You use the Past Simple with these

in 2000
a week ago

expressions:
e.g.: Yesterday I played football.
e.g.: I walked to school the day before

yesterday.

e.g.: Last year I travelled to Spain.


e.g.: In 2000 I had long hair.
e.g.: I ate pizza a week ago.

REGULAR VERBS
AFFIRMATIVE
Most verbs:

infinitive + -ed

Verbs ending with

play played

a vowel + consonant

double the consonant + ed

travel travel + l + ed = travelled


stop stop + p + ed = stopped
worked
Verbs ending with

a vowel + y

work

dont double the consonant

play played
stay stayed

Verbs ending with

a consonant + y
study studied
tidy tidied

the y changes to i + -ed

NEGATIVE
Subject + didnt + infinitive
She didnt work last month.
NOTE
Did/Didnt means the sentence is already in the past. So,
it isnt necessary to add ed to the main verb. You dont say I
didnt worked, but I didnt work!

INTERROGATIVE
Did + subject + infinitive
Did she work last month?

There arent any rules. You have to learn them!
