BTEC 210 ~ Structural Theory
Truss Design
GIVEN: The steel truss profile shown below for a commercial office building. The
loading on the roof consists of a DL = 78 PSF and a LL = 40 PSF. In addition, the steel
members have the following allowable stresses
+ Allowable tensile stress = 21.6 KSI
‘+ Allowable compressive stress = 10 KSI
1. Determine the force in ALL of the members of the truss. Prepare a scale
“summary sketch” clearly indicating the forces (in units of kips) and whether
they are in Tension or Compression
2. Design the lightest weight members for all truss members using the allowable
stresses as indicated above. Prepare a scale "summary sketch” clearly
indicating the sizes used. Use the following
+ All top chord members shall be the same size equal-leg back-to-back
double angles.
+ All bottom chord members shall be the same size equal-leg back-to-back
double angles.
+ Alldiagonal interior members shall be the same size equal-leg single
angles
+ All vertical interior members shall be the same size equal leg single
angles.
