HIGHWAY DEVELOPMENT IN

INDIA

INTRODUCTION
• This comes under the ministry of road transport & high ways.
• Mr. Kamal Nath is the Minister for Road Transport and Highways of
India. He was previously, for five years, from 2004 to 2009, the
Commerce & Industry Minister in the Union Cabinet.
• As Commerce & Industry Minister of India, Kamal Nath enunciated
India’s first comprehensive Foreign Trade Policy in 2004, laying out
a coherent roadmap with a twin focus on exports as well as
employment. He was successful in tripling India’s foreign trade
within this period, and engineering a seven-fold increase in FDI in-
flows to India. Significant strides have also been made in the areas
of Intellectual Property and Industrial Design.
HISTORY
• The first evidence of road development in
the Indian subcontinent can be traced back to
approximately 4000 BC from the ancient cities
of Harrapa and Mohenjo-Daro of the Indus
Valley Civilization(BRONZE AGE). Around the
1st Century AD, the ancient Silk Road (TRADE)
came into being, which passed through
northern India and China.

• The roadways map of India shows five types of roads
namely:
• National Highways
• State Highways
• District Roads
• Village Roads
• Other

A MAJOR INITIATIVE FOR CAPACITY
ENHANCEMENT OF THE NATIONAL HIGHWAYS

• As National Highways comprise about 2% of the total


road length in the country and yet carryover 40% of
total traffic, the first and the foremost task mandated to
the NHAI is the implementation of NHDP- comprising of
the Golden Quadrilateral and North-South & East-West
Corridors. In addition to the projects under NHDP, the
NHAI is also currently responsible for about 1 ,000 km
of Highways connecting major Ports & also on National
Highways 8A, 24, 6, 45 & 27. Highways length with
NHAI currently is around 14,162 km.
Golden Quadrilateral (GQ)
Length :- 5846 km
Connecting Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai.
North-South & East-West Corridors
Length :-7 ,300 km 
Kashmir to Kanyakumari -4000 km (with a spur to Cochin) and Silchar to
Porbandar 3300 km.
