COURSE SYLLABUS

Course Code : Chem 1

Course Title : General Inorganic and Organic Chemistry

Pre-requisite : none

Credit Units : 5 units (3 hours lecture and 6 hours laboratory/week)

Course Description :
This course includes qualitative quantum mechanical description of the atomic, ionic and
molecular structure of matter;theoretical and practical treatment of chemical and nuclear
reactions, property structures correlation of solids, liquids and gases. This course also deals with the
classification, nomenclature, preparation and physiological functions of hydrocarbon compounds.
Laboratory procedure activities are included to provide the students with actual experiences on how to
approach problems in a scientific way.

Course Objectives :
To develop an interest in the study of chemistry and scientific literacy for adult life in a
changing world. Develop an understanding for the basic principles of modern chemistry in the areas of
atomic theory, chemical formulas, chemical equations, bonding, periodicity, states of matter, and
organic substances. To gain knowledge of how to approach real and theoretical problems scientifically.
To become familiar with the use of chemical language, symbols, formulas, and equations. Learn how to
carry out basic laboratory procedures such as observation, data record keeping, and the interpretation
of experimental results.

Specific Objectives :

Part 1
1. Define chemistry as a physical science and give its importance.
2. Identify the different branches of chemistry.
3. Demonstrate scientific method.
4. Compare the different systems of measurements.

Part 2
1. Be familiar with the periodic table.
2. Trace the history and developments of the Periodic Table of Elements.
3. Familiarization with the different elements and their symbol, and their physical and chemical
characteristics.
4. Differentiate Ionic to Covalent Bonds

Part 3
1. Differentiate atomic mass from molecular mass.
2. Explain the meaning of mole and its relation to Avogadro's Number.
3. Calculate the molecular and empirical formula.
4. Differentiate solid,liquid and gas.
5. Compare the properties of solution, suspension and colloids.
6. Define organic compounds.

Part 4
1. Identify and differentiate the different essential nutrients.
2. Acknowledge the works of Filipino chemist, their contribution and biographies.
3. Relate the latest discoveries in chemistry in the nursing profession.
