Walking in the air for Cromer charity

About With Friends member Peter White doesnt let his disability
stop him from reaching for the sky and so on the 29th June
he will be walking in the air to raise money for the Cromer
based charity. Peter is going to do a Wingwalk in the skies over
Gloucestershire when he will be strapped standing to the top
wing of a biplane flown by an experienced member of The Flying
Circus Aerosuperbatics team.
Peter, who works in the About With Friends Community Shop
in Garden Street, Cromer every Tuesday and Thursday had
already done parachute jumps to raise money for other charities
and he decided he would like to help raise money towards a new
minibus for the organisation who are well known in Norfolk.
As well as laying on a busy programme of social activities for
children and adults, the charity also has a popular Workskills
programme where more than 50 adults with a learning disability
come to work on 1 or more days each week. This might be in the
Community Caf in Ticker Street, in the Catering or Gardening
teams; in the Community team that provides lunch clubs for the
over 55s and visits residents in Halsey House. Some members
also make craft items and woodwork products which are sold in
the Community shop where Peter works.
The charitys big red minibus has been a regular sight across
Norfolk (and as far afield as Belgium) for the past 8 years and is
desperately in need of replacement. Peters brave Wingwalk will

088 final.indd 2

help raise a lot of money towards the new bus.

Dear Editor
A recent article in a rival publication
stated that the new crematoria on the the
Holt Road will cost three millions pounds.
If the story had appeared in Crabtales
I would of course taken this for a
typographical error or a ball..ahem, slip-up
by the Editor. The repair to the promenade
cost three million pounds and that rose to
take into account storm damage. In the
same issue of this journal, there was a
story of fifty-eight new homes to be built
in North Norfolk which will cost just over
three millions. What are we talking about?
A chapel of sorts with an oven attached
and a big chimney with a wee stretch of
road leading to it. How can

it cost so much?
As we are on the subject, and I dont
want to cause alarm and despondency,
but if you think about there is someone
now happily going about their business,
perhaps even reading this letter, who is
destined to be the first customer of that
crematoria. A sobering thought. Ive
not been feeling too chipper meself just
lately...
Yours Sincerely,
Philip Graham
Editor. We of course never make mistakes
and check and recheck the verasity of all
our articles....within reason!

Baconsthorpe Village
School 200 YEARS
OLD Happy Birthday!
Baconsthorpe School was opened in 1816
one year after the battle of Waterloo,
for the children of Baconsthorpe and
Hempstead. It was built mainly by public
subscription. Those who were unable to
contribute financially gave their labour
for free by carting stone from a quarry
2.5 miles away and residents also went to
Cley port to collect building materials that
were imported from Belgium.
It was one of the first National schools
in England. National schools were
founded by the National Society for
Promoting Religious Education. These
schools provided elementary education,
in accordance with the teaching of the
Church of England.

Dear Editor,

I Would like your readers to consider the following.

NATIONAL EU REFERENDUM CAMPAIGN GOES
TO THE SEASIDE IN NORFOLK TO FLAG THE
ENVIRONMENTAL CASE TO REMAIN.
Before Britain joined the European Union, raw sewage was
discharged in to the sea, beaches had to be closed for bathing and
the country was known as the dirty man of Europe, an East of
England Euro MP has told a national environmental campaign
event for the EU Referendum, held at Cromer Beach in Norfolk,
today (Sunday 29 May).
Labours Richard Howitt MEP said the EU blue flag status
awarded to Cromer beach, four others in North Norfolk and
24 across East Anglia, made it safe to swim for families and is
crucial to attracting tourists to visit.
A thirteen year old Walsham school student, Hannah Berry, said
Britain remaining in the European Union was vital for the future,
who attended after volunteering to help through the cross-party
European Movement, who organised the event.
Holding a beach ball emblazoned with the slogan Remain for
Nature, Richard Howitt MEP told the event:
Before Britain joined the European Union, 25 per cent of our
beaches were unfit for swimming, but when the EU bathing
water law was proposed, the then British Government opposed it
as undue interference.
Instead the EU blue flag scheme has led to 95 per cent of
British beaches being safe for swimmers, and the excellent
status achieved in here in Cromer and at beaches across East
Anglia, is crucial to underpinning 90,000 jobs and 4.5billion of
tourist income to local business.
Pollution in our sea or in the air, or the carbon emissions which
cause global warming, will never stop at a line on the map. The
environmental case for Britain to remain in the European Union
is overwhelming.
Praising Environmentalists for Europe who had joined the
European Movement to organise todays event, Richard Howitt
MEP quipped:
The Chair of Environmentalists for Europe is Boris Johnsons
Dad, and if you cant even persuade your own father, why should
anyone else believe the leave case?

