Behind the Scenes at Cosmopolitan

In Praise of Bad Girls

After I was named editor-in-chief of Cosmo, 1 stopped by the office oflegend and former Cosmo editor Helen Gurley Brown and spotted a wonderful pillow on her loveseat, It said: Good girls go to heaven ... bu: bad girls go eoerqwhere. Cosmo has a long tradition of loving bad girls. But by had, we don't mean cheating on your man or your taxes. Vie mean having a ballsyconfideuce that allows you to take life by the tail and go, well, everywhere-ill Kate Moss is a both your professional great bad girl.

and personal life. Turn to page 176 for our celebration of bad-girlism, including a gUide to bringing out your own brand of bad ass.

REAUSTIC ROMANTIC

When she was 19 years old, Kim eloped wi th her boyfriend, music producer Damon Thomas, who is 10 years older than she is, She didn't tell her family, but when her sister Kourtney stumbled across the marriage license, their dad-the late Robert Kardashian, a businessman and lawyer who helped defend O.J. Simpson- was furious.

"When it comes to love, Kim has always been a hopeless romantic who wants to be like a faay-tale princess," Kourtney tells us, "yet she's also extremely responsible."

Kim's dad soon forgave her, and she went to work at his music- marketing film before becoming a celebrity fashion stylist. But her marriage crumbled after four years, teaching Kim a crucial lesson about love: "Marriage isn't about

making an impulsive choice. It requires a partnership."

Kim believed she had found that with NFL star Reggie Bush, whom she dated for two-and-a-half years before they broke up this past summer. Kim confessed that before the breakup, she was cutting out weddingdress photos from bridal magazines. She thought it "vas only a matter of time before he proposed.

What went wrong? According to Kim, the strain of a long-distance relationship=-she's based in L.A., while he plays football in New Orleanstook its toll. "It's hard when he's playing during the season and I'm fi.lming my show," she tells us dllling a phone conversation one day. "It's not going to be much of a show if I'm in New Orleans, separated from my family."

It may sound like Kim's ambition took precedence over her relationship. But we wonder ifit's an example of Kim learning from her mistakes by not settling for a less-than-ideal relationship.

Thing is, we have astmng hunch that Kim and Reggie are trying to make it ideal; the pais has been spotted out together post breakup suspiciously often. So we ask what the deal is, 'You never know what will happen i.n the future," she says softly, and we can't help but hope that the ew Orleans Saints hurry up and become the Los Angeles Saints.

After all, Kim isn't leaving L.A. anytime soon=-shes shopping fur a house-and she's clearly eager to expand the Kardashian clan. "I've learned what I'd need to do to balance a career and family," she says. "A lot of work goes into relationships. Right now, I'm fi.gmi.ng it out" •

Nothing makes men tear up like Kim deciding to sit down.

51HINGS YOUDIDNPf KNOW ABOUT KIM ••• UNTIL NOW

also a great way for me to connect with people in places like Oklahoma, where 1 never would go otherwise. Those girls going to the clubs will be buy-

ing my perfume."

We don't doubt it. In just a

few years,. Kim has morphed :iAL from an anonymous girl posing next to ex-BFF Paris Hilton to 2008's most-Coogled celeb, so there's no denying Kim's appeal. Sure, men think she's hot. But women think of her as a refreshingly real alterna-

tive to skeletal fame-bets. "I don't want to

gain or lose weight," she explains while digging into dessert-e-crepes with strawberries, bananas, and whipped cream. "I work out to be more toned."

A~ we chat with Kim over the course of several weeks in person, on the phone, and over e-mail, we realize that abig pad of her charm is her ability to be open without oversharing. You may be thinking that the sex tape she made with H&B Singer Hay J, which some people believe Kim helped leak in 2007, counts as oversharing. But we don'tthink Kim ever wanted it made public. "I was devastated," she tells us, "hut when something negative happens, 1 pick myself up and move on ... and 1 don't make the same mistake twice."

SecondTime Around?

When news broke in April that Drew Barrymore and Justin Long were lovey-dovey again after their public: breakup nine months before, the phrase "Yeah, that'll last" carne to mind.

If a relationship ends, it's obvious there were problems, and it's hard to lll1af,rine things going any more smoothly the second time. That seems especially true if the split was awful. Shouldn't both people just learn £:01Tl the experience and move on?

Not necessarily, say eAl)elt~. Yes, there may have been issues, but a serious time-out can make a couple stronger in the long mn ... ifthose issues are addressed and resolved.

That said, there are certain "rules of the repeat" that can help improve your odds of success in round 1\'10.

