the Budget forum for disabled
people at Brown St in Suva.
Geoffrey Ralifo, who is a member of the
Fiji Disabled Peoples Federation, said
PSV drivers always ill-treat the disabled
community.
I have been ill treated by the taxi
drivers. I am a disabled person and the
way I walk, the taxi drivers do not allow
me to sit in their vehicle, he said.
Despite the many complaints raised with

said it has never been addressed.

Another participant said most taxi
drivers fail to drop off disabled people
at the drop off zone or to their respective
destinations.
They always stop from a distance and
it becomes very difficult for people with
disability to move, he said.
The Attorney-General and Minister for
Finance, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, took
note of the submissions and thanked
them as well.

My Father, A Great Role Model

Youngest daughter Evelyn Moti says
her father, the late Director Criminal
Investigations
Department
Senior
Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kishor
Kumar was a great role model.
Evelyn, 24, paid tribute to his dedication
to service.
My father was a brave man and for him
his work was his first priority then his
family, she said.
He was a person who supported people
whether it be emotionally or financially.
He was an amazing person. We always
looked up to him while growing up and
he always taught us to be independent,

Evelyn said.
She expressed her best moment with her
father was when she used to play soccer
a few years back and won the Best Player
of the Tournament award while her father
was cheering for her from the pavilion.
My father was such that even a stranger
becomes a friend to him.
Most of the people know us through
my father.
He used to talk to everyone and was a
good friend to me and my siblings, she
said.
She described her father as the best
father, best friend in the world.

Her father always supported her

throughout her life and it was very hard
to accept that he was no longer with them.
It is still hard for us to accept the fact
that we will not be seeing him or hearing
from him anymore, she said.

The accused was 67-years-old at the

The court heard that at the time of the
incident she was scared and didnt know

Defence lawyer Aquila Naco requested

the court to consider his clients age as a

Bottle Collector Gains Fans

He leaves early in the morning to collect
bottles and cans and returns with sacks
full, but never does he seek help to carry
the load.
These were the words of a taxi driver,
Penijamini Ravonokula, who sees

laughed at, Sinha continues to do his
job as a bottle collector with one motive
to keep Nadi Town clean. He starts
collecting at 4am every day.
Recognised for his work in Nadi, Mr
Sinha has attracted attention from those
who are big fans of his work.
Mr Sinha who lives in the Nadi Town
area with his mother and sister said he
has been doing this for the past 20 years,
and although he gained fans for his
work, he fears of how others perceive
his job.
I am worried people may think wrong
of my job and laugh at me, Mr Sinha
said.
Mr Sinhas story came to light after
Herleen Emily Kumar wrote a letter to
the editor titled Job equality. In the
letter she claimed that she saw a bottle
collector being teased at while on her
way to school.
Mr Sinhas mother said her son started
earning income after he left school early.
I am happy that my son is able to earn

Shatrugan Sinha with his mother Kamla Nair at their home in Nadi
for us in an honest manner and we are
never embarrassed of his job, Mrs Nair
said.
She said no one had ever helped them
when they needed help even after
Cyclone Winston.
No one came to help us when there
was flooding at our place and things got
displaced, Mr Sinha said.

Apart from earning from his daily

collection, Mr Sinha believes that his
job helps keep Nadi clean.
I collect bottles and cans everyday
while people throw them in public
places without any care, he said.
Mr Ravonokula said Mr Sinha is a very
hardworking man and deserves applause
and recognition for it.

DPC Ligairi Calls For Change In Attitude

Deputy Police Commissioner Isikeli
Ligairi called on top Police officers to
learn how to respond appropriately to
victims of gender based violence.
If a woman cant turn to us for help when
she has become a victim, then who else
can she turn to? DPC Ligairi questioned.
DPC Ligairi was speaking when opening
a workshop on Gender Based Violence,
Human Rights and Law at the Labasa
Civic Centre attended by the top ranking
officers in the Northern Division.
This workshop is designed to help
us understand the sensitive nature of
responding appropriately, to female
victims
reporting
gender-based
violence, DPC Ligairi said.

david@fijitimescanada.com

Sometimes our work does become

monotonous and we become complacent.
However, complacency has no place in
the enforcement of laws about gender
based violence.
DPC Ligairi said he would not tolerate
any officer trying to bend the rules
because of their personal beliefs on the
subject of violence against women and
gender based violence.
All of us have been given the
responsibility to enforce Fijis laws
which are clearly defined so there is no
other way around that in as far as our
role as law enforcers is concerned, Mr
Ligairi said.
Through our work and quick response

we can instill confidence to members of

the public that the Fiji Police Force is
serious about addressing crimes against
women and children.
The workshop is the third in a series
of four, facilitated by the Fiji Womens
Crisis Centre and funded by UNDP,
for all of the Fiji Police Forces senior
officers around the country.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Womens Crisis
Centre co-ordinator Shamima Ali said
they were going to look at reported
statistics on sexual assault.
The objective of the workshop is to
develop, create and make strategy plans
to provide better responses within the
Fiji Police Force.

