As the Drug War Heats Up,
We Ask Users: Why Even Start?
Last week, Aiken County authorities rounded
up 10 drug suspects in Ridge Spring after
months of investigative work.
In coordination with multiple agencies, the
sheriff’s office seized nearly 50 grams of crack
cocaine as well as a firearm, drug parapherna-
lia and cash from two residences. The street
value of the crack cocaine is estimated at
$2,300.
The Aiken County Sheriffs Office will be at-
tempting to seize both residences as a result
of the investigations, criminal histories of the
occupants and illegal activities that have been
ongoing at both of the residences, according
to sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Myers
It’s clear there is a drug problem in the
CSRA, and it only seems to be getting worse.
The sheriff’s office, in coordination with the
other agencies, are working hard to curb the
sale and distribution of marijuana, crack and
meth.
These days, narcotics officers seem to be
dealing with more and more meth cases. And
we have to wonder why.
Why do people even start using meth? Do
they know what the drug does to the body? Do
they know how it destroys lives?
According to the experts, athletes and stu-
dents may start using it because of the initial
heightened physical and mental performance.
Blue-collar and service workers may use the
drug to work extra shifts, while young women
often begin using methamphetamine to lose
weight.
Others use meth recreationally to stay ener-
gized at “rave” parties or other social activities.
Hard evidence shows us that meth users of-
ten become addicted and go on to wreck their
lives and the lives of their loved ones.
Meth users are easy to spot: they may
exhibit anxiousness, nervousness, incessant
talking and extreme moodiness and irritabil-
ity. They may also have repetitious behavior,
such as picking at skin or pulling out hair. Their
pupils may be dilated with redness on the iris.
They may have trouble sleeping.
The worst part, they may become aggressive
or violent, or they could go the opposite direc-
tion and suffer severe depression.
Sounds like a drug we want to try.
The most effective techniques we have seen
in fighting methamphetamine abuse are the
pictures of how a person’s face changes over
the years. The picture above is of a woman in
Arizona who seemed to age 20 years in just
seven.
We ask again: Why even start?
Our best advice: If you haven’t started it,
don’t even try it.
In the meantime, the drug war wages on.
And if you want to test the resolve of the sher-
iff’s office, we will leave you with the words of
Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt:
“The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office takes a
zero tolerance stance on the use of or selling

proven in the past, if you are a drug dealer and
choose to deal drugs in Aiken County, we will

 Wal-mart Customer Shows Bare Buttocks to Child

Aiken Public Safety officials used their own
version of “instant replay” to prove a War-
renville man exposed his bare buttocks to
a 10-year-old girl last week inside the Aiken
Wal-mart, a report states.
Charles Seigler told Aiken officers that his
three friends had yanked down his pants
down as a prank, and that it was an accident
that the victim saw his butt.
Relying on Wal-mart’s well-placed video
surveillance, Officer C. Cathcart discovered
footage that Seigler “appeared to be pulling
the back of his shorts down to expose his
buttocks,” a report states.
None of the three friends were near Seigler
or were trying to pull his shorts down, the
report states. In fact, the video shows Seigler
“pulled his shirt up to above his stomach” to
further expose himself, the officer said.
The girl’s family told police that they yelled
at Seigler when he exposed himself, and he

them. The girl’s mother screamed for a man-

the parking lot until an officer arrived.

 Reward in North Augusta Burglary
A reward has been offered for informa-
tion leading to the arrest of the person
responsible for a daytime burglary Monday
at 507 Hillcrest Drive in North Augusta.

 Augusta Dad to Face Charges in Driver Assault
Richmond County authorities said Monday that they
planned to file aggravated battery charges against the
father who attacked a woman driver after she acciden-
tally struck his 2 year old boy.
Lt. Calvin Chew said they were waiting on 24-year-
old James Wright to bury his son before arresting him
in the June 6 attack. Charges were expected as early
as Tuesday (June 15).
Wright is accused of pulling 32-year-old Tuowana

Crystal Patterson, 35, was arrested Friday for

The suspect allegedly made the call from a pay

N.A. Trio Caught Stealing in Augusta
Three young women who
appear to live in the Irish
Traveler community of North
Augusta were busted together
for shoplifting in Augusta earlier
this month.
According to a sheriff’s report,
the women were observed
placing items into a shopping
cart at TJ Maxx on June 2.
When they were done, they put
the items into their handbags
and tried to leave the store
without paying, a report states.
The North Augusta women

