UNIT 3 ASSIGNMENT 3

INTRODUCTION

Hi I'm Spencer Wells, today I will be pitching an idea for a


new documentary to be broadcasted on Channel 4 in the
near future.
My programme is based on the topic of video game
addiction, more specifically on the game World of Warcraft
since it is rated one of the most addictive games ever.

WHAT IS ?

World of Warcraft is the king of MMORPG games which was


released in 2004 and has peaked at over 12 million players!
Many people are addicted to World of Warcraft and there are
many reasons why.
Most people believe the game is so addictive because it is a
never ending game and there is always new things to do.
There is also the social aspect to the game, some people
mainly just play to socialize with the other players in the
world.

CHANNEL 4

The 1 week period between April 18-24 Channel 4s average viewer


count was just over 1.2 million.
The documentary will be 60 minutes in total with two 3 minute
advert breaks.
Channel 4 is a public-service TV broadcasting channel which began
in 1982 and is largely self funded. And is also one of the most
popular channels in the UK.

THE PROGRAMME

Games Addiction: Warcraft.


My target audience is from teenagers, the majority age group
that play the game but also the parents of the people addicted
to video games.
Wednesday
The program will be aired twice on the Wednesday, 5pm and
9pm.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Music from World of Warcraft game music.


The introduction of the documentary will tell people exactly what the game
is so everyone watching knows exactly what the game is.
There will be 2 sets of adverts during my documentary which will be 3
minutes each.

Closing credits will have everyone's name who contributed to the


production and special thanks to people who made the program eligible.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Introduction to game addiction and addiction to World of Warcraft


Specifically and talk briefly about why people may be addicted and talk

LOC ATION

All scenes will be filmed in the homes of the people we will be


interviewing.
The only other locations involved will be at the home of the video
editors where they will edit and create the complete documentary.

RECCEE

Firstly we will speak to the person we came to interview and ask them
general questions first like, When they started playing World of Warcraft
and why, then we will interview family member on how there addiction is
effecting there lives too.
All the interviews will take place in there own home, we will try and ask as
many of there family member to come and visit us at there home to talk
about there relatives addiction to world of Warcraft and how its also
effects them.
We will do this so the viewers can see that just one person being addicted
to this video doesnt just effect the life of the individual but also the family
members around them on a day to day basis.

FACILITIES

Through out filming the whole documentary we will need our video camera
with us at all times to film to film everything anyone says within related to
the documentary in every facility we visit.

There is very few facilities that will be filmed for the programme, most of
them being just inside the homes of the people we are visiting about there
games addiction.

TALENT -

I will be the person interviewing the people who are addicted to World of Warcraft,
not just because it will save a lot of money for the production, mainly because iv
also played a lot of World of Warcraft so it will be interesting to see there view on
the game compared to mine.

I will not be paying my self anything to be the interviewer for the documentary
since I am the person producing it.

PROPOSED PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE

The only planning that has been made for the documentary is the programme structure and also
some of the questions we will ask the interviewees.

When interviewing in there home will we first meet all there family members before starting any
interviews, we will first interview the person with the addiction then family members, afterwards we
will interview our main interviewee again asking them what they think of some of the comment which
there family members made about there addiction.

There will be no filming in any studio since we do not need one for the production of this
documentary.
All editing and publishing will be done at the home of one our editors, with a top range computers
with editing software already installed. This saves us a lot of money on our budget.

We will interviewing the people with World of Warcraft addiction and. there family
member like mentioned earlier.

There are countless amounts of gaming forum websites with World of Warcraft
threads talking about all types of topics about the game whether its about the
addictions or other things, most World of Warcraft forum threads are mainly topics
about things actual in the game.

For my research I will look and gather information from the World of Warcraft
Reddit thread, the forums on the World of Warcraft websites but also looking at
some other World of Warcraft based websites like Wowhead and MMOchampion
since these are the most popular World of Warcraft internet forums.

There has been many reports of people who were heavily addicted to World of
Warcraft and actually died while playing the game for an excessive periods of time,
For example there has been many reports of people from the Asia region who rented
a private room at local internet cafs and playing for over 40 hours straight, no food
or drink and then being found dead in front of the game.

When Blizzard are advertising there next World of Warcraft expansion it also gets
very good advertising responses all the time. I think the main reason for this is that
they will release a beta version of the game to well known World of Warcraft players
who livestream and make videos on YouTube of there new upcoming content.

This will be the first World of Warcraft addiction programme to be aired on


channel 4, other documentaries based on World of Warcraft addiction have only
been uploaded to sites like YouTube and they gather a lot of views!
The average viewers watching channel 4 is just over 1.2 million as of last month
so we are aiming to getting over the average viewers count for our
documentary with a viewer goal of 1.5 million.

AUDIENCE RESEARCH

The age of our target audience will be people between the age of 12-21 because video
games addiction is very popular within that age range we are also targeting the parents of
people who play a lot of video games to raise concern.

There isnt really a certain gender that we are targeting but if it came to a choice, our
target gender would be male since that more males have video game addiction compared
to females.

Since our target age is 12-21 we are targeting young people who are between high school
and university stages of education.

MARKET RESEARCH

This section is about how World of Warcraft do a good job of advertising there game when
they are releasing a new expansion. Firstly they will revealed it at the World of Warcraft
convention which Is held every year and straight away from being revealed people can already
pre order the upcoming expansion.

people can pre order the new expansion they will start advertising it in the games client to all
the other World of Warcraft plays who missed the first revelation.
They will also release YouTube video showing features and sneak peaks of the new expansion
and they will do live Q&As for the community about there new release. Closer to the release
they will then target the people who essentially know nothing about World of Warcraft by
advertising it on the biggest TV channels, often the TV adverts will be a small preview of the
new expansion then showing the viewers the release date and where they can buy it.
So from looking at there advertising there advertising techniques you can see that the trying to
keep there current players playing longer and keeping them the game for as long as possible
compared to people who have never heard of it before.

EVALUATION

I think the main thing to keep in mind is that video game addiction is an
actual thing, its more than just someone that enjoys playing video games it is
a real addiction, like smoking for an example.

This documentary will be useful for young people to see that if they get too
indulged in video games that it could be a risk but it is also an eye opener for
parents who have children that play a lot of video games in there spare time.

STATISTICS
More men play World of Warcraft than women and I think most people would already think
that because females generally dont tend to play as much video games as males overall in
the video game industry, how ever there are a lot of females playing World of Warcraft, the
gender ratio of the people who play World of Warcraft is 80:20, so 20% of all the players
who play World of Warcraft to this day which is about 10 million are females, thats around
2 million females playing this game!
When it comes to the demographics of the people that play World of Warcraft you can see
that most of there player base is on the younger end of the line with 29% of there player
base being people between ages 16-20 years of age
37% of there player base being aged between 20-25
18% 25-30
1% 40-50
0.5% of World of Warcrafts player base being over the age of 50.

FINAL PITCH

I think you should choose my documentary to be aired on channel 4 because I


dont think a lot of people have a full understanding about video games
addiction.
My documentary will benefit the public because it will raise a lot of awareness
about video games addiction, especially those who play a lot of video games and
the parents of those who spend most of there hours playing video games.
I think this is a well worth topic since video games addiction is one of the most
popular upcoming addictions over the past few years.
