1 Description
The Focus MPT4-2T Composite Tuner system is designed to produce user controllable impedance
synthesis at four distinct frequencies. This system includes the following items:
1. One MPT tuner (high frequency)
2. One standard CCMT tuner (low frequency)
3. One Low Pass Filter (pass characteristic to coincide with the CCMT)
4. Software control using Load Pull Explorer (with at least LP-Basic and LP-4H options)
The MPT, low pass filter, and CCMT are physically connected together and calibrated as a single tuner as
outlined in this document. Specialized software algorithms are then used to compute the appropriate
tuner positions to synthesize user defined impedances in a similar manner to any other MPT type tuner
(Refer to the Load Pull Explorer Operational Manual and MPT Reference Manual for more
information).

2 Procedure
The following is a step by step guide to configuring, physically connecting and calibrating the MPT4-2T.
MPT4

2.1 Physical Setup

Connect the MPT, filter and CCMT as shown in the following diagram
diagram. (Note:
e: the following is for a load
loa
tuner configuration)

Figure 1

2.2 Software Setup

Define the tuner as a MPT4-2T
2T as per the following diagram. Probes 1-3
3 should use the xMax/yMax of
the MPT, while probe 4 should use the xMax/yMax of the CCMT. Additionally, TCPIP_DUAL tuner
controller must be selected and the TCPIP address of the MPT entered1

Figure 2

Note: that the CCMT must be configured to have a sequential IP address relative to the MPT. Eg: MPT address:
10.0.0.1 --> CCMT address: 10.0.0.2. For more information on TCPIP configuration please refer to the Load Pull
Explorer Operational Manual

2.3 Tuner Calibration

2.3.1 Physical connection
Connect the tuner to the VNA as depicted below:

Figure 3

2.3.2 Software Calibration Settings

From the Tuner Calibration dialog, select Define Frequency Lists and use the ARBITRARY LIST option to
configure the frequencies to be calibrated similarly to the following2:

Figure 4

Note: The ARBITRARY LIST tuner calibration option require a VNA driver that supports arbitrary frequency list
sweeping.

When done, the Tuner Calibration dialog should appear similar to the diagram below. When
configuration is completed, press Start Calibration.
