Need for organizing majority of students / teachers/ Organizat’ns (who rep) “To fight
back”
Ppl opposed to cut but no alternative: but there is!
“Crisis of Priorities” – Billions on wars (Iraq + afghan.)
Build democratic mvmt. Open to everyone vs. budget cuts
Not enough for protests only

Desirae Almadra – Left CSM at 19 b/c pregnant, got law degree in 14 years, Thought
CSM was “step up”
Left abusive household at 16 Didn’t do so well in high school, professor helped her
realize potential, Graduated from Cal, community college professor here to teach +
smaller classes = better, after birth reenrolled at SF city college, “never take no for
an answer” B/c appealed to get into cal(grad in 3 sem.), graduated from law school,
finished school. She made an impression on other people’s lives b/c she influenced
them to get an education.
Tuition only pays 7% of cost to run school
Property tax usually funds school; but since prop. Tax has gone down b/c prop.
values falling.
What school doesn’t get from prop. tax State provides
Governor proposed 2% increase in community college funds
Cheaper for state to pay for students in CC’s than to pay for them in CSU’s
Miller: Prop 13 (passed 70s) Prop taxes cut by 57%
We need 2/3 vote to cut spending or raise taxes = need for cooperation btwn
parties
State ran out of money because “couldn’t decide what to do” = handed out IOU’S
Spending by state cut by 18%
Over 3 year period state is going to spent 40%? less
Who do we lay off? To solve deficit?
CSM budget cut 10% this year + people laid off
Expect cut 10% next year
Modify prop 13 so its easier to raise taxes of prop.
