NARRATIVE LETTER

We have just completed reading the memoir, Red Scarf Girl by Ji-li Jiang. Her story is a powerful
message about courage and determination during Chinas Cultural Revolution. We have discussed each
chapter in detail and tried to expand our own understanding by seeing different peoples perspectives,
most especially Ji-li Jiangs feelings and point of view during that difficult time her life.
We have the honor and privilege of having Ms. Jiang visit Willows Prep as a guest author on Tuesday,
December 8th. The entire 6th grade class will be writing a personal narrative letter to Ms. Jiang as a
reflection of reading her memoir. We will bind the letters together in a book and present them to her on
the day of her visit.
Your letter to Ms. Jiang will be a personal narrative written from your own point of view about a personal
experience. This is your opportunity to tell her what you thought about her memoir as well as share with
her about an experience in your life that took courage or determination. Your personal experience does
not need to be as extreme as what Ms. Jiang went through. I guarantee she will appreciate hearing about
how your own personal experience impacted you.
