I NEED YOU TO WRITE A BIT MORE ON:
THE ROLE OF THE QUOTATION MARK

Plagiarism is the act of using someone elses idea without crediting them. When the
writer plagiarizes they tend to either copy words from another source to make up the majority of
their work < even a little bit counts!] or change around words to make the sentence sound as if it
were their own idea but still keep the sentence structure the same.
In order to prevent plagiarism, the writer should plan the paper before writing it. When
planning, the writer must research and take effective notes, so they can summarize the main idea
of their source in their own words. <That IS paraphrasing which you introduce & discuss
below ???] Attributing, or citing is also a good way to avoid plagiarizing because the writer of
the source is given credit for their work. An example would be to start the sentence with
According to The Detroit Free Press or The Detroit Free Press stated.
NOTE: ^ this will NOT cure plagiarism if the exact words are used I that case, ONLY
quotation marks will

These are pretty close BUT there are not a lot of different ways to state this same
concept. So this is NOT an accusation. Im doing this exercise BEFORE we start class for my
own enlightenment and for students to see how I work as well : >
Another effective method to prevent plagiarism is to paraphrase. When paraphrasing the
writer summarizes and restates someone elses idea and make it into their own words, the
difference between plagiarizing and paraphrasing is that the writer is changing both the words
and the sentence structure of the original source without changing the content and also giving
that source credit by attributing or citing.
A paraphrase is a restatement in your own words of someone elses ideas. Changing a few words of the original
sentences does NOT make your writing a legitimate paraphrase. You must change both the words and the
sentence structure of the original, without changing the content. Also, you should keep in mind that
paraphrased passages still require citation because the ideas came from another source, even though you are
putting them in your own words.

Changing the words of an original source is not sufficient to prevent ... The writer properly cites all sources, paraphrasing and using quotations .... Plagiarism can also be
considered a felony under certain state and federal laws. ..... You must change both the words and the sentence structure of the original, without changing ...

The purpose of paraphrasing is to highlight important facts that could support the writers
argument. It helps the writer emphasize relevant points from the source; furthermore, using
credible sources to support the argument can strengthen and make the argument valid.
Paraphrasing can prevent the writer from using too many quotes in their paper.

When quoting, the writer must analyze the quote afterward, [not in journalistic writing]

but when paraphrasing the writer summarizes the source which is quicker and easier than
quoting. [NOT the case in journalism we WANT quotes]
Overall, paraphrasing allows the writer to have a better understanding of the original
source instead of copying the idea. [NOT the case in journalism we WANT quotes]
