Kev Messages for the Uganda Launch, 22 June, 2010

. African continent has one of the highest numbers of Maternal and Child Mortality
figures in the world. Leaders in Africa know that to save children's lives we need to
address the health of their mothers; there is an inextricable link between maternal
and child survival. Maternal mortality ratios mirror the overall effectiveness of
health systems; to thrive, women and their children must have access to essential
timely services at home, in the comm unity, and at health facility levels

. We want leaders to know that saving the lives of mothers and their newborns
requires more than just medical intervention; it requires an environment that
empowers women and respects their rights.

. With solid commitment from its leaders, Africa can address basic health, water and
sanitation, education, infrastructure and agriculture challenges in the continent.

. It is important that AU leaders work collectively in providing child friendly education

systems that involves children in the decisions that affect them. We request that
constructive student opinions be given serious considerations

. The Ethical and moral tasks that are entrusted to African leaders ultimately affect
all young people in Africa therefore, together, we must have enough respect for the
present and the future in which the young people are living today and will live in
tomorrow.