GO SLOW. It's hard to slam on the brakes when you're making

up for lost time, not to mention enjoying being so familiar with each other. But admit it or not, you've both changed and need to take time to get reacquainted.

"Try to look at it as a brand-new relationship," says relationship therapist Bethany Marshall, PhD, author of Deal Breakers. \Vhil.e you might be dying to fast -forward to (:my Saturday momings in bed, it's important to stop and think about why you want to be together ... just like you would while getting dose with any guy.

Be honest with yourself: If the idea of going to another party alone makes you cringe, you're more likely craving

a quick fix for loneliness, not your ex, says Michael Broder, PhD, author ofGan YOfW Relationship Be Saved? And sooner or later, you'll be saying ''"We need to talk" allover again. But if you can picture backpacking across Europe with him next summer-and he can

too----your heart is probably in the right place.

TOUCH ON ntE PAST. You split for a reason ... even ifit's hazy now. But you and your ex-ex need to face what went wrong the first time if you're going to move forward, says couples therapist Robert B uchicchio, author of Taking Space, and then Jet it go, once and for aU.

Try hashing out the bigger points of what you want to do differently thi.s time in a way that isn't threatening, like "It would make me happy if. .. " and have him do the same. Then really act on it: Ifhe couldn't stand your liberal definition of mTiving "on time," make a point to be early. And if your hot button was not getting a text when he was out late, call him out ifhe trips up again. Just pick your battles when it comes to past issues or you'll be back where you started, AND ntEN MOVE ON. The upside of.having split once is it probably made you stronger. "Every time we break up with someone, we learn how to have our own lives," Marshall says. So whether you went skydiving or dated someone else, you gained a new perspective that only makes you better this time .. .for both of you.

As for what (or whom) you did during your split, its best not to go into excruciating details, Broder advises. Instead, focus on the great time you're having together now .... not then. •

Bathroom Booty

"I was dating this guy when his family invited me to a party at their house. I went over and tried to be on my best behavior, but my boyfriend and I were so homy, we snuck into the bathroom and started getting it on right there on the counter. It was incredibly hot-until both of his parents walked in without knocking! Appar~ ently, they had noticed we'd gone missing and looked for us everywhere before busting in on our quickie. They were pissed, to say the least." ~Vdy, 23

Help (Not) Wanted

"I was hooking up with this one guy, but he was really starting to get on my nerves because that was clearly all he was interested in-we hardly talked otherwise, and he'd never be up for dates.

"One day, I was at work when, to my shock, he came in to interview for an open position. I started freak.ing out about how awkward ~ would be if he were my coworker. After he left,1 asked the manager what he thought He seemed to like him ... untill told him that I went to school with tile guy and knew for a fact that he did tons of drugs and might even be dealing them. Maybe if he hadn't been such a jerk to me, he would have gotten the jobr" -Amelia, 19

TA = Totally Awkward

"My sophomore year of college, I went to a frat party a few days before classes started, andl met this hot guy who was older than I am. One thing led to another, and I ended up staying at his place that night. Despite the steamy hookup, the morning after was pretty awkward. I made the least amount of small talk possible and then quickly walked back to my place, so glad that I wouldn't ever have to see him again.

"The following week, I was running late to the first day of my accounting recitation because I couldn't find the building. When I rushed into the roomafter everyone el5e-1 came face to face with the TA, who just happened to be my wild hookup from a few nights earlier! Everyone watched as our new TA, who was in the middle of talking, completely stopped and struggled to find his words, Unfortunately, I had to spend the entire semester reliving the awkward encounter-every single Monday,

Wednesday, and Friday, no less!"

Bare Witness

"Last year, I lived in a room in my dormitory that is right next to the boys' bathroom. Really late one night, I decided to take a shower and was feeling a little lazy. I figured there wouldn't be anyone showering in the boys' bathroom at such an odd time, so I hopped in, After just a couple of minutes, the curtain suddenly opened to reveal one of the cutest guys who lived on the hall. I had been ogling him for several weeks! We both stood there completely shocked-and me completely nude-before he mumbled a quick sorry and ran out of the bathroom. So much for any chance I might have had with him before that. For the rest of the year, he avoided eye contact every time we passed each other in the hallway!" -Sheila, 21

Slick Move

"After I visited my boyfriend in Chicago for a week, my mom came to pick me up. On our drive home, we stopped at a hotel to rest. The next morning, as we were getting ready, my mom asked if she could use my brush. I said sure and told her to get it out of a pocket of my backpack-totally forgetting about my stash of lube clearly visible in there,

at "A few hours later, when we were on . the road again, my mom looked over at me and said we needed to talk. She said she had found the half~mpty bottle in my bag and taken it from me. She thinks I'm still a virgin, so I lied and told her that I used it for masturbating. I was so nervous about what her response would be, but she laughed, handed it back to me, and said she was relieved that nothing had happened during the week with my boyfriend." -Kara,23

What a Steal!