Government Endorses Fiji Chamber

Becoming A Parent Body

Government has endorsed the move

by the Fiji Chamber of Commerce and
Industries (FCCI) to become the parent/
apex body of all chambers in the country.
The move will basically mean each of
the towns and cities will still have their
own chambers but these will be affiliated
to the Fiji Chamber of Commerce and
Industries.
In giving Governments endorsement,
Minister for Industry Trade and Tourism,
Faiyaz Siddiq Koya, said Government
wanted to promote the interest of
businesses in Fiji.
He said they needed district chambers
to formerly engage with FCCI for
inclusion structure and for them to work
in the collective interest.
There is also a need for proper reporting,
feedback and consultation to be established
with the FCCI with all other chambers
around the country, Mr Koya said.
FCCI President, Peter Mazey, said their
concern was some of these chambers
have just evolved and do not have
standard mechanisms in place.
Meanwhile, the entire Suva Chamber of
Commerce and Industries membership
and structure will be alleviated to Fiji
Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
This will mean the existence of the Suva
Chamber will be with FCCI and will be
basically where FCCI is existing.

Fiji Chamber vice-president, Nouzab

Fareed, said this is normal international
practice which they have now
implemented.
So what happens to the existing chambers
now? The FCCI will slowly rope in the
chambers to become a member of this
parent body.
What happens if they do not agree? The
chambers can exist but they cannot use
the word chamber in the name of the
organisation anymore.

Man Accidently Buys Stone With

Potatoes

A 65-year-old man from Toga in Nausori

was amazed and got a shock of his life
when he discovered a stone disguised as
a potato after shopping at a supermarket
in Nausori this week.
"My family were planning to have
curry and roti for dinner. I quickly ran
to Nausori Town to get potatoes among
other ingredients for the curry that my
wife was going to make," said Josefa

Yabakivou in an interview.
Mr Yabakivou rushed into the
supermarket and packed some potatoes
without realising he had packed a stone
shaped like a potato.
"When I went home and started peeling
them, I noticed the peeler on a hard
potato. I then realised that I had bought
1.14kg potatoes with a stone.
"I went back to the supermarket to be

compensated and a staff member gave me

two potatoes which were not proportionate
to the weight of the stone," he said.
The supermarket manager said the
potatoes were imported from overseas.
"This is the first case for the supermarket
and we ask the customer to visit the
supermarket and we will deal with this
problem accordingly," the supermarket
manager said.

IF you're already headed out to beautiful

Tivua Island for the day, why not jump
at the chance to dive the island's fringing
reefs?
Viti Watersports is a five-star PADI
dive operation that has partnered with
Captain Cook Cruises Fiji to offer diving
on both their Tivua Island day trip and
multi-day Reef Endeavour trips to the
Mamanucas, Yasawas and northern Fiji.
"The dive we offer at Tivua Island is
one of the cheapest dives in Fiji at the
moment," said managing director of Viti
Watersports, Michael Agnew.
On Tivua, there are three options for
divers. For the complete novice, there is
the PADI Discover Scuba course which
takes around 2-3 hours to complete.
The dive starts out in the warm shallow
waters just off the beach where divers
can discuss dive theory and familiarise

themselves with equipment and

breathing techniques before heading out
to do a 12m dive further offshore.
The leisurely dive off the beach
introduces divers to towering coral
bommies crowned with statuesque sea
whips, translucent sponges and colourful
corals while brightly coloured fish flit
between coral heads and sluggish sea
cucumbers plough the reefs sandy depths.
If you're lucky, you might even spy the
elusive "ghost pipefish" or be stared
down by a suspicious moray eel.
For something a little more challenging,
an exciting new dive site is the
"Raiyawa" wreck which lies just off
Tivua Island at a 28m depth.
In her former life, the 30m long MV
Raiyawa was a government ship that
serviced marker buoys in shipping
channels throughout Fiji.

Decommissioned and stripped of her

dirt, oil and engines, larger holes were
cut in her structure to allow experienced
divers' easier and safer access to her
hull.
That was just four months ago and
divers are already raving about the sea
life that have made this artificial "reef"
their home.
At just 10-12m, the wreck's ghostly
silhouette looms out of the depths
beckoning divers to explore her nooks
and crannies all the while being greeted
by her curious inhabitants.
"Fiji's waters are gloriously warm
and the weightlessness from diving is
amazing you absolutely have to dive
here," said Mr Agnew. Viti Watersports
operate out of Port Denarau and
Matamanoa Island in the Mamanuca
Group.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has

given the green light to Pacific Islands
Tax
Administrators
Association
(PITAA) Interim Head of Secretariat to
set up a Permanent Secretariat in Fiji.
This after the signing of the Host Country
Agreement between Minister for
Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola
and Interim Head of Secretariat for
PITAA, FRCA acting chief executive,
Visvanath Das.
We hope this will help promote
closer cooperation and coordination of
information sharing in tax administration
and policy formulation in Pacific Island
countries, Mr Kubuabola said.
Mr Das said: Today marks another
milestone achievement for the PITAA
Secretariat. After the signing, the

PITAA Secretariat will now recruit staff

for secretariat positions to fully operate
and prepare for the next PITAA Heads
meeting.
It is anticipated the new office will
be fully functional from September
following the 13th PITAA Heads
Meeting that will be hosted here in Fiji.
The secretariat is grateful to the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their
cooperation and assistance.
With the Governments assistance, the
PITAA Secretariat aims to provide a
forum for Pacific Island countries to
discuss and share experiences on tax
administration and policy issues.

