In the first case In the best interest of the child The case work Linda had to deal with a current
issue in today society. The issue of religious practices and beliefs and the rights of a state to
protect its citizens. Linda the social worker was faced with this dilemma. In my opinion she had
a good plan of goals; first, she had the parents take some sort of classes about dysfunctional and
normal child rearing. Secondly, she involved another social worker therapist that specialize in
family practice. She also asked a judge to give the teenager daughter more time at the foster
home. However, the father hired a lawyer to prove his case. Which, is that he should be allowed
to rear his child as he sees fit according to his religious practices. The client who is the daughter
tried to compromise with her father. The father did make improvements. However, with more
time for the daughter at the foster home. The father may have made more progress towards the
goal of not being abusive to his daughter or being too strict on her. I think the state does have the
right to regulate religious practices. The state has a responsibility to the people and citizens of
their jurisdiction. Religious practices can be harmful if not regulated by the state. Some religions
do not believe in taking medication and a plethora of other things that could put a person in
harms way.
In Sallys Saga her story indicates how social workers face ethical dilemmas and confrontational
skills. In the case of Joe the client along with his wife. Joe was a client that the social worker had
to understand his cultural differences as well as his cultural norms. The social worker did
accomplish the task of learning about her client. She did listen to him. She did put any bias
feeling away if she had any. In doing this the social worker found the strengths that her client
had. She found out that he was dedicated to his family. But, that he started his own family at a

young age. She found out that he was a decent student in school. However, once he opened up to
the social worker he disclosed that he was using marijuana. This was a violation of his probation.
This is where the ethical dilemma came in at. But, the social worker used her critical thinking
skills and confronted the client. The confrontation led to the social worker being able to offer her
client an alternative. The revocation of probation or a residential treatment program. This gave
the client Joe a chance to participate in the process with using self-determination.
