DOUGLAS PARK COMMUNITY SCHOOL

**WE ARE A NUT AWARE SCHOOL**

***WE ARE A DOG FREE ZONE NO DOGS ON THE PREMISES AT ALL TIMES***

It seems like we have skipped from winter right into summer this year! Many classes have been outside
investigating the seasonal changes. It is so exciting to notice the signs for spring first hand and then write
and create art pertaining to it. Learning is so powerful when it captivates all of our senses.
With the warm, dry weather most classes are taking their learning outside. Please make sure that your child
is dressed for the weather as well as wearing sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and proper footwear.
We have had many new families join the Douglas Park family in recent months. We appreciate how students
have been welcoming and helping the new students to settle into their classroom. It is wonderful to see these
children settle in quickly.
At the beginning of May, the District will be creating a Reception Centre at Douglas Park for Syrian refugees.
We still have many details to sort out but I am confident these children will benefit from the experiences and
willingness of the community to help them succeed.
Please continue to use your childs agenda, email or phone to communicate with the staff. Ongoing
communication allows us to deal with issues while they are still small and allows us to move forward to
ensure each childs success.
The mural should be mounted outside soon according to the Maintenance department. We look forward to
displaying The Seven Sacred Teachings: love, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility and truth. These
are teachings that we all try to exhibit each day. While we sometimes fall short, we continue to try to do
better each and every day.
We are currently preparing for our primary and intermediate spring intersession program held at the school
from May 16-20. Teachers are nominating students to participate in this program and if there are any seats
remaining we will ask other interested students to apply to participate.

Social Media, Connected Children, Parenting the Mobile Device Child:
An interactive and visual presentation helps parents understand where the social media and tech concerns
are in our connected community. This is a must-see presentation for parents who would like to proactively
examine the challenges of social media, reveal the realities behind the concerns around social media, and
prompt dialogue that fits your home values. This presentation will provide parents with the tools needed to
better equip themselves for parenting in the social media generation, extend the dialogue to reflect
technology influences in your home, and address the current trends in social media use within British
Columbia. Learn more by visiting www.mediatedrealtiy.com