Fiji being the hub of the Pacific will

lead and support its PITAA members to
improve their capacity and capabilities,
Mr Das said.
We are looking forward to set up a
fully-fledged PITAA Secretariat in
Fiji and help promote international tax
administration standards in the Pacific.
PITAA Background
PITAA is a regional organisation that was
established in 2003 with a membership
of 16 countries.

The Toddler Whose Body Was Found

'Intact' 17 Hours After Alligator Snatched
Him At Disney Resort

This is the 2-year-old boy whose body

was recovered from a lagoon at the Walt
Disney World resort in Orlando after he
was snatched by an alligator.
Lane Graves, the son of Matthew, 42,
and Melissa Graves, 38, of Elkhorn,
Nebraska, was identified for the first
time by Orange County Sheriff Jerry
Demings.
Demings confirmed that dive teams had
found an "intact" body in the Seven Seas
Lagoon. He said divers found the body
in the man-made lake at around 1.45pm
local time and it was pulled out of the
lagoon around 3.30pm.
Although the body has not been officially
identified, Demings says there is no
reason not to believe that it is not Lane.
The Graves family were on the third day
of their holiday in Orlando when tragedy
struck on Tuesday night. Lane had been
wading in a ''no swimming'' area at the
upscale Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
at around 9.20pm when he was attacked
and dragged underwater by the 'gator.
His father ran out into the water and
tried to wrestle him from the reptile's
clutches to no avail.
During the search, wildlife officials
caught and killed five alligators in the
lake and they say they will now use
forensics to determine whether they have
already euthanised the 'gator responsible
for the attack. If not, officials promised
to continue searching the lake for the
creature.
Sheriff Demings said the Graves
appreciate the prayers that have come
from well-wishers. The family are
hoping to move forward with a proper
burial, Demings added.
Matthew Graves is the chief data officer
at tech company Infogroup, where
he has worked since 2008, according
to his LinkedIn page. He graduated
with a degree in advertising from the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has
an MBA from Regis University.
He has also served as a board member
for the Greater Omaha Chamber of
Commerce.
The Chamber issued a statement
expressing condolences on Wednesday.
CEO and president David Brown
said: 'The loss of a child is a special
kind of tragedy, particularly hard to
comprehend.

david@fijitimescanada.com

"Our thoughts and our prayers are with

the Graves family during this time of
unthinkable sadness. Matt has served
on our Chamber Board since 2013. We
stand ready to assist him, his wife and
family as they grieve the loss of Lane."
The discovery of the boy's body comes
after a Disney lifeguard revealed to the
Daily Mail Online that the boy was 3m
from the shore when he was snatched. It
was previously reported that the boy was
only in ankle-deep to 30cm of water.
The employee told the Daily Mail
Online even at 3m, the water is "not too
deep". "We have lifeguards on duty at
the play area but at the beach we don't

have any lifeguards because you're not

supposed to be in the water," they said.
The Seven Seas Lagoon behind the
upscale hotel is off limits to guests,
and "no swimming'' signs are posted
nearby - but none of them warned about
possible alligators in the water, like the
signs posted at the Polynesian Village
hotel next door.
The Disney worker said that the father
was the first at the scene and then the
lifeguards rushed in. But nobody was
able to save the child from the alligator,
which was up to 2m long. The father
sustained lacerations to his arm trying to
pull his son from the 'gator.

Caregiver Accused Of Stealing

$270,000 From 91-Year-Old

A caregiver is facing criminal charges

after she allegedly stole over a quarter of
a million dollars from the bank account
of the 91-year-old Coquitlam woman
for whom she was working.
Coquitlam RCMP say Antonette Dizon
of Burnaby withdrew close to $270,000
over a one year period after stealing
the elderly woman's bank card and
somehow obtaining the PIN number.
Dizon, 49, has been charged with theft
over $5,000. She had worked for the
victim and her elderly husband for a
year and a half.
"The victim was really caught off guard,"
said Const. Jaimie Phillipson. "She felt

there was so much trust between her and

the caregiver she didn't want to believe it."
Phillipson says it appears Dizon was
withdrawing money from the victim's
account on almost a daily basis.
Police launched an investigation after
the victim reported the money missing.
They gathered evidence from bank
machine surveillance cameras.
Phillipson says many expensive and
recent purchases have been seized from
Dizon's house, however it will be difficult
for the victim to recover all her money.
Dizon has been released on conditions
and is scheduled to appear in Port
Coquitlam provincial court June 27.

Canada To Begin Collecting Exit Passport

Data

Minister of Public Safety Ralph Goodale

has announced that Canada will begin
collecting passport data from people
leaving the country.
Its nothing more or less than what
you find on page two of your passport,
Goodale told reporters on Wednesday.
And that is the full name, the nationality,
the issuing authority and the gender of
the traveller.
The same information is already
collected when people enter Canada.
Collecting such data upon departure
will put the country in line with allies
like the U.S. and the U.K.
Having this data will allow us to
better respond to amber alerts, for
example, on missing children, Goodale
said. It will help us deal with human
trafficking, it will help us deal better
with illegal travel by terrorist fighters,
it will help (Minister of Immigration)
John McCallum deal with immigration
proceedings and visa applications, and
it will help us ensure the integrity of
Canadian social programs.
When leaving Canada by land, American
border officials will collect the data and
send it back to Canadian officials. When
leaving the country by air, airlines will
simply provide passenger manifests to
the Canada Border Services Agency.
All information will be retained for 15
years.
While the plan will enhance international
security, it will also serve to keep tabs
on snowbirds wintering in the U.S. to