6/6/2016 7:49:24 AM

Dear Sir,
Freedom of speech has for generations granted to every
freeborn British person the right to grumble about our leaders and
rulers, our managers and others in authority over us.
On May 6th the EU removed that right, not that many would
know it from the silence in much of the media (source: Daily
Telegraph).
The European Court of Justice ruled that the right to complain
about, or otherwise point out, the failings or wrongdoings of the
EU Commission is illegal and gave the Commission the right to
legally punish individuals who damage the institutions image
and reputation.
Interestingly, from an historic viewpoint, almost the same
words were used in the Enabling Act of 1933 which allowed the
German government to abolish civil liberties including rights
of free speech which were not restored in that country until 1945.
Dont take my word for it; the complete transcript of the Act in
both German and English is available on line.
Yet another reason to vote Leave on June 23rd.
Yours faithfully,
UK I P Councillor Michael Baker,
NOTE FROM THE EDITOR...
In the interests of balance we have included one remain and
one leave letter.
In my opinion they both demonstrate the difficulty faced by
the voting public caused by the nature of the campaigns.
Although I cannot claim to have read all materials from the
two camps I can say with certainty that Boris has never said
that it is the right of every Englishman to have their stools
propelled unmolested into the North Sea. Further, to put
the leave letter to the test let it be known that I think the EU
COMMISSION are often incompetent because they do not
communicate and create consensus with the EUs Citizens
regarding the laws and regulations they proffer.
If I am arrested I hope all CRABTALES readers will rise up
to free me. Is that a knock at the door......................??

Dear Editor,
We were so pleased to read the article about the Cinnamon Trust
in the last issue of Crab Tales.
The Trust is such a lovely charity! We have recently lost our
beloved cat Thomas, a long term foster cat, who died suddenly
aged 21. He came to live with us when he was 17 years old when
Marjorie, his former owner, had to go in to a home. Marjorie had
previously registered herself and Thomas with the charity in the
knowledge that when she could no longer care for him, he would
be looked after.
My parents both had Dementia and I was their full time carer.
We had always had cats and we knew that a cat would help them
when they got upset. Thomas was wonderful, especially with
Mum who had Alzheimers Disease. Sadly both parents have
passed away, but Thomas helped my husband Les and I to get
over their deaths.
On a much happier note, we were able to keep in contact with
Marjorie and keep her updated with Thomas life and his trips
to the vets or if we went away for a few days, his visits to the
excellent Cattery in our village. Although Thomas is no longer
with us we keep in contact with Marjorie, this is a lovely thing
about Cinnamon, lasting human friendships are made through the
care of beloved pets.

Chest Pain by Dr Adam Maggio

Chest pain is often a very worrying symptom when we experience it. For most people
the most concerning cause is a heart attack. In the year of 2014/15 in the UK there were
about 400,000 admissions into hospitals related to heart disease according to the Office
of National Statistics. Given that chest pain is a major indication of heart disease it is a
certainly a symptom worth knowing about.
The first myth to dispel though is that heart disease is not the only cause of chest pain.
There are a variety of organs in the chest area of our bodies that can cause chest pain.
Below is a list of those organs and some of the diseases that can cause chest pain
associated with them:
Heart: Angina, myocardial infarction (heart attack), pericarditis etc.
Lungs: Chest infections, pulmonary embolism (blood clot on the lung), pleurisy etc.
Oesophagus (gullet): Oesophagitis, oesophageal spasm etc.
Ribs, muscles & nerves: Rib fractures, muscle strains from coughing, shingles.
Anxiety and panic attacks can cause chest pain.
Hopefully the list above will show that there is a large number of causes of chest pain
and the list is by far not complete. However when patients presents to us as GPs with
chest pain we use both the patients history and examination to come to a potential
diagnosis and start an appropriate treatment plan.
For patients it is important to consult a health professional when you have chest pain
however minor you might think it is because of the potential of it being a serious
problem. At Mundesley Medical Centre we have a triage system which helps the team
distinguish between very serious problems and ones that might not be an imminent
threat to the patients health so if you call the surgery make us aware early on if you
are having chest pain. However Mundesley Medical Centre is not open all the time and
you may experience chest pain out of hours. Even in those circumstances it is always
important to discuss any chest pain with a health professional and I would encourage the
use of the NHSs 111 service for this.
Sometimes though, the option to discuss your chest pain with a health professional
will not be appropriate. This is likely if someone is having a major heart attack. This
often presents with very heavy severe chest pain, associated sickness and vomiting
and shortness of breath. If you find yourself in those circumstances you need to call an
ambulance straight away via 999 to get appropriate help.
Like all our articles, reducing the chances of you having major causes of chest pain is
always achievable with a healthy lifestyle. This would include not smoking, having a
varied diet and drinking an appropriate amount of alcohol. As well as this, the two major
organs in the chest (heart and lungs) are always more healthy when we are more active
so make use of the ever improving weather and get as fit as you can.
Dr Adam Maggio MBChB, MRCGP
Mundesley Medical Centre

