Google Earth Activity

1. Double-click the Google Earth icon on your desktop.

2. Find each location and perform the measurements necessary to calculate what is asked for by
using the ruler.

3. Write down your results.

4. If you finish early, find a location or object not listed and determine its area and perimeter.

Finding a location
Enter the name of the place or object into the search field in the upper left corner and press enter
or click the “Begin search” button.
Mouse over the right side of the screen to use the zooms and change the camera angle.
You can also click and drag the map to change location and double-click to zoom in.

Using the ruler


Click on the “Show Ruler” button on the toolbar.
Select the units to use: meters, feet, miles, etc.
Click a location to set one endpoint of your line.
Move the cursor and click again to set the other endpoint.
Close the ruler window to find the next location.

Finding a location on the moon, Mars or in space.


Pull down the menu found on the button with a picture of Saturn.
Select Earth, Sky, Mars or Moon.