determine their legal residence, monitor

the residency of people attempting
to dodge taxes, and stop people from
illegally collecting millions of dollars in
government employment benefits while
out of the country. The Canada Revenue
Agency and Employment and Social
Development Canada expect to save
between $194 million and $319 million
over five years once system is fully in
place.
Paul Frazer, president of PD Frazer
Associates -- a government relations
and business strategy consultancy firm
-- believes that the new system is long
overdue.
I think that for Canada in particular,

if its going to be responsible for its

borders it needs to know whos
coming and going, the one-time
Canadian ambassador told Power Play
from Washington D.C. The going is
as important as the coming these days
given the reality of the world.
Goodale reassured Canadians concerned
about their privacy.
We will have written arrangements
with the United States about what
they may do and may not do with the
information, he said. If we find that
American officials are not complying
with the privacy arrangements that we
have put in place, then we can terminate
the arrangement.

Chinese Woman Gets 26-Month Prison

Term For Immigration Fraud

A Chinese woman is starting a 26-month

prison term for immigration fraud.
Yunjuan Li was sentenced at the
Christchurch District Court after
pleading guilty to six charges of
supplying
false
or
misleading
information to an immigration officer.
She also pleaded guilty to a representative
charge of producing a passport knowing
it to have been fraudulently obtained.
"Over a period of years, Yunjuan Li
successfully duped a number of people
and organisations into believing she
was someone else," said Peter Devoy,
Immigration NZ (INZ) assistant general
manager.
After being declined a visa to New

david@fijitimescanada.com

Zealand, Li enlisted the assistance of an

international travel agency to change the
identity of her and her 18-year-old son,
obtaining fraudulent Chinese passports
for both of them.
Under her new identity, Li was approved
a visitor visa in 2005 and went on to
marry a New Zealander the following
year.
She was granted residency under her
false identity in 2011.
She was arrested last year after an

investigation by INZ revealed the full

extent of her offending.
"INZ will not stand by while people
commit immigration fraud," said Mr
Devoy. "The message is clear - we will
find you and take you to court."
INZ is reviewing Li's liability for
deportation, he said.
Her now 30-year-old son, Bao Li, was
sentenced to 300 hours of community
work and placed under a community
detention order for his offending.

Barley Cuts 'Bad Cholesterol', Heart

Disease Risk

Consuming barley as food or in food

recipes can significantly reduce the levels
of "bad cholesterol" that are associated
with heart disease risk, finds a new
study, suggesting that barley has similar
cholesterol-lowering effects as oats.
The results showed that barley reduced
by seven per cent both low-density
lipoprotein, or LDL and non-highdensity lipoprotein, or non-HDL.
"The findings are most important
for populations at high risk for
cardiovascular disease, such as Type
2 diabetics, who have normal levels
of LDL cholesterol but elevated levels

of non-HDL or apolipoprotein B,"

said Vladimir Vuksan, scientist at St
Michael's Hospital in Canada.
Barley has a lowering effect on the total
bad cholesterol in high-risk individuals,
but can also benefit people without high
cholesterol.
High cholesterol and diabetes are the major
risk factors for heart disease and stroke.
Measuring non-HDL and or apoB -- a
lipoprotein that carries bad cholesterol
through the blood, provides a more
accurate assessment for heart disease
risk, as they account for the total 'bad
cholesterol' found in the blood.

Despite its benefits, barley is not as

well established as some other healthrecommended foods -- such as oats,
the researchers rued, adding that barley
consumption by humans has fallen by
35 per cent in the last 10 years.
Barley is high in fibre, has twice the
protein and almost half the calories
of oats as well as an important
consideration for people with weight or
dietary concerns.
The review, published in The European
Journal of Clinical Nutrition, included
14 studies on clinical trials conducted in
seven countries, including Canada.

Delicious Detox Waters To Burn Body Fat

A dvice for everyone wanting to stay
fit is to drink plenty of water. But the
goodness of water can be enhanced
simply by adding some interesting
elements to it. "While infused water
has the benefit of being full of flavor,
it also has no calories, making it a very
powerful tool in your efforts to lose
weight and gain better health," shares
nutritionist Shikha.
We bring you some infused waters that
are brilliant for you...
Fruity detox water
Fruits are an extremely important part of
your diet but many nutritionists advise
against juicing them up. You can enjoy
the goodness of these fruits by adding
them to water. It even makes for the
perfect summer drink. So how do we go
about it? Slice a watermelon, strawberry
and kiwi and put these in a bottle of
water. Let it sit for a few hours and you
have a bottle of fruity goodness.
Lemon, mint and cucumber detox water
Want to slim down? You must have
heard the 'evergreen' drink up advice.
Drinking plenty of water is considered
to be the perfect detox but if you add
a couple of more elements to it, it can
work on speeding your metabolism
and flushing the toxins out effectively.
Here's the recipe: Add a handful of mint,
sliced lemon and cucumber to a bottle
of water. Let it sit for a couple of hours
and your detox drink is ready. If you
want, you can have 2-3 bottles ready for
optimum results.
Apple cinnamon slimming water
Want to enjoy a zero calorie drink? If
you are thinking about Coke Zero or
Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi, they will never

david@fijitimescanada.com

solve the purpose. You can make your

own zero calorie drink. Here's howThinly slice an apple and take a few
cinnamon sticks. Add them both to a
bottle of water and let it sit in fridge.
You can add apples and cinnamon sticks
as per your taste. If you want a stronger
taste, add more quantity of fruit.
Aloe drink
Aloe is detoxifying and supports the
immune system. Not only that, it also
lowers cholesterol and blood sugar.
Consuming aloe water is very good for
your digestive system. You can take
readymade aloe juice but the fresher
it is, the better will be the results. To
prepare fresh aloe drink, slice aloe leaf
into two and scoop out the pulp. Mix it
with equal amounts of lemon and a cup
of water in a blender.
Lemon ginger detox water