CLEAN THE BEACHES...CLEAN THE OCEANS

WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT.
Plastics in the Marine Environment

8
088 final.indd 8

Over 80% of the annual input comes from land-based sources. The main contributor is
larger plastic litter, including everyday items such as drinks bottles and other types of
plastic packaging. The remainder comes from plastics released at sea, the majority as a
result of fishing activities for example, due to lost and discarded fishing gear.
94% of the plastic that enters the ocean ends up on the sea floor. There is now on
average an estimated 70kg of plastic in each square kilometre of sea bed !!
Despite the high profile of projects intended to clean up plastics floating in mid-ocean,
relatively little actually ends up there. Barely 1% of marine plastics are found floating
at or near the ocean surface, with an average global concentration of less than 1kg/
km2. This concentration increases at certain mid-ocean locations, with the highest
concentration recorded in the North Pacific Gyre at 18kg/km2.
By contrast, the amount estimated to be on beaches globally is five times greater, and
importantly, the concentration is much higher, at 2,000kg/km2. While some may have
been dropped directly, and other plastics may have been washed up, what is clear is that
there is a flux of litter between beaches and the sea. By removing beach litter, we are
therefore cleaning the oceans.

You have Goat to be kidding me!

North Norfolk District Council brings Britains oldest breed of goat to Cromer cliff to control scrubland.
A new habitat management project by NNDC hopes to keep an area of Cromer cliff under control with the introduction of goats.
Eight Bagot billy goats will be released into a fenced off area in June where their grazing will keep unwanted plant species and
excessive growth to a minimum.
In the past the cliff area has become overgrown, leading to a problem with litter embedded and snagged in bushes. The Bagot goats
graze on rough materials rather than grass and will therefore keep plant growth over the area under control.
Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: This is an exciting project we hope the people of Cromer
will be able to enjoy two-fold for the habitat management the goats will offer and the enjoyment of having unusual animals in the
town.
Now residents and visitors will not only be able to enjoy the beautiful Cromer sunsets, but watch our Billy goats working hard to
keep the town beautiful.
The Bagot is believed to be Britains oldest breed of goat and unlike most other breeds - that favour mountains and uplands - it
developed in the English lowlands. Bagots are hardy and easy to tame.
NNDCs Cromer goats have been checked and monitored by a local vet and their welfare will continue to be appraised over their time
on Cromer cliff. They will be surrounded by double livestock fencing that will be six foot tall at the bottom of the slope. The fences
will be checked twice a day.
Cllr Fitch-Tillett added: We must ask people not to feed or touch the goats because they have a job of work to do and we need them
to not get distracted.
The habitat grazing project was developed with support from Suffolk Wildlife Trust and the goats arrived with the District Council
in April. Two came from the Dinosaur Park near Lenwade in Norfolk, and the other six from Levens Hall, Cumbria where they are
raised as a semi-feral parkland breed. They have spent the past weeks getting used to one another and settling into their new group.
The goats will be released into the fenced-off area in June and remain until October or November when they will be taken to other
NNDC land to graze over the winter. If the goats clear the land too rapidly they will be moved to other land for grazing.