"Shortly after my guy and I moved in together, we received an envelope in the mail that was addressed to the previous tenants. It read, 'Your gift card is inside,' so we wanted to make sure it got to its rightful owners. We put it back in the mailbox with a note attached to it, but after about a week, it was still there. We assumed there wasn't a forwarding address and decided to open the envelope to see what was inside . To our surprise, it was a S 150 voucher to an ultraswanky restaurant we'd been wanting to try.

"We went back and forth about what we should do but eventually decided that someone should put it to good use and treated ourselves. Shortly afterward, we got a knock on our door. It was the prev~ ous tenant, and she was wondering if we'd seen a gift card in tile mail for her. I had no choice but to lie to her face and tell her :1 hadn'Lbutthat I'd keep an eye out for it."

Feasting Their Eyes

"Every year for Thanksgiving, my family goes out to eat at a really nice restaurant instead of making dinner at home. This past Thanksgiving, I put on my best skirt and top and thought I was looking supercute. When we got to the restaurant, we noticed through its front window that a ton of people were inside, and I was so glad I had decided to dress up. Just then, a gust of wind blew by and lifted up my skirt. Of course,it happened while I was still standing right in front of the window, so everyone inside got a clear view of my panties! I must have looked at the floor the whole meal to avoid the stares I got for ruining everyone's family dinner."

Silence Is Golden

"The night before my friend's wedding, she and all the bridesmaids spent the night at my place. The ceremony was beautiful, and so was my friend-except

for one thing. At the reception, I noticed that there were some yellow spots on her dress. I realized that my dog must have relieved himself on her gown the night before! I was too embarrassed to tell her that my pup peed on her dress, so I kept my mouth shut Till this day, I still haven't

said a peep about it."

A Bad Rap

"After a few weeks at a new job, I decided to connect my iPod to my computer's speakers and listen to some music during the workday. The office was pretty corporateconservative, but most of the songs in my iTunes library are James Taylor-ish, so I figured it would be okay. I'd always just put it on shuffle and keep the volume low, and no one seemed to mind. Then one day, all of a sudden, a really graphic rap song started blasting out of my speakers with tile loudest bass ever and lyrics about

spanking some girl. I had forgotten that was on there ... and that it was a gazillion times louder than the rest of my songs! All my coworkers glared at me, and before I could get to the volume button to turn it down, my boss came over to ask me a question. I tried talking over the song to mask the graphic lyrics, but it didn't work. I got lectured on being appropriate at work and spent the rest of the day apologizing for the surprise rap concert. Head Over Heels

"I had a superhet date tile other night, and he was such a gentleman .. After an absolutely amazing night, he put the perfect classy touch on the evening by hailing a

fa cab for me to ride home in. I was really impressed! As I was _ getting in, I dedded to pull him toward me to give him a goodnight kiss. Somehow, though, I lost my footing while I

was doing that and ended up falling into a huge puddle of water on the street. The cab driver actually started cracking up, which made things even worse. Thankfully, the guy was really sweet and still gave me a quick kiss, but I still cringe when I think about my not-so-smooth move."

Look Who's Stalking

"I was bored at work one day, so I decided to Google my office crush. My search was getting really intense as I discovered more and more pictures of him. I found one that was gorgeous, so I maximized it for my coworker to see. Just then, I saw my crush walking toward me. I casually attempted to close the window, but my com outer froze! He walked by and saw the humongous photo of him on my screen. I avoided him for weeks after that." -Andrea, 23

Men admit to their dirtiest deeds and most shameless scams ever.

A Very Public Affair

"I go to a small college, and I found out that the girl I had been really into and dating for a while was already seriously involved in a two-year relationship. I hate cheating, so I really took offense. One night, I decided to call her up and ask her to have raunchy phone sex with me. She didn't know it, but I wasn't really, uh, holding up my end of the bargain. Instead, I put her on speakerphone and invited everyone who lived in my dorm hallway to listen in. The next day, everyone knew

about her nastiest fantasies, and word got back Class Ass

to her boyfriend that she was cheating on him. He dumped her immediately,. and now everyone

knows she is a cheater."

