Lesson Plan

Grade/Subject: Grade 5 Math

Duration: 60 Minutes

Unit: Multiplication/ Division Lesson

Outcomes from Alberta

Program of Studies
Apply mental mathematics strategies and
number properties, such as:
skip counting from a known fact
using doubling or halving
using patterns in the 9s facts
using repeated doubling or halving
in order to understand and recall basic
multiplication facts (multiplication tables)
to 81 and related division facts.

Learning Objective
The students will apply their
knowledge of multiplication in 2
ways: a worksheet and a Minute
Math Drill.
I can multiply by 2-digit by 2-digit
and complete a Minute Math
Drill.

Assessments
Formative: The Minute Math Drill will allow the teacher to see how
well the students have improved since their first Minute Math Drill.
This will show the teacher how much the students understand about
strategies and multiplication. The 2-digit by 2-digit worksheet will
allow for the teacher to see how well the students understand the
concept of the multiplication.

Procedure
Introduction ( 5 Minutes):
Hook/Attention Grabber: I have this question on the board and I need
some help solving it Can someone help me please?
Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Having students come up and fix my
problem on the board and having them explain it to the class will
show how well students remember the previous lesson.
Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: Students will participate in
class discussions and work quietly as individuals as needed.
Transition to Body: Lets do some more examples as a class before I
let you work on some by yourself.

Body ( 30 Minutes):
Learning Activity #1: Whole Class Instruction
The teacher will guide the students through a few examples as a
class. The teacher should also explain why it is important that the
students show their work while solving the questions.
Lets go over a few examples together as a class. (Do a few examples
with the students) Can anyone tell me why it might be really
important that you show us your work with these questions?
Assessments/Differentiation:
How are the students grasping the cross multiplication concept? Do they
understand the steps? Do the know why it would be important to show their work?

Learning Activity #2: Worksheet as individuals

The students will work on a worksheet that was previously given to
them.
I would like you to quietly work on these worksheets (show example).
You will be given ____ minutes and then we will go over a couple of
the questions as a class. I would like you to try and get through most
of the worksheet.
Assessments/Differentiation:
The worksheet will allow students to show the teacher what they understand about
2-digit multiplication. What are the students having issues with throughout this
activity?
Weaker students will be given a multiplication chart.

Learning Activity #3: Minute Math Drill

The students will complete a Minute Math Drill.
We will now complete the last Mad Minute that I will do with you! It
would make me really happy if you all made this one your best one
yet! So please try really hard. You will be given your normal 3
minutes.
Assessments/Differentiation:
This activity will show how the students have improved over the unit.

Closure ( 5 Minutes):
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: After the past couple of
lessons, do you still think 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication is scary?
Feedback From Students: Actions: are they interested in learning
about the concept? What is their body language telling you?
Feedback to Students: Thank you everyone for doing so well today.
Transition to Next Lesson: Take out your agendas quietly please.
