FAST FACTS

. The African Youth Forum is the first youth gathering of its kind on the African continent.

. It will be held in Kampala, Uganda between 17-19 July 2010, on the eve of the 15th Ordinary Session
of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).

. The African Youth Forum will be held under the theme "Maternal and Child Health and Development:
African Youth Speak Out". It will resonate with the AU Summit theme of "Maternal, Infant and Child
Health and Development".

. An estimated 110 youth delegates - aged 16-29years - from all 53 countries of the African Union are
expected to attend the African Youth Forum.

. Recommendations from the Forum will be presented by selected youth delegates to the Assembly of
Heads of State and Government.

. In 2009, UNICEF Uganda fronted the idea of Uganda hosting an African Youth Forum alongside the
African Union Summit in Kampala, in July 2010.

. UNICEF - together with UNFPA and other civil society organisations - is playing an active role in the
preparations, under the co-leadership of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, and Gender-labour-Social
Development.

. 2010 was declared the Year of the African Youth, and the International Year of the Youth, by the
African Union and the UN General Assembly, respectively.

. The African Youth Forum is an opportunity for the youth in Africa to express their concerns
regarding maternal and child health programmes and their impact on development in Africa.

. The AYF platform is created to ensure that the voices of the youth are heard by the African leaders
who make key policy commitments on their behalf.

. The Africa Youth Forum is also designed to become a regular meeting alongside future AU Summits,
so that young people's recommendations will regularly be considered by African leaders.
