On 31st October, 1964 a man arrived to Woodend.

He stayed in the village for one night

and he left a day later. A few weeks later he went back and bought a house, later he put a
sign that said The Corner Shop. The mans name was Dave Slatin.
The villagers went to the village hall and talked about the new shop. At first some
people didnt like it, but later they all agree. The shop was going to sell village products
too. The corner shop had an assistant, her name was Anna.
The shop was a success it was cheap and good. Dave lived in a flat above the shop. At
the bottom of the stairs there was a room that had a sign, it said: SPECIAL ORDERS
ONLY, KEEP OUT and the door was locked.
A few months later, a woman went to the corner shop and asked for Dave. She was
Greta Gordon (a famous actress). Dave went downstairs and went in the special orders
room with Greta. When they came out she was upset and she didnt have her Diamond
rings. And she told Anna that her visit was a secret and gave her a Photo of her.
One day Anna was reading the newspaper and she saw a photo of Greta Gordon, she
was going to be the star of Beautiful Woman, a famous film, because the other actress
broke her arm.
Anna had a big problem, she was going to marry her boyfriend Peter, but she liked Dave
too. One day Dave asked Anna if she wanted to go to Lidney with him in his car, she
said yes and the next afternoon they went and they had a good time. They went to the
cinema and to a restaurant. When they went back to the shop, Dave kissed her, it was a
quick kiss but it was wonderful to her.
A few months later, a young man with a small case went in the shop and asked for
Dave. They went in the special orders room and Anna heard a noise from outside. When
they went out the room the man was very nervous and went fast in his car.
The next day some people went to Mr. Harts house to watch a football match. While
they were watching the match, Mike Bailey, a placer, scored two goals. When he hit the
ball again, the goalkeeper broke his neck and Mike scored another goal.
Later Mike had an interview to talk about the match. When Anna saw his face she
figured out he was the man in the shop the day before.
One day Anna and Dave were alone in the shop and he asked her if she wanted to go to
London with him for a weekend. She accepted only if he answered a question about th
special orders room. Anna asked why people came to see Dave. He said that he sold
help to people.
Anna enjoyed the weekend. But when they came back Peter was waiting for her to tell
her that he knew about the weekend in London. He was angry and Anna was very
unhappy.
A few days later Anna was alone at the shop. She was different, she was a sad and
lonely girl.