Appling Man Charged in Attack on Ex-Girlfriend
An Appling man has been charged with a violent
assault on his ex-girlfriend in which he allegedly
put a pillow over her face and held her against her
will, a sheriff’s report states.
The victim showed up at an Evans substation
Saturday with injuries on her face and neck, dark
marks under her left eye, scratches on her fore-
arm and scars on her kneecap.
The woman said 29-year-old Jody Johnson
had tortured her inside her home on Friday night
because he wanted to know if she had slept with
anyone else. She said Johnson threatened to
beat an answer out of her. He then slapped her
left cheek, pushed her down and placed a pillow
over her face as he threatened to kill her, a report
states.
“He choked her as well, and he threw her to the
floor,” a report states. “She begged him to let her
call her daughter to say goodbye.”
Johnson would not let her leave, according to
the report. Eventually, the woman fell asleep and
awoke to Johnson leaving in a fit of rage, bust-
ing a front porch light and ordering the woman to
“leave the area” because he would hurt her worse
if she stayed.
Officers noted that the victim had scars that she
blamed on previous assaults by Johnson.
During her interview with authorities, the victim
was crying and visibly shaking, saying she feared

A Week of Pranks in Columbia County
Toilet Paper in Trees May Be Funny; It’s Also Criminal, Authorities Say
An Evans woman said someone threw all the pool furni-
ture in the neighborhood pool.
In Martinez, vandals used a window marker to draw a
smiley face on a woman’s car.
And an Evans family woke up to find someone had put
toilet paper all over their shrubs, trees and vehicles.
It’s been a crazy week in Columbia County, with several
bizarre calls that appear to be pranks. But sheriff’s of-
ficials issued a warning Monday that harmless pranks can
result in criminal charges.
“These pranks are rarely done by one person. They’re
usually done by a group, and the biggest problem with
these pranks is that most young people don’t work
through the potential consequences before acting,” said
Capt. Steve Morris with the Columbia County Sheriff’s
Office. “People sometimes chuckle a bit, but when you
look at the full scope to include existing dangers and the
fact that injuries could occur, it’s an issue that has to be
addressed.”
Capt. Morris said the individuals involved are usually
vulnerable to peer pressure, but he warned that prank-
sters face potential charges of disorderly conduct, criminal
trespass or criminal damage to property.
Among the reports in the last week:
• An Evans woman said someone threw a single egg at
her front glass door June 10 on Quinn Drive.
• A Martinez woman said someone used a yellow
window marker to write on her two cars Sunday night on
Mansfield Place. The vandals wrote “tag” on the Mer-
cedes and a sideways smiley face on an Infiniti.
• A Martinez woman living on Colonial Road told authori-
ties that someone entered her front patio June 10 and
flipped over her welcome mat. They also went in her back
yard and turned over her outdoor dining table.
• On Aerie Circle in Evans, a woman reported waking up
Saturday and finding toilet paper all over her family’s yard,
including on her Nissan Sentra and her son’s Jeep Grand
Cherokee. They also discovered a pair of soiled under-
wear on the mailbox. It was size 16.
• On Prince George Avenue in Evans, someone took all
the furniture around the neighborhood pool and dumped
them into the pool between June 10 and June 11.

Terra Renee Powell
Terra Renee Powell is more of a nuisance to law
enforcement than a serious threat.
The 26-year-old Aiken woman was jailed last week
on a drug paraphernalia charge.
Nothing serious, right?
The problem is that Aiken County authorities are
wasting a lot of time on this mischief-maker. Every
time Terra gets busted for shoplifting or trespassing
or disorderly conduct, officers are spending less time
fighting the drug war, looking for burglars or patrolling
our neighborhoods.
And on this last charge, Terra’s must pay a $1,092
fine or sit in jail until the end of the month.
She remained in jail on Monday, which means
taxpayers are providing the troublemaker with a few
meals a day and place to sleep.
In Aiken County, the young woman’s been commit-
ting crimes since before she was old enough to drink,
according to jail records. In fact, Terra was busted four
times in four months in 2004 before dropping off the ra-
dar (or moving) for several years. More recently, she’s
been arrested SEVEN times in the last two years for a
variety of offenses.
