AECT 460 Steel Design

Fall 2010
Homework # 2 To be done INDIVIDUALLY!!

Problem 1
GIVEN: The steel sculpture located in front of Smith Hall.
REQUIRED: Field-measure each of the 10 members shown, and draw to 1 = 1-0 scale
(using AutoCAD) a fully-dimensioned NEAT cross-sectional sketch and indicate the
designation of each member. Show ALL dimensions on the sketches.

Problem 2
GIVEN: The ROOF FRAMING PLAN below is for a commercial office building located in
coastal Alaska. The following SERVICE loads are to be used:

Roof live load Lr = 20 PSF

Roof Dead Load D = 34 PSF
Flat roof Snow Load S = 65 PSF

REQUIRED:
1) Determine the maximum ASD moment on the W21x44 beam using the appropriate
ASD Load Combinations as dictated in AISC p. 2-9.
2) Determine the maximum LRFD moment on W21x44 beam using the appropriate
LRFD Load Factors as dictated in AISC p. 2-8.
3) Using the worst-case ASD loading from part 1, determine the maximum ASD moment
on the W30x99 Girder. Draw & label a shear/moment diagram.

Problem 3 (ASD)
GIVEN: The steel truss as shown below. All loads indicated are ASD loads. Assume the
following:

All steel members = A572 Grade 50 (See AISC p. 2-39)

Bolts = 7/8 diameter
7
Member A = Double-angles L5x5x
16
Assume connection length = 3

REQUIRED:
1) Determine the tensile force in Member A using the loads as shown.
L
2) Determine if Member A is acceptable based upon
300 .
rmin
3) Determine if Member A is acceptable based on yielding on gross area.
4) Determine if Member A is acceptable based on fracture on net area.