-Jonathan, 21

That's a Great Purse

"I went out with two of my good friends-a guy and a girl. We went barhopping around town, and the night was going pretty well. .. that is, until my female friend got sick in the bathroom and my buddy went in with her to help her out. I was on purse duty, and I stood in the bar holding it, still enjoying my buzz. All of a sudden, a cop approached me and started handcuffing me because he thought I had stolen my friend's purse! Apparently, someone had seen my buddy in the women's restroom and called the police because they thought he was up to something shady. When the cops saw me holding my friend's purse, they assumed I must have been the guy causing the trouble. I got pretty angry but couldn't explain what had happened to the cops. Not only did I embarrass myself in front of the entire bar crowd, but I also had to s pen d the night in jail. Thankfully,

the situation was cleared up."

MaIled!

"One time, I was at the mall with some friends when I spotted a really cute girl. I was totally checking her out as we walked by, and to my surprise, she turned and smiled at me. Ex Marks the Spot

"Shortly after I broke up with my girlfriend, she invited me to her dorm for a party. The whole time I was there, a girl I had never met before kept giving me this sultry look from across the room. Before she left for the night. she looked at me again and just smiled.

"When I left later, the girl was in the hallway un locking her dorm room, wh ich happened to be next to my ex-girlfriend's room. She raised her eyebrow, opened her door, and gave me the one-finger come-hither motion. When we got inside, she told me her roommate wasn't coming back and dropped the dress she was wearing. It was a long but hot night, and we didn't even figure out each other's names until the next morning. I snuck out undetected, and my ex never found out I'd had a one-night stand

The next day, after the festivities,. I woke up at 9:25. I had to deal with their evil glances all day and entertain 25 scream ing kindergartners at the same time-all while suffering through the worst headache. To make things even worse, my exit interview was that day. I was almost completely blind and about to pass out, and I had to sit in a room as two adults

scantily clad women dance on the bar, We ended up talking to a couple of hot women beside us, and my friend suggested that I get up on the bar to dance with the bartenders. I wasn't going to do it, but then the girls started egging me on too. As I got onto the bar and started my moves, I didn't realize that guys aren't allowed to get on the bar-ever.. The place was packed, but somehow, the scarily huge bouncers got to me in seconds. They picked me up, hauled me outside the door, and threw me on the ground. HOW TO Introduce a New Guy to Your Friends

Not only will he notice how well you handle that first meeting, but it also could affect how he and your pals get along in the long-term.

So follow these smart tips.

Wait until you're exclusive, There's no "right" time frame for introd ucin g a guy to yo u r f~i ends, but his boyfrien d status should be firmly in place.

Don't make it a double date with your friend and her boyfriend,

The three of you know each other, and your guy will feel like the odd man out Instead, make it a lowkey group thing at a bar or a party.

If you're mingling, don't leave him by himself. Instead, stay by his side, introduce him to people, and briefly chat. That way, he won't feel pressured to maintain a lengthy conversation with a vi rtua I stran g e r,

If, once the two of you are alone, he makes jokes about a friend he Just met, roll with it,

IiIIIIII...._ You might think ,......- your date would be freaked if he knew you loved one particular thing to the point where you'd be happy to wear it, eat it, listen to it, or look at it every day, all day long-something that's so "you," it is you, like Blair Waldorf and headbands or Lady Gaga and not wearing pants.

But that's wrong. Guys find girls with healthy obsessions totally attractive I'm not talking about a hobby; I mean a fixati on that's completely unique. You see, indulging an obsession not only demonstrates that you have both passion and loyalty, but it also can serve as Cliffs Notes for your personality, clueing a guy in to the real you.

Locafor Coconuls

The first obsession I encountered involved coconut cream pie. A girl I dated for a year in Santa Fe, New Mexico, devoured the stuff. Blessed with a

Pue you obsessed with something random? Well, don't hide it.

As one guy explains, a woman's fixation can be a major attraction ... and a window into her soul.

hummingbird's metabolism, this petite brunet would gobble that dessert anytime, anywhere, usually earlyin the moming at a diner located between her place and mine.

We'd pull over at Harry's Roadhouse, and it didn't matter that I thought the pie smelled like suntan lotion. While she dug into a slice the size of Delaware, we'd laugb and I'd pass the time taking cell~ phone pies of the whipped cream that hlUlg from her nose like a stalactite.

In my mind, coconut cream pie became symbolic of what it was that I found so attractive about her: She was sweet and

spontaneous, and she made any situation more fun just by being there.

Sneaker Addiction

Of course, some obsesSiOl1$ will make a guy tum and run, like a clown-mask fetish. But provided it isn't something scm)" flaunting your one-of-a-kind passion is an ea.~y way to lure in the light guy and keep the wrong guys-the ones who will never understand YOLI anyway=from wasting your time.