Ginger is known for its pain relieving

properties and also for being a
wonderful detox agent. So lemon mixed
with ginger makes for the perfect detox
recipe. To prepare this water, you have
to take a bottle of water and add half
a lemon juice and half knob of ginger
(grated). Make sure the ginger you use
is fresh. This makes for a perfect daystarter, something that can be consumed
as the first thing in the morning. Lemon,
of course will help flushing out toxins.
Watermelon water
Watermelon is a rich source of vitamins
and minerals and is also a brilliant
source for flushing out toxins from your
system. Add it to your water to enjoy
its detoxing benefits. Cut chunks of
watermelon and add to water. Keep it
in the refrigerator for a few hours and
enjoy this infused watermelon water.

If you frequently suffer from acidity,

drink a glass of lukewarm water
every day before going to sleep and
immediately after waking up in the
morning.
-Eat an overripe banana to beat an
especially bad bout of acidity, as they
tend to contain more potassium which
makes it the perfect antidote.

-Have cold milk without any additives

like sugar. You could mix it with a spoon
of ghee to make the remedy even more
effective.
-Boil one cup of water and add 1 tsp
of aniseed (saunf). Cover and leave
overnight. Strain the water in the
morning and add 1 tsp of honey. Take
this three times a day to prevent acidity.

Aries

Businessmen and entrepreneurs are

expected to move into consolidation
mode this week. This is due to Mercury
changing to enter its own sign, the
communicative airy Gemini, to join
Venus and Sun already posited there.
Do not aim for anything big for the
moment. Instead, focus on strengthening
your existing work. First look at lateral
growth that will help you build a solid
base; then consider moving vertically.
Financially, you will be in a shaky
position. Try and save as far as possible.
Around the weekend, Venus enters
a watery cardinal Sign Cancer. This
change will boost your money situation.
You can now heave a sigh of relief.
Good time to party and socialize with
friends and near ones. With regards to
health, if there are complaints related to
respiratory system, get it treated at the
earliest.

Taurus

Financial fitness is the key word this

week. Mercury changes to enter its own
airy and mutable Sign Gemini. You
will now exploit opportunities to boost
earnings and create wealth. There is a
possibility of incurring expense to meet
some urgent need in the family. You
need to make a family budget which
includes regular spends and unexpected
outflows. With two strong planets having
influence over the House related to
money matters, emergency may knock
on your door even at odd hours. Thus,
you will need to increase provision for
the family. Bachelors will be under
pressure to find a suitable life partner to
settle down. Over the weekend, ruler of
your Sign Venus shifts into a watery Sign
Cancer. Health will be okay this week.
But be watchful about viral infections
and take due preventive steps.

Gemini

There is good news for you, as the

week begins. Powered by the ruler of
your Sign, the crafty Mercury, you will
be raring to go. Mercury enters your
Sign at the beginning of the week. This
will enable you to get to the bottom of
problems intelligently and tactfully.
It will also increase your acceptance
level considerably. You will now be
motivated to perform better and feel
more fulfilled. Transit of retrograde
Mars may keep job holders on their
toes. A sense of insecurity is likely to

david@fijitimescanada.com

creep in. Businessmen could face stiff

competition here. You could probably
offer something special to attract
customers. Around the weekend Venus
enters the sensitive watery Sign Cancer
that is bound to bring love in the air for
you and your partner. You could also
come across some good opportunities
to make money. If you play your cards
well enough, you could push up your
bank balance.

Cancer

The week starts with mundane tasks

of little importance. You will be in a
subdued mood. But by WednesdayThursday, there will be agitation and
irritability that sets in. You will be
restless to break boundaries and move
ahead. Unfortunately, your stagnant
situation will continue for a while as
Moon is transiting over retrograde
planets. Do not get deterred, just
persevere. Patience is the key here. This
week you will spend wisely because of
the influence of Mercury changing sign
to enter own airy Sign Gemini. Around
weekend, Venus enters your sign. This
will make you joyful and romantic.
However, be cautious about a new
relationship, especially when forging it
with a person from the opposite sex.

Leo

There are some moderate earnings on the

cards for you in the coming days. This
will be facilitated by crafty Mercury
entering its own sign, the intelligent
and knowledge hungry Gemini. It is
also a good time to network and build
contacts with influential people who
will enhance your prospects in general.
Job holders will be depressed for not
getting the seniority and position despite
the qualification. Singles romantically
attracted to someone special will do
their best to be their charming best.
Those already in love may be in
two minds about making long term
commitments. Do not act in haste, or
else you may repent forever. Think
calmly! Around the weekend, Venus
changes to enter cardinal Sign Cancer,
twelfth from your Sign. You will be now
be in an extravagant mood and spend on
luxuries and pleasure seeking activities.
However, do not go over the top with
your spending; save for tomorrow.

