FROM THE EDITOR.

Triminghamites were very lucky we celebrated

our queens birthday with no rain see page.7.
Mundesley Soap Box Derby were also enjoying
the fabulous dry day see page 15.
Sunday was a bit wetter in places but that did
not stop the celebrations and fun, locally and in
London, photos of poncho wearing ice cream
eating celebrators epitomises all that is good and great in Gt
Britain.
We are spoil for choice at present to observe various sporting
activities from our couch, but remember we have many local
organisations ie Fitness League with Anna Marie details on page
9 offering a chance to get supple, lose a few pounds and have fun
Those of us lucky enough to have a dog get dragged out at least
twice a day for a walk ,in our beautiful countryside or beach,
remember now there is no need to hang the dogs deposits in the
local hedge, put in any public bin
Pet Stop of Cromer are having a pet portrait competition details
page 10, does not need to be a dog I have seen some very pretty
Guinean pigs and snakes
I hope we all enjoy sunny summer weather soon.
The Cromer Pier Show has now started and although it is
sometimes an active sea underneath the show its self is smooth
and really amazing do try to get tickets...

Dear Editor,
We of course never make mistakes and check and recheck the verasity of all our
articles... Liz King, Crabtales 088. Veracity is spelt with a c.
Anyhow, like Hugh Cornwell, I was strolling along minding my own business when a
chappie outside Cromers Lloyds Bank tapped me on the wishbone and asked me what
I thought of Brexit. Whats it used for? I replied. In his own way he outlined the
concept for me ( I suspected it may have been an oven-cleaner).
What is the point in asking people like me to decide on such matters? I couldnt tell you
which day the bin-men come. I did a calculation the other night and it appears I have
been ruled over by ten different Prime Ministers in and out of the EEC, and Ive been
poor under everyone of them. In my humble judgement as far as ordinary folk like us
are concerned none of this matters one way or the other and I would urge your readers
to go down the pub rather than the voting station on the the 23rd.
As everyone else has mouthed off, I just thought it only fair that the couldnt give a
Monkeys position was heard.
Yours sincerely
Philip Graham

To celebrate Dandelion Nurserys

prestigious award of the Saphere
Philosophy for Children Bronze Kite
Mark, Dandelion Education, in the village
of Marsham, hosted a Tree-for-Free-andPlant-a-Tree event. Families that attended
swapped gifts of tree, plants and hardening
skills, for a tasty afternoon tea treat, as
they helped develop an orchard area.
Dandelion is now holding an OPEN DAY
on Saturday 25th June from 2PM onwards.
Prospective families will meet and be
welcomed by the Dandelion team and, last
but never least, will be invited to chase
bubbles; and even join in with a spot of
tree climbing.

A NURSURY SCHOOL
THATS A LITTLE LESS
ORDINARY.

Hammers, saws and drills in the morning

and tree climbing in the afternoon. If your
childs nursery school doesnt offer this
then its not the Dandelion Nursery in
Marsham.
Dandelion is an outside nursery blending
forest school activities with philosophy.
Directors/Managers:
Emma Harwood and Hayley StaniforthRoom explain, As qualified teachers,
with over 20 years of teaching experience
in early years, we know that children
thrive in stimulating environments where
they are free to play, explore, imagine
and learn. We are passionate about our
ethos, believing that all children deserve
fun and meaningful learning experiences;
days that are filled with care, laughter and
discovery, where they are free to develop
their own interests, learning at a pace
that suits them. This is the experience
we wanted for our own children, so we
created Dandelion Education.
Dandelion also offers holiday clubs and
has been featured in The Guardian in 2014
as well as our local papers.

LETTERS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3.

Dear Editor,
My dear wife, whose name escapes me for the moment, was sitting on the pier
thoughtfully licking the nuts off a large Neopolitan ( her favourite ice-cream ), and
watching the workmen replacing rusty support struts when this tedious philosophical
puzzle occured to her: If, during its lifetime, the whole pier has been replaced bit-by-bit
as it has become corroded or damaged, is it the same pier?
Well it was no good asking me, I couldnt tell you how the can-opener works. So she
urged me to put it to your intelligent readership. Lets hope he can enlighten us.
Yours sincerely,
Philip Graham.
EDITOR : Happy to help Philip as I know philosophical puzzles can befuddle many
people. Luckily as Editor I can see through the fog to the oasis of reason. If you can
only see the pier as bits of metal and timber then no, it is not the original pier. However
if you see the pier as a platform for joy, thrills, culture and nut licking then rest easy as
our wonderful pier is very much the original and the best.

