WHAT ARE SEWAGE LIFTING

PUMPS?
A Sewage Lifting Pump Is Located At The

Bottom Of The Basin. It Is A Device Used To

Pump Fluids From One Place To Another

USES OF PUMPS
To Throw Sewage From A Low Lying Pocket of A City Into Its

Sewer Pipes Flowing Under Gravity.

In Flat Areas Sewage Is Lifted At Suitable Intervals.
For Disposal Of Sewage Of The Basement Of Large
Commercial Buildings.
When Outfall Sewer Is Lower Than Level Of Treatment Plant
Sewage Has Will Have To Be Pumped Up.
Sewage Is Pumped Into Sewers Laid Across The Slope of The
Ridge At Reasonable Depths

TYPES OF PUMPS
CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS:Centrifugal Pumps Are Most Widely Used For Lifting Sewage,
As They Can Be Easily Installed And Transport Suspended
Matter Present In Sewage Without Getting Clogged So
Often.

TYPES OF CENTRIFUGAL PUMP : NON-CLOG PUMPS- The Horizontal Axis Flow Type Of

Centrifugal Pumps Provided With Either Open Or Closed

Three vane Type Impeller, In Which Clearance Between
Vanes Is kept Large Enough So As To Allow Any Solid Matter
Entering the Pump To Pass Out With The Liquid Sewage.
Preventing Clogging Of Pump.
DISINTEGRATING PUMPS The Solid Matter Present In

Sewage Are Broken Up (Disintegrated) As they Pass Through

The Pumps Impeller. They Are Used When Sewage Is to Be
Directly Disposed Of Into The Sea Through The Outfall
sewer.

Other Types Of Centrifugal Pumps, Such As, Volute, Turbine

Type, etc. Maybe Also Sometimes Be Used depending Upon

The Circumstances.

RECIPROCATING PUMPS :Reciprocating Pumps Are Generally Not Used These days,
Because Of Their High Initial Costs, Difficulty In Maintenance,
And Greater Wear And tear Of Their Valves. However, They
May Sometimes Be Used For Pumping Difficult Sludge And
Where Large Quantity Is Required To Be Pumped Against Low
Heads.
They Should However, Be Amply Protected By screens Of 2 cm
Spacing.

TYPES OF RECEPROCATING PUMPS :o RAM TYPE- In The Ram Type, A Piston Or A Plunger Moves

Inside A Closed Cylinder. On The Intake Stroke, The Liquid

Enters The Cylinder Through The Intake Suction Valve. The
Delivery Valve Remaining Close During Intake Stroke. On the
Discharge Stroke, The Suction valve Closes, And The Liquid
Is Forced Into The Delivery Pipe Through The Delivery Valve,
Which Opens during The Discharge Stroke.

A Diaphragm Pump Is An Example Of Ram Type Reciprocating

Pump :-

PROPELLER TYPE- In The Propeller Type Pump, A Multiple

Blade Screw Rotor Or A Propeller Moves Vertically Inside A

Pump Casing , Causing The Sewage To Lift Up. The Action Is
Somewhat Similar To That Of A Ships Propeller, As It Draws
Water Through The Inlet Guide Vanes, And Discharges
Through The Outlet Guide Vanes.
The Axial Flow Screw Pump Is An Example Of This Type.

PNEUMATIC EJECTORS:1. Pneumatic Ejectors Sometimes Called Air Ejectors Or Air

Pressure Pumps Are Complete Loft Units In Themselves ,

And Are Used For Pumping Smaller Quantities Of Waste
Water, Such As For Raising Waste Waters From the
Basement Of The Buildings And Thus Discharge It Into
Street Sewers. Such A complete Unit Can Be Purchased
Ready-made, Fabricated For Direct Installations.
2. A Pneumatic Ejector, In general, Consist Of An Air-Tight
Tank Into Which The Waste Water Flows By Gravity, And
Out Of Which, the Waste Water Is Forced Automatically
Whenever Sufficient Waste Water Has Accumulated To
Raise Float, And thus opening the Compressed Air Inlet
Valve.

A Typical Example Of Air Ejector Is Shones Ejector :-

Installed For Lifting Sewage Is called A Sewage Pumping

Station.
These Pumping Stations Should Be Preferably Be Located Near
a Natural Disposal Unit, Such As, A Stream, A Lake Or A River.
Its Components Are :Grit Channel
Coarse And Fine Screen
Well, Called Sump Well
Dry Well Or Pump Room
Motor Room
Rising Mains
Emergency Exit Pipe, Etc.