Virgo

A favourable change in planetary

position takes place at the beginning
of the week. The ruler of your Sign

19

Mercury entering its own other Sign,

the versatile Gemini, will sharpen your
ability to think clearly and conclusively.
Sales persons and professionals will get
some leverage because of this position
to negotiate big deals. You need to be
attentive about requirements of the
customer and try to fulfill them in the
best possible manner. Over the weekend,
Venus, still combusted, enters a watery
Sign Cancer. With three planets of
different nature influencing your Sign,
issues in personal as well as marital life,
may become difficult to resolve easily.
Those with chronic health issues need
to be careful. Also, the ones with joint
pains or dental complications will need
to take preventive measures.

Libra

Life can be pretty hectic sometimes! This

week as you try to balance the demands of
your professional and personal life, you
may feel exhausted. Fortunately, Librans
are good at maintaining equilibrium and
staying poised, so you may not be in
such a bad condition. Mercury changes
sign to enter own Sign Gemini at the
beginning of the week. Now you can
expect lady luck to back your efforts
to move ahead, make progress and also
benefit monetarily. Household related
expenses may increase here. In view of
this, you may have to juggle around with
your budget. At the end of the week,
Venus enters a cardinal Sign Cancer.
Combustible Venus does not seem to
favour singles to develop romantic links
at this moment. Those married will also
not be too happy here.

Scorpio

You could be in a hurry to boost your

earnings this week. However, with
retrograde Saturn transiting through the
House related to financial matters, you
need to trade carefully. Do not be lured
by short cuts to make a quick buck.
Instead remain focused on what you are
doing currently. Job holders can take up
some kind of part time assignment to
shore up income. Businessmen need to
look for more customers to earn more.
Mercury changes sign to enter own Sign
Gemini at the beginning of the week.
Not much encouraging change for you
here. Around weekend, Venus shifts into
a watery Sign Cancer, the 9th from your
Sign. The urge to earn more money may
become strong now. Just the thought and

prospect of earning more will distract

and throw you off track! The need of
the hour for you shall be to stop day
dreaming and get in touch with reality.
Only then will the results follow.

Sagittarius

This week the comforting news is about

Mercury, crucial for communication
and liquid money, entering versatile
Gemini, in opposition to your sign and
Saturn transiting therein. This enables
you to handle obstacles in routine
work intelligently. Those in business
can now look forward to start work on
development, expansion or new projects.
Job holders will need to wait a while
for better days. Those married will sulk
and fret this week. The best thing for
you at this moment is to be diplomatic
and sort out differences sensitively
with your spouse. Health issues related
to respiratory system may need urgent
attention. There is a possibility of your
getting hurt accidentally. Falling from
height is a possibility. So, you might
want to stay away from precarious
heights for the next few days.
Capricorn
This
week
businessmen
and
entrepreneurs could be gripped by
anxiety due to dip in sales. In a bid

to stabilize the situation, they may

undertake a short business trip to
explore new territory, but even that turns
out to be a damp squib. Try to revive old
contacts to strike deals or start a venture.
Mercury changes sign to enter its own
sign intelligent Gemini. This brings in
positive news. Businessmen will now
have enough reason to smile as benefits
and gains start happening. Job holders
may get a good chance to showcase
their inherent ability here. There is a
likelihood of some serious differences
occurring in an important relationship
caused by retrograde Mars transiting
through Scorpio. Clash of interests
seems to bring the disagreement to
the fore. Resolve this tactfully without
losing your cool. Over the weekend,
Venus enters the watery cardinal Sign
Cancer in direct opposition to your Sign.

Aquarius

Mercury enters its own Sign Gemini,

at the beginning of the week. This will
help you gain financially, and shall
strengthen your position. Mercury also
helps you think clearly and manage
your money intelligently. However,
businessmen will need to be attentive
about their dues from customers. There
is a strong likelihood of some of it going
down the drain. Singles will have to
make their moves smartly to win over

someone from the opposite gender. You

may also get into physical intimacy with
an older person. There is no romance,
no love, only sensual gratification here.
Over the weekend, Venus changes sign
to enter sensitive Cancer. This may lead
to a minor setback for those in business.
Diabetics need to be careful in the
coming days.

Pisces

This week you will be busy trying to

mend fences. You and your spouse
will work on reconciliation and
settlement in the coming days prodded
by transiting Moon. However, igniting
that old fire may be a tough task. The
influence of retrograde Saturn could act
a fire extinguisher here, unfortunately.
Mercury shifts into own Sign Gemini.
You will now be better placed to handle
domestic matters. Businessmen will
also be able to chalk out their plans
intelligently. Though opposition of Sun
and Saturn may keep you stressed with
not much confidence. Hold on to your
fort; do not look for any major changes.
Job holders will be able to rise to the
occasion here by finishing complex
tasks within the challenging deadlines.
Around the weekend, Venus enters
Cancer. Be careful about your health at
this juncture. You may fall prey to some
infection.