VICE ADMIRAL ON DECK !

Cromer RNLI staff were buoyed by a visit from the charitys top
brass on Tuesday 14th June 2016
The Coastal Review team from RNLI headquarters at Poole
visited the station at the end of the Pier as well as making a tour
of the Henry Blogg Museum. The team were met by Lifeboat
Operations Manager Richard Leeds and Chairman Tony Webster.
A review of all the RNLI lifeboat stations takes place every five
years and this week the team visited stations on the East coast of
England from Hunstanton to Yarmouth.
The purpose of the review is to see how stations are working in
each area, and to decide if any changes might be needed to ensure
that the RNLI continues to deliver lifesaving around the coast in
the most effective, safe and viable manner.
The team of volunteers and professionals was headed by Vice
Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence KCVO CB ADC(P), Chairman of
the RNLI Operations Committee together with representatives of
operations, engineering and asset management and community
life-saving.

From the Left George Rawlinson RNLI, Tony Webster

Chairman Cromer RNLI, Richard Leeds Operations Manager
Cromer RNLI and Rear Admiral Sir Timothy Lawrence
Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, outlined the purpose of the
review, and stated that the RNLI were in the process of putting
a more robust policy into practice, regarding the siting of, and
which, assets could be used to the best advantage to save lives
at sea, and possibly reduce the number of deaths caused by
drowning in the UK and Eire in the future.
The review for this team was taking place at all stations along
this coast visiting each station in turn, to get a first-hand idea
of how the existing stations were evolving to the needs of the
charity.
The event was extremely well attended with representatives
of the Cromer RNLI management committee, Ladies Guild
fundraisers and volunteer crew members as well as Lifeguard
Managers. The team were escorted around the station where they
viewed the all-weather lifeboat; their tour included a visit to the
RNLI shop and the Henry Blogg museum display. They spoke
with volunteer crew members and fundraisers and after lunch
continued their journey to Happisburgh.

CROMER END OF THE PIER SHOW :

Summer Show 2016

Cromer pier...a poem.

My sister has a caravan
East Runton by the sea
We went along to see her
And what a view has she.
She sees the sea and all the
sand
And further on, the pier
But when the sea mist rolls
along
The pier can disappear .
Cromer pier is going strong
With sea surge and the rest
Not many left in England
In Norfolk its the best.
So when you visit Cromer
Dont forget the pier
A Theatre on the end too
With shows from far and
near.

This year sees the return of the highly acclaimed and ONLY End of the Pier Show in
the world! The Cromer Pier Show returns for its 39th year and, according to critics its
the must see variety show of the summer
Heading up the show this year is comedian Phil Butler. He last appeared in our summer
shows back in 1998 & 99 so were excited to welcome him back. In the past Phil has
toured with a Cromer
favourite, Bradley Walsh, as
well as regularly performing
to the Armed Forces, giving
them a much needed moral
boost. He also hangs out
with fellow comedians
Micky Flanagan, Lee
Mack, Michael McIntyre
and Jimmy Carr, so we
know that his humour and
style will be first class
entertainment for you.
Joining Phil is Australias favourite comedy juggler, James BuSTAR. Hes appeared
on Australias Got Talent and has become a headline act at performances and festivals
across the globe. His unique show features stunts ranging from his death-defying axe
juggling routine to crowd favourites like his humorous bowling ball juggle. We dont
yet know what hes got planned for his debut appearance in Cromer but we know it will
blow your mind!
Our 2015 show received 5 star reviews again from The Stage and we have been
inundated with Trip Advisor reviews hailing it as a fantastic show for everyone. Come
and see the best traditional live variety show in Norfolk!
Audience figures have been increasing year on year so if you want your favourite seats
youll need to book early! Some of the 2015 prices have been held including the entry
level price of 10 and the top price premium seats remain the same at 23.50. Family
tickets are available again for the school holiday matinees.
Show duration approximately 2 hours 30 minutes
Ticket collection from the Box Office situated at the entrance to the Pier. Open from
10am staying open until 7.30pm on shownights.
Tickets only from 10.00.

