Engage:
Show the following video to student:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtlcS77LaB0
Engage in a turn and talk, then a whole group conversation regarding tiny
microbes around us.
Show students the Glo-Germ kit and ask them: What is the purpose of this liquid? How it
is used? Who would use it in the real world?
Explore:
Group the students into 4 groups.
Randomly hand out index cards labeled with directions to each group. Have
the students follow the directions on the card.
Cards:
Do Nothing
Wash hands with water only
Wash hands with water and soap Use hand sanitizer (This may take
time to allow students to go to the bathroom to wash hands)
After following the directions on the index card, have students rub some
Glo-Lotion all over their hands. Remind them not to touch anything while
Explain:
Have one group at a time tell what they did. Use the UV light to shine over
the students hands. Be sure to point out where the most germs where on
the hands. (The students will be amazed at what they see!)
Once all groups have had a turn, discuss which method was best to
prevent the spread of germs.
On the board draw two large hands and color where germs where found
the most (under the nails, in between the fingers, and on the front and
back of the wrists are usually the worst).
Revisit the questions that were used in the engagement and discuss.
Evaluate:
Conduct a think-pair-share cooperative learning model on what they
discovered after washing their hands and what conclusions they have
made regarding microbes. How can microorganisms can be controlled and
not passed on from person to person in the classroom, at home, at
restaurants, etc. Are they harmful? Are they helpful? Can you choose?
(Pair students up with a different card) Participate in drawing conclusions
about hand washing by first thinking independently, then pairing up with a
partner to discuss, and finally contributing to a group discussion.
Extend:
Play the following Justice League clip for students. Ask them to draw a
comic explaining why proper handwashing is beneficial to reducing illness,
and other concepts discerned from student conversation. Alternatively
have them write and perform a PSC about handwashing.