I noticed my current girlfriend's obsession immediately. She was standing outside a bar, a striking blond dressed in sleek, stylish black dothes ... and a pair of red low-top Converse .. We started dating, and in the

months since, those oldschool sneakers have ended up on her feet Vv'dY more often than her SeAY heels have. At the beach, I was psyched to discover that she wears them with a Bond-girl gold bikini. I don't know much about fashion, but I'm pretty sure the slinky swimsuit and clunky sneakers clash so badly, even Halle Berry couldn't pull off that look.

But my girl does. Or I'd like to think she does. And those red Converse are a constant reminder tint no matter how glamorous or flashy she may look from the ankles up, she's grounded and comfortable with 'who she L~, and she doesn't waver when it comes to what she really loves ... which I hope will someday include me..

Every month, we answer a bunch of your burning beauty questions.

Q If I keep straightening my hair, will it eventually lose its curl?

A No matter how often you straiqhten.you can't remove natural waves, says NYC trichologist Philip Kingsley. Blow-dryers and flatirons temporarily relax

the cuticle; once you wet your strands, your curls will reform. However, applying a lot of heat can change you r texture permanently. Use heat-friendly products for healthy locks.

We like the Iresemme Thermal Creations $4.49.

Don't worry! Your spirals will bounce back .

ANSWER When you're constantly rubbing such a sensitive area,

you create tiny cuts, which let bacteria invade and make the skin

red and peely, says dermatologist Aud fey Kunin. After you blow

Q. I'm a lip-balm addict• I reapply the stuff constantly. So why do my li,ps still get chapped?

·1j~~Wl~ij Do some C51-worthy detective work and exa mine your formulas. A waxy balm that comes

in a stick is preventative;th e wax acts as a barrier to keep moisture inside lips, says Francesca Fusco, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "But when there isn't any moisture to retain and your lips start spiltting, you need an ointment that can seep into the tears to heal them from the inside," she adds. Check out the chart below for our lip-treatment suggestions.

IF YOUR LIPS ARE .. _ Chapped, flaking, and cracked all over

IF YOUR UPS ARE ... Tight and dry but not cracked open

YOU NEED ...

A waxy balm that blocks moisture from eva porating so your lips can stay hydrated from within. TryChapStick Fresh Effects, $3.

YOUNEED .. _

An ointment with petrolatum; it is oil-based and gets in crevices. Try Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream, $25.

Q.WhY

• does my complexion

just look blah?

ANSWE.R Well, ifthefact that it gets dark by 4 p.m. in winter makes you bummed out, everything will probably look blah to you. You know the usual advice for lifting your mood: exercise! Or your dull appearance could be the result of built-up skin cells, which are responsible for giving dark skin tones a grayish cast and fairer types a wan effect. Cells slough off at a slower rate in winter, so it's easy for dead skin to accumulate on the surface. Rev up your body's cell-shedding speed by applying a treatmentwith glycolic acid, like Olay RegeneristThermal Mini Peel, $22.50.

Q. My legs peel so much that when I take off my • black tights, there's usually all this flaked-off skin stuck on them. What should I do?

Ijgmg *' Here's the dea I:Th.e cold winter air is dry, so it's stealing your skin's water and leaving you with parched,scaly-Iooking legs.To get them smooth again, soak for 10 minutes in a warm bath. Blot the water off your body with a towel, then immediately apply a heavy cream that contains exfoliating salicylic acid, like Ambi Soft and Even Cream, $S.

<II Not a bath person ?Try this lizard-skin fix from Jessica Clark, an aesthetic ian at Lather at Equinox Spa.

Mash one banana with ';' can of pineapple (a gentle exfoliator) and 1 tablespoon honey (a natural hydrator).Leave on .Iegs for 15 minutes.then rinse.

THINGS THAT DON'T SUCK ABOUT

WINTER

Ifs not all doom and gloom. These beauty perks don't kick in till the mercury drops.

1 ~O~~;~!~~t~:keup

doesn't melt off since "sweat and oil aren't sitting on top of your skin," says Dr. Fusco.

2 Your complexion evens out. Freckles fade as they aren't

exposed to a lot

of UV rays, which are what make dark spots darker.

3 Your skin stays stubble-free longer. Growth

cycles tend to sync up with the seasons, and hair is in its slow phase right now.

4 You have more clean, fluffy hair days. Because

hair is drier in the winter and you .sweat less, you don't need to shampoo as often.

S Yourfeetgetto take a breather, You won't develop as

many blisters and calluses, thanks to boots and closedtoe shoes.

6 Yourbeauty.routine is shorter. Skip the sunscreen on

your body (but not youdace!) since it's covered up ... unless you're that girl who feels a micro miniskirt is a year-round item.