Believed to be the first of its kind in East

Anglia, the Aylsham App available to
android and iPhone operating systems
will provide local residents and
visitors with an invaluable guide to the
town, its facilities, events, businesses
and other organisations. Developed
by local company Norfolk Geeks, the
Appis joined by a newly-designed
website, www.discoveraylsham.org with
interaction between the two allowing
individual companies and organisations
to update their own entries. The App,
when downloaded, is also designed to
be useable withoutwi-fi or mobile data, a
valuable feature in an area where a reliable
connection is not always available.
ABEF Chair, Monica Harding, comments:
The App is a very important development
for the town and as far as we know, the
first of its kind in East Anglia. With
financial support,on top of ABEFs own
funds, from Broadland District Council,
Aylsham High School and Aylsham Town
Council, Norfolk Geeks have been able to
develop a state-of-the-art facility which
will not only benefit local businesses and
add to the tourist attraction of our historic
town, but also provide a valuable source
of information for the local community.
The Aylsham App featureslocal
information including historic sites, walks,
transport information and events as well
as businesses, shops and organisations.
It provides a free and invaluable guide to
this historic town, for the community and
visitors alike.

If you would like to exhibit at the fair please email the Overstrand Together secretary at

TWITCHERS OUT IN FORCE FOR

GREAT KNOT.

There has been great excitement at RSPB TITCHWELL for the

very rare sight of a Great Knot on our shores. Only five have ever
been spotted in the UK with this being the second in Norfolk.
Keen wildlife photographers have been out in force to snap the
adult Great Knot roosting with the Red Knot in the Fresh Marsh.
Identified by the black and orange markings on the back, densely
marked black breast with black spotting on the sides. Slightly
larger than the red knots with a longer downcurved beak.

LETTERS CONTINUED
FROM PAGE 3.
Dear Editor
Regarding pollution in the North Sea and Protection From the European Union. The EU will never be able to solve the pollution
problems in the North Sea it might look clean however, there are now many unseen pollutants in the North Sea, for instance
Glyphosate which is found in weedkillers this chemical is used in many countries throughout the world and is usually sprayed on
GM Crops it is linked to causing cancer, Glyphosate has been found in over 75% of air and rain samples and has been detected
in North Sea Seawater, the European Union has at the moment put a ban on the growing of GM crops in the Eurozone and has
commented that it might be going to ban this Glyphosate this is probably due to the enormous pressure from public opinion
in Europe there has recently been a petition raised by the public to ban the stuff getting over 2 million signatures nevertheless
there always seems to be a halt to the EUs decision to ban this chemical when lobbied by the manufacturers of it. The EU
is also quite hypocritical in that it imports enormous amounts of soya beans that have likely been sprayed with Glysophate.
An equally pressing pollution problem is that many personal care product manufacturers use nano size plastic microbeads in
toothpastes, face scrubs, shower gels, shampoos, lip gloss, sunblocks and deodorants these extgremely small micro beads of plastic
are so tiny they are able to pass through current water treatment filters much of this contaminated water especially during heavy
rainfall enters the environment importantly they cannot be seen by the naked eye and are not biodegradable. Many companies
have voluntarily said that they will stop using them, but not all. It has been estimated that the oceans of the world contain many
millions of tons of this toxic material, fish consume it and humans in turn eat the fish,it is harmful to all manner of marine life.
Europe it is suggested uses around four thousand tons of these microbead particles a year, bans have been forcast but as usual
the action is painfully slow. In addition the North Sea contains nitrates, phospates, oil, acid rain, illegal animal slurry run off and
industrial waste goodness only knows whats in that and it is now well known that diesel fumes from ships is very prominent
in coastal areas, there are also far more toxic chemicals that are extremely harmful to human health which are in the seas you
mght be interested to do your own research on these. Therefore pollution is still a huge problem that needs to be dealt with by
goverments worldwide, its not just sewage that was problematic but a whole host of of probably much more dangerous toxic
waste and chemicals that urgently need to be dealt with. It is not just a North Sea problem but a worldwide problem. The EU
has the power to at least do something about these dangerous pollutants, but big busines who create these abnoxious products
seems to have even greater powers and constantly overide Goverment decisions by lobbying and bribes, many of the so-called
elite of this world will eventually destroy everything on this planet if we let them in their greedy pursuit of money and power.
Its high time for us all members of the public to have our say for once and Brexit by voting leave.
Thank You Charles Watts
A powerful and detailed letter but the result of the referendum will already be known when you read this.

event is designed to inspire and motivate
students to research their future career
goals. This years event will feature over
30+ Universities with students able to
talk to representatives about the different
courses on offer at each University, and
also find out how to apply.
In Norfolk we are lucky to have a wealth
of industry right on our door step and
KLM Engineering, British Sugar, BAE
Systems, Kettle Foods and OPITOY oil
and gas industry including many more
have agreed to attend the event. Norwich,
is the 4th largest contributor to medical
research in the country after London,
Manchester and Birmingham and with
Norwich Research Park and STEM NET
attending the event alongside a number
Science and Technology stands, it will
be a good event for those interested in
science.
In total student and pupils from local
schools will have over 50 employers to
visit, where they will be able to find out
about careers in all sorts of industries
from NHS to Construction, to Music and
Engineering, Law and Accountancy, Hair
dressing and Hospitality. Norfolk can be
proud to be a county of opportunity for
entrepreneurs from Colmans Mustard
to Kettle Foods. Students will have the
opportunity to find out more about setting
up their own business.

