 nǐ kàn ， zhè lǐ de jiāng shuǐ yì biān shì hún zhuó de ，
你 看 ， 这 里 的 江 水 一 边 是 浑 浊 的 ，
Look at this river. It has turbid water on

yì biān shì qīng chè de 。

一 边 是 清 澈 的 。
one side, and clear water on the other.

zhè lǐ de jiāng shuǐ ， yì biān shì hún zhuó de ， yì biān shì qīng chè de 。
这 里 的 江 水 ， 一 边 是 浑 浊 的 ， 一 边 是 清 澈 的 。
The water in the river is turbid on one side and clear on the other. ）

hán jiā ： zhè qīng chè de jiāng shuǐ shì cóng xī biān de wǔ jiāng liú guò lái de 。
韩 佳 ： 这 清 澈 的 江 水 是 从 西 边 的 武 江 流 过 来 的 。
The clear water comes from the Wujiang River in the west.

ér hún zhuó de jiāng shuǐ shì cóng dōng biān de zhēn jiāng liú guò lái de 。
而 浑 浊 的 江 水 是 从 东 边 的 浈 江 流 过 来 的 。
And the turbid water flows from the Zhenjiang River in the east.

liǎng tiáo jiāng shuǐ huì hé zài yì qǐ jiù xíng chéng le běi jiāng 。
两 条 江 水 汇 合 在 一 起 就 形 成 了 北 江 。
The two rivers meet here and flow into the Beijiang River.

dà niú ： zhè wǔ jiāng hé zhēn jiāng yì qīng yì zhuó

大 牛 ： 这 武 江 和 浈 江 一 清 一 浊
The clear Wujiang and the turbid Zhenjiang

zhēn shì jīng wèi fēn míng 。

真 是 泾 渭 分 明 。
are indeed two distinctly different rivers.

hán jiā ： dà niú ， dōu shuō le bàn tiān le ，

韩 佳 ： 大 牛 ， 都 说 了 半 天 了 ，

就 是 韶 关 。
this is Shaoguan.

hán jiā ： dà niú ， lí kāi sháo guān zhè me jiǔ le ，

韩 佳 ：大 牛 ， 离 开 韶 关 这 么 久 了 ，
Daniel, having not been back here for a long time,

duì sháo guān hái yǒu yìn xiàng ba 。

对 韶 关 还 有 印 象 吧 。

dà jiā dōu zhī dào ， sháo guān zài gǔ dài de shí hòu
大 家 都 知 道 ， 韶 关 在 古 代 的 时 候
As we all know, Shaoguan in ancient times

hé ： shì yí gè fēi cháng yǒu míng de guān ài 。

合 ： 是 一 个 非 常 有 名 的 关 隘 。
was a very well-known mountain pass.

dà niú ： duì lā 。
大 牛 ： 对 啦 。
Yes, indeed.

tā bù jǐn shì jūn shì yào dì ，

它 不 仅 是 军 事 要 地 ，
It was not only a place of military importance,

hé ： ér qiě hái shì zhòng yào de shuì guān 。

合 ： 而 且 还 是 重 要 的 税 关 。
but also an important source of tax revenues.

hán jiā ： zěn me dōu shì wǒ zài shuō ya ？

大 牛 ： 我 在 想 ， 这 要 是 古 代 ，
I was thinking if I lived in ancient times,

wǒ kěn dìng shì yí gè zhēn shǒu sháo guān de dà jiāng 。

我 肯 定 是 一 个 镇 守 韶 关 的 大 将 。
I would surely have been a general guarding Shaoguan.

yì fū dāng guān ， wàn fū mò kāi 。

一 夫 当 关 ， 万 夫 莫 开 。
 One man can hold back ten thousand enemies.

hán jiā ： jiù nǐ ā ， chà yuǎn le 。

韩 佳 ： 就 你 啊 ， 差 远 了 。
You are far from being a qualified general.

dà niú ： nǐ gàn ma zhè me kàn bù qǐ wǒ ā ？

大 牛 ： 你 干 吗 这 么 看 不 起 我 啊 ？
Why are you looking down upon me?

hán jiā ： bú shì kàn bù qǐ nǐ 。

韩 佳 ： 不 是 看 不 起 你 。
I'm not looking down upon you.

zài sháo guān lì shǐ shàng ， yǒu yí wèi hè hè yǒu míng de zhēn shǒu dà jiāng 。
在 韶 关 历 史 上 ， 有 一 位 赫 赫 有 名 的 镇 守 大 将 。
In the history of Shaoguan, there was a meritorious garrison commander.

nǐ gēn tā yì bǐ ， jiù xiǎn dé xiāng xíng jiàn chù lou 。

你 跟 他 一 比 ， 就 显 得 相 形 见 绌 喽 。
Compared with him, you are "xiang xing jian chu".

nǐ gēn tā yì bǐ jiù xiǎn dé xiāng xíng jiàn chù lou 。

你 跟 他 一 比 就 显 得 相 形 见 绌 喽 。
You pale in comparison to him.

