Abstract:
Keywords Solar Energy; Clean Energy; Empowering Communities
It is a fact that artificial light is extremely important for the
development of the man as an individual and in society.
However 1.3 billion people which represents 19% of world
population are still suffering from the lack of electricity and
thus of electric light in their homes. The NGO Liter of Light
designed a cheap and efficient solution to enlighten
communities without access to an electrical source and thus
improve the quality of life of its inhabitants, especially on
issues such as security and education.

This paper suggests a way to make this solution more

efficient and an example of its application in the city of
Campina Grande, Brazil.
The solution consists of lampposts with a very simple
technology that uses low cost and recyclable materials, a small
solar panel and a battery. With the implementation of those
light poles, it is intended to decrease the likelihood of violence
in the streets, encourage education and promote the movement
of people at night, warming up the local market, improving and
empowering the community.