In addition to this the Army, RAF

and Navy will be attending to answer
questions about careers in the forces.
Apprenticeship Norfolk will also display
information on careers and give out advice
on apprenticeship opportunities in the
local area.
Kevin Grieve - the Principal at Paston
said:The North East Norfolk Futures Event
is now in its fourth year and it is set to
be even bigger and better this year. This
event will provide young people with a
great opportunity to meet representatives
from colleges, universities, apprenticeship
providers and employers.

Holt Festival 2016

Saturday 23
Sunday 31 July 2016,
Holt, North Norfolk
The Holt Festival has announced the full
line up for the 2016 event. Described
by by Norwich Theatre Royal Chief
Executive Peter Wilson as One of the
most important cultural events in Norfolk
the award winning Festival is a glorious
celebration of the arts and a jewel in the
North Norfolk Crown.

Now in its eighth year, the Festival

brings outstanding world class theatre,
music, comedy, literature, childrens
and visual art events to the picturesque
Georgian town for eight days, from 23 to
31 July. Featuring a wealth of talent, this
spectacular week of art and entertainment
is testament to Artistic Director, Charles
Pughs devotion to scouring the artistic
world for performers who are exciting,
interesting, sometimes challenging,
sometimes nostalgic, but always
entertaining.
Charles said This year our list of
famous artists grows even longer: Gyles
Brandreth, Colin Cloud, Julie Christie,
Joanna Trollope, Kate Adie, Jenny Eclair,
Mark Watson not to mention famous
name bands from the rocking 60s, 70s and
80s. But of course fame is not the only
kite mark of excellence. Diamonds shine
very brightly in our programme, with
some names to look out for in the future.
Believe me they will not disappoint.
Please explore and enjoy!
Holt Festival also makes a substantial
donation to the Holt Youth Project - one
of Englands most imaginative, award
winning youth schemes. Serving young
people across north Norfolk, it prides itself
on preventative programmes that allow
young people to reach their full potential.
This years donation will be used to fund
Community Music East to work with
young people to create a new show during
Festival week.

CROMER HONOURS THOSE WHO FELL AT THE SOMME

IN MAJOR NORFOLK EVENT

To mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, Cromer Town Council, Cromer Parish Church and the Royal British Legion are
calling on the people of Cromer to commemorate those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This will be the main event in Norfolk to
commemorate the Battle of the Somme.
As part of the nations Remembrance of the Battle of the Somme, the group which is part of the Cromer War-Memorial Restoration
Committeehas invited individuals and organisations to participate in an 18-hour vigil where they stand as an honour guard at the
Cromer War Memorial in hourly intervals ending at midnight on Friday 01-July.
At the time the vigil ends, a service of Remembrance will commence led by the Rev. James Porter, the Vicar of Cromer. The service
will conclude with a laying of wreaths which have been specially designed by the Royal British Legion to mark the 100th year since
the Battle of the Somme.
The event will take place at the Cromer War Memorial in the grounds of the Parish Church, High Street Cromer with the vigil
commencing at 6:00pm on Thursday 30-June-16 and continuing for 18 hours through the night ending at mid-day on Friday 01-July.
The Battle of the Somme took place from 1 July to 18 November 1916 and has come to symbolise the enormous losses and dreadful
conditions of the First World War. Every community across the UK was deeply affected by the loss of men who had gone to fight at
the Battle of the Somme, including Cromer where it is believed that 17 of its men died as a result of the conflict.
The event organiser Cromer Town Councillor, David Pritchard said: Following-on from the success of the service and concert to
mark the centenary of the commencement of World War One in August 2014, I was asked to organise a further event. There are
so many significant dates 100 years on but I felt that with the half-way mark of the conflict on 21-June, it seemed appropriate that
the Battle of Somme should be marked in some way. With similar event taking place at Westminster Abbey and other significant
memorials around the country, I thought we should mark this important occasion in a similar manner.
Through the four years that mark the centenary, fund raising has been taking place to repair and renovate the Cromer War Memorial
and recently achieving the half-way mark of 21,000, the War Memorial Fund Raising Committee is waiting to hear the outcome of
their application for funding from the War Memorial Trust.