dà niú ： nǐ shuō wǒ shén me ？

大 牛 ： 你 说 我 什 么 ？
What did say about me?

hán jiā ： xiāng xíng jiàn chù 。

韩 佳 ： 相 形 见 绌 。
"xiang xing jian chu" (be far inferior by comparison)

chù jiù shì zhǐ bù zú 、 bú gòu de yì sī 。

绌 就 是 指 不 足 、不 够 的 意 思 。
"chu" means deficiency and insufficiency.

xiāng xíng jiàn chù zhè gè chéng yǔ

相 形 见 绌 这 个 成 语
The idiom, "xiang xing jian chu",means that

jiù shì bǐ yù gēn lìng yí gè rén huò zhě shì shì wù xiāng bǐ
就 是 比 喻 跟 另 一 个 人 或 者 是 事 物 相 比
by comparison, somebody or something

jiù xiǎn dé yuǎn yuǎn bù zú le 。

就 显 得 远 远 不 足 了 。
is far inferior, or not so good.

dà niú ： xiāng xíng jiàn chù bǐ yù gēn lìng yí shì wù xiāng bǐ yuǎn yuǎn bù zú 。
大 牛 ：相 形 见 绌 比 喻 跟 另 一 事 物 相 比 远 远 不 足 。
"xiang xing jian chu" means to pale in comparison.
 xiāng xíng jiàn chù 。
相 形 见 绌 。
Xiang xing jian chu.

wǒ dǎo yào kàn kàn zhè gè rén shì shuí 。

我 倒 要 看 看 这 个 人 是 谁 。
I'd like to know who this man was.

hán jiā ： wǒ shuō de jiù shì běi sòng míng chén yú jìng 。
韩 佳 ： 我 说 的 就 是 北 宋 名 臣 余 靖 。
He was the noted Northern Song Dynasty Prime Minister Yu Jing.

nǐ kàn ， zhè jiù shì wèi le jì niàn tā ér jiàn de fēng cǎi lóu 。
你 看 ， 这 就 是 为 了 纪 念 他 而 建 的 风 采 楼 。
Look, the Fengcai Tower was built just to commemorate his deeds.

dà niú ： kàn lái shì jì néng wén yòu néng wǔ ， wén wǔ shuāng quán 。
大 牛 ： 看 来 是 既 能 文 又 能 武 ， 文 武 双 全 。
He was skillful both with the pen and the sword.

hán jiā ： shì ā ， sháo guān chú le zhè fēng cǎi lóu zhī wài ，
韩 佳 ： 是 啊 ， 韶 关 除 了 这 风 采 楼 之 外 ，
In addition to Fengcai Tower,

hái yǒu yì tiáo fēng cǎi lù yě shì wèi le jì niàn tā 。

还 有 一 条 风 采 路 也 是 为 了 纪 念他 。
a road, Fengcai Road, was also built in his honor.

dà niú ： ná wǒ gēn běi sòng de chéng xiāng xiāng bǐ ，

大 牛 ： 拿 我 跟 北 宋 的 丞 相 相 比 ，
In comparison with a Northern Song prime minister,

néng bù xiāng xíng jiàn chù ma 。

能 不 相 形 见 绌 嘛 。
I would be of course "xiang xing jian chu".

hán jiā ： sháo guān zhè gè dì fāng rén jié dì líng 。

韩 佳 ： 韶 关 这 个 地 方 人 杰 地 灵 。
Shaoguan is known for producing famous people.

zhù míng de lì shǐ rén wù duō zhe ne ，

著 名 的 历 史 人 物 多 着 呢 ，
Yu Jing was just one of the historical figures

kě bù zhǐ yú jìng yí gè rén ā 。

可 不 止 余 靖 一 个 人 啊 。
that existed in Shaoshan.

dà niú ： hái yǒu fó jiāo chán zōng de chuàng shǐ rén — huì néng dà shī 。
大 牛 ： 还 有 佛 教 禅 宗 的 创 始 人 — 慧 能 大 师 。
Another one was the famous monk Huineng, founder of the Chan (Zen) Buddhism.

hán jiā ： jì xìng bú cuò 。 hái yǒu ？

韩 佳 ： 记 性 不 错 。 还 有 ？

大 牛 ： 还 有 ？ 谁 啊 ？

zěn me zì jǐ yín qǐ shī lái le ？

zài shuō zhè lǐ jì méi yǒu yuè liàng ， yòu méi yǒu dà hǎi 。
再 说 这 里 既 没 有 月 亮 ， 又 没 有 大 海 。
Besides, there is neither moon nor sea here.

hán jiā ： dà niú ， nǐ hái jì bu jì dé

韩 佳 ： 大 牛 ， 你 还 记不 记 得

大 牛 ：没 想 到 这 位 大 文 学 家 、大 政 治 家 也 出 身 韶 关 。
I didn't know this great writer and politician was also born in Shaoguan.

“ hǎi shàng shēng míng yuè ” ， duō hǎo de shī jù ！

“ 海 上 生 明 月 ” ， 多 好 的 诗 句 ！
"Over the sea the moon shines bright" ，what a nice verse!