Father Traded Ultrasound Image To Prove

He Was Serious About Making Child Porn,
Brisbane Court Hears
A father who sent ultrasound images of
his unborn daughter to an FBI operative
did so to show he intended to make
child pornography when she was born,
a Brisbane court has heard.
The 25-year-old man was arrested in
January last year by AFP officers after a
tip off from the FBI in the United States.
The court heard he sent an ultrasound
photo and 12 images of child
pornography to an FBI operative.
On the same day, he also told the
operative his wife was due to give birth.
The man has pleaded guilty in the
Brisbane District Court to possessing
child exploitation material and using
a carriage service to access child

pornography material.
Commonwealth
prosecutor Aimee
Sanderson told the court why the 25-yearold sent an ultrasound image of his
unborn child to an undercover operative.
"The purpose of this was to prove to
the FBI operative that the user was
serious about trading child pornography
material," Ms Sanderson said.
"He said that he intended to make his
own child pornography material with his
daughter and will trade those images."
Worst case judge has ever seen
The court heard he was found in
possession of 6,435 images and videos
of child exploitation material across
three devices.

Some were of cartoons, but thousands

were of actual children and babies.
Ms Sanderson said many of the children
were showing signs of distress and pain.
Judge David Reid described the man's
actions as "unbelievable".
"Quite frankly, I think it's the worst case
of child exploitation material I've seen,"
Judge Reid said.
The man also pleaded guilty to trading
images between himself and others, as
well as accessing child pornography.
The court heard the man had been
groomed and abused at a young age.
Judge Reid said his prospects for
rehabilitation were limited and adjourned
the sentencing hearing to a date yet to be set.

The first posters of Great Grand Masti

featuring Riteish Deshmukh, Aftab
Shivdasani and Vivek Oberoi are finally
out....
Omg! How excited are we? Its time to
make way for this crazy trio
Adult comedies do really well with our
audience. The plot is easy to absorb
and you get to watch/hear jokes that
you probably time and again share with
your friends. Masti started off on such
a note. Starring an insane combination
of Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi
and Aftab Shivdasani, the film gave
us all the reasons to ROFL. The jokes
were funny and werent even below the

belt. Speaking of which, soon, came its

second installment titled Grand Masti.
That too was a major hit with a similar
kinda plot relying on double meaning
jokes, hot chicks and all that shizz. But
if you thought that was about it then
watch out boys and girls, the trio is back
with their third venture now titled, Great
Grand Masti. Yes!
The first posters have just hit the web
which in one word has made us really
RESTLESS for the film now. I mean,
just look at them! If one has the three
popping their heads out in between hot
booties. The other one has an equally
contrasting picture of their sad faces

with the ladies smiling happy. Doesnt

it come out clear that the film is going
to be all about affair, extramarital affair
and everything that involves, love sex
and dhoka? Haha! No offense but its
exactly what we can make out from the
above posters.
Not to forget, the film also stars a
bombshell in the form of Urvashi
Rautela. Maybe shes going to be the
eye candy for Riteish, Aftab, Vivek and
of course, you men out there.

Divyanka Tripathi And Vivek Dahiyas

Wedding

Yeh Hai Mohabbateins Divyanka

Tripathi and KawachKaali Shaktiyon
Ses Vivek Dahiya will tie the knot on
July 8
Heres all you wanted to know about the
most anticipated event of the television
industry
Television queen Divyanka Tripathi is
going to tie the knot with fianc Vivek
Dahiya on July 8. After keeping their
relationship under wraps for a long
time, Divyanka got engaged to her Yeh
Hai Mohabbatein co-star Vivek earlier
this year in a private ceremony.
The wedding will be a private affair and
would take place in July. Divyankas
family wanted it to be a traditional
wedding where the groom comes to
the brides hometown to take away her
dulhania. Vivek had told in an interview
that the Baarat will reach Bhopal
(Divyankas hometown) on July 7 for
the sangeet and wedding which is on the
next day. Then the couple would leave
for Chandigarh on July 10 for their
reception. Divyanka and Vivek also
plan to host a reception for their friends
from the TV industry in Mumbai later
as they do not plan to invite more than
100 or 150 people as they want it to be a
close-knit affair.
Vivek Dahiya had said earlier that he
is not very well versed with fashion
and that he will hire a mens designer
for his wedding outfit. It is being said
that Divyankas lehenga would come
from Viveks place as its a tradition in
their culture. Divyankas parents and
in-laws are taking care of their wedding
trousseaus while Vivek and Divyanka
just give approvals on Whatsapp since
they are busy with work. Divyanka
might wear red, pink or gold while
Vivek would just match his tie or
pocket-square with her chosen hue.
As the two are busy with their respective
shows, their parents and Divyankas
sister (whos in Bangalore) have taken
the responsibility to make all the
arrangements. The actors barely get
time from their tight schedules to go for
shopping. Whenever they meet, all they
discuss about is marriage preparations,
designers, venue bookings etc. In spite

david@fijitimescanada.com

of being so busy Divyanka managed

to sneak out from her sets for some
jewellery shopping. Both the actors
family are very co-operative and dont
want the actors to stress. They have just
asked them to get free before one week
of their wedding.
Divyanka and Vivek are trying to wrap
up as much shoot as possible before
they take the leave for their wedding.
Divyanka is working overtime to shoot
for Yeh Hai Mohabbatein while Vivek is
shooting for his new serial Kavach and

Yeh Hai Mohabbatein simultaneously.

The production house has allowed Vivek
to take a leave only once in 10 days for
shopping.
Vivek and Divyanka will take off their
honeymoon once theyll be done with
all the wedding events. Vivek has kept
the honeymoon destination a surprise
for his wife. Considering, the couple
had celebrated their first Valentines Day
in Sri Lanka, it can be said that their
honeymoon destination will be nothing
less than exotic.