NORTH WALSHAM FESTIVAL 2016

This years North Walsham Festival, organised by Arts North Norfolk, will run
18 to 26 June. Its the towns second Festival and this year will mark the towns
links with the 1381 Revolt and Battle of North Walsham.
Last years North Walsham Festival was a great success, engaging with 8,700 as
audience members, artists, performers and participants. Theres even more ways
for people to get involved this year, from free workshops to get ready for the
Festival Parade, the Battle Project (recreating the 1381 Battle using dance), North
Walsham Knits, the Festival Open Art Exhibition and lots of work with local
schools.
Joseph Ballard, Festival director said:
A town Festival should be shaped, delivered and animated by its community and
its only as strong as the people who support it. Were helping develop the sense
of community here in North Walsham even further with profiling the Festival,
making the town an exciting place with innovative events and attractions to make
everybody residents and visitors alike very proud.
This year sees some new Festival events, like the lunchtime recital series in St
Nicholas Parish Church. From harp, piano and flute theres a nice bit of variety
with the informal concerts and audiences are invited to come along, bring their
sandwiches and enjoy their lunchbreak!
A new play The Good, the Bad and the Revolting will be premiered, which is a
piece of free street theatre for all ages, which will start at the Market Cross and
then lead the audience around to different town centre locations. The play will
embrace some folk, elements of a Mummers Play, song and puppetry. There will
also be some contemporary references as we explore the cognate elements of the
people versus the state, which will be even more relevant being performed the
week of the EU Referendum.
The Mynx Soul Band will headline the Festival Tent in the evening of Saturday
25 June and the Norfolk and Norwich Medieval Association will be camped in the
park all weekend too with free demos and activities representing Medieval life.
Lighter fun is also on offer, with Sing-Along Mamma Mia at the Atrium Theatre
on the Friday night and the farcical comedy, Kindly Leave the Stage, presented by
Baroque Theatre Company on Saturday 18 June also at the Atrium Theatre.
Joseph continued:
Sometimes Im hesitant in promising something for all ages, but this years
Festival holds to it for shows to many different ways to taking part.
I hope the town will continue to support the Festival. Im very proud that we can
offer over 25 free events in just 8 days and its a great way for the town to come
together for the biggest event of the year!
The Festival HQ, at No. 1 Market Place has lots of brochures and posters at the
ready. The local community are welcome to come and pick some up and help
distribute them in workplaces, to neighbours, clubs and schools.
For more information about the Festival and for other events, check out www.
artsnorthnorfolk.org, call 01692 218060 or pop into No. 1 Market Place, North
Walsham (open Wednesday to Saturday).
The North Walsham Festival is supported by Arts Council England, as part of
Arts North Norfolks Inspiring Our Town project.

Ground-breaking coastal
partnership

Coastal Partnership East, a new innovative approach to managing

the coast between Holkham in North Norfolk and Landguard
Point in Felixstowe, will be formally launched on Friday 10th
June 2016.
The partnership, formed by bringing together the coastal
management resources and expertise from Gt. Yarmouth
Borough Council, North Norfolk District Council, Suffolk
Coastal District Council and Waveney District Council, will be
responsible for working along the 220km of coastline in Norfolk
and Suffolk.
Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Chair of the Partnership Board, said:
The formation of the partnership is an extremely important step
in how we manage the coast in Norfolk and Suffolk.
We will work together as equals and I am particularly looking
forward to seeing the joint expertise of the group benefit all of the
authorities involved.
Together we can take advantage of a larger resource of local
knowledgeand a higher degree of efficiency. The results will be
positive for all involved partly because the marine environment
takes no notice of district boundaries.
We will await with interest to see the impact of this new body in
regard to the many issues on our coastline.......Ed

Fundraising Cyclists on their

way to Cromer Pier!

Weve just been made aware of a wonderful story connecting

award winning Cromer Pier to it sister Pier in Bournemouth all
in the name of fund raising for the Meningitis Trust.
A group of 4 friends have departed Bournemouth Pier yesterday,
on their bicycles, and are now on the way to finish their journey
at Cromer Pier. They plan to arrive in Cromer early on Sunday
evening.
Duncan Truffrey, one of the riders, almost lost his son 15 years
ago to Meningitis, so the cause is very close to his heart. Luckily
his son is now a healthy 21 year old but sadly there are others
who havent been so lucky. His family has raised a staggering
50,000 over the past few years for Meningitis Now, so he is the
best person to interview if you want to know more information.
His number is 07831 516002.
We will look forward to welcoming the cyclists on Sunday
evening in Cromer!

North Norfolk District Council

wins Empty Homes Award

The prestigious Empty Homes Innovation Award has been given

to NNDCs Enforcement Board for their innovative approach to
bringing empty homes back into use.
The Award recognises the Boards close working across Council
departments to ensure projects are identified and plans actioned
without delay.
Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council Judy Oliver
said: We are incredibly proud to be given this award and I
would like to offer my congratulations to the Enforcement Board.
The success of this group is about the momentum to make
things happen. The Board is a significant strength of the Council,
speeding up both actions and outcomes in relation to the most
problematic empty or derelict sites.
NNDCs Enforcement Board has considered 127 cases since it
was set up in 2012, with positive action being taken on 121 cases.
David Gibbens Secretary of the Empty Homes Network said:
Congratulations on this well-deserved success which will be an
inspiration to other authorities up and down the country.
The Award was presented by the Empty Homes Network at their
annual conference in Birmingham in May.