Fish Manchurian
Ingredients
Oil for shallow frying or deep frying
250 gms fish fillet
1 tbsps. Corn flour
1 tbsps. Plain flour
Sauce ingredients
3 garlic cloves minced
2 tbsps. Green parts of Spring onions
(I used onions since I did not have
spring onions in hand, if you use onions
separate the layers)
2 tbsps. White part of spring onion
each of green and red bell pepper
cubed
tsp. corn flour (optional)
1 tsp. soya sauce (you can reduce little)
1 tsp. vinegar
2 tsp. red chili sauce
tsp. sugar
Marination ingredients
Salt very title
tsp. Soya sauce
tsp. Pepper powder
1.5 tsps ginger garlic paste
Instructions

pieces
-Add Soya sauce, ginger garlic paste,
and pepper powder. Mix and marinate.
Set aside for at least 30 mins.
-Add the sauces to a bowl and set aside.
-Heat a pan with oil for deep or shallow
frying or preheat the oven and bake.
-Add 1 tbsps. each of Corn flour
and Plain flour, little salt and stir well.

david@fijitimescanada.com

Sprinkle some water and mix to coat the

fish with flour. The batter should not be
runny. Fish has to be coated with a thin
layer of batter
-Fry the fish pieces to golden on a medium
flame. Drain these on absorbent tissue.
-After you finish frying fish, drain the
oil from the pan retaining 2 tbsps. oil in
the same pan
-Add garlic and fry till it gets fragrant.
Add capsicum, layered onions (white
parts of spring onions) and fry on high
flame for about 3 mins. Onions and
capsicums should be crunchy (not over
cooked) and not soft.
-Stir the sauce mix. When it bubbles,

add fish. To make a gravy version, pour

the corn flour mixture first. Allow it
to thicken on a low flame, it gets done
quickly. Then add the fish.
Switch off the heat and stir well.
Garnish with chopped spring onions
Notes
The color of your dish can vary
depending on your red chili sauce
If you are using salmon to prepare this
dish, you need not use egg since this fish
remains moist and soft after frying too.
But if you are using any other kind, you
could use 1 small egg to lock the juices
in the fish so that they remain soft, juicy
and moist after frying.

Las Vegas Black Knights? A Look At What

Goes Into Sports Team Names

What's in a name? When it comes to a

pro sports team, quite a bit.
With an NHL expansion franchise
expected to begin play in Las Vegas
during the 2017-18 season, speculation
is already beginning to swirl about what
the team will be called.
Black Knights keeps coming up because
the Vegas expansion bid is run by a
company called Black Knight Sports
and Entertainment, the same name as
prospective owner Bill Foley's financial
services company. Foley graduated from the
U.S. Military Academy at West Point, which
calls its sports teams the Black Knights.
With that in mind, here is a rundown of
some recent nicknaming decisions and
some of the factors that were at play.
NEW ORLEANS PELICANS (NBA):
The Charlotte Hornets moved to New
Orleans for the 2002-03 season but
switched their name to the Pelicans in
2013. The brown pelican is Louisiana's
state bird. At the time of the switch,
team owner Tom Benson noted that the
Hornets nickname "didn't mean anything
to the community" and added that "the
pelican represents New Orleans, just like
the Saints."

david@fijitimescanada.com

OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER (NBA):

When the Seattle SuperSonics moved to
Oklahoma City in 2008, they abandoned
the Sonics nickname and decided to call
themselves the Thunder. The 45th Infantry
Division that is based in Oklahoma City
has a Thunderbirds nickname. Oklahoma
also is part of Tornado Alley, making the
Thunder nickname appropriate.
CHARLOTTE HORNETS (NBA):
When the New Orleans Hornets
switched their name to the Pelicans,
it cleared the way for Charlotte's
expansion team to start calling itself
the Hornets. The expansion franchise
originated as the Charlotte Bobcats in
2004, but team owner Michael Jordan
said season ticket holders and fans
"overwhelmingly" wanted the Hornets
name back. The change didn't come
cheap. Costs included changing the
name and logo on everything from
uniforms to letterhead to office signs.
Pete Guelli, the team's executive vicepresident and chief sales marketing
officer, said changing the name would
cost about $3 million.
TAMPA BAY RAYS (MLB): Tampa
Bay's expansion franchise began play

in 1998 as the Devil Rays, which was

chosen from among 7,000 suggestions
offered by fans. They announced late in
the 2007 season that they would switch
their nickname and chose the Rays over
candidates that included Cannons, Stars,
Wave and Dukes. While the Devil Ray
was a type of fish, the Rays nickname
was more of a reference to the sun and
weather. Stuart Sternberg, the team's
principal owner, said the switch would
give the franchise a new identity and
added that "we were tied to the past, and
the past wasn't necessarily something
we wanted to be known for." Sure
enough, in the first year with the Rays
nickname, Tampa Bay posted its first
winning season and reached the 2008
World Series.
HOUSTON TEXANS (NFL): The three
nickname finalists for Houston's NFL
expansion franchise were Stallions,
Apollos and Texans. The Texans
nickname previously had been used
by the AFL's Dallas Texans before
they moved out of state and became
the Kansas City Chiefs. Although the
Texans didn't begin play until 2002, they
decided on their nickname in 2000.
