AGILITY TESTS

Agility

Agility is the ability to change body position or direction of the body rapidly.
Agility tests require the subject to run around a circuit of objects; turning,
stopping and starting. Agility is influenced by balance, coordination, position
of center of gravity, running speed and skill.

Agility demands for sports are very specific to each sport, in terms of the
speed and direction of turning. It also includes extra factors suck as
controlling a ball or holding a racket or stick.

Agility Tests

The best agility tests are simple ones, where the results cannot be confused
or lost in the complexity of the test. Design the agility test for each factor
you are testing; for instance, turning at 60 degrees, 90 degrees turning at
180 degrees. Being good at one doesn't necessarily mean you will be good at
turning at the others. It is also possible that turning in one direction, e.g.
turning left, will vary from agility in turning right.

Break down the agility movements you want to measure into individual
factors and measure each individually, such as turning left versus turning
right, and turning at different angles.

A simple agility test is the zigzag test.

ZigZag Test

A standard zig zag course is with four cones placed on the corners of a
rectangle 10 by 16 feet, with one more cone placed in the centre.
If the cones are labeled 1 to 4 around the rectangle going along the longer
side first, and the centre cone is C, the test begins at 1, then to C, 2, 3, C, 4,
then back to 1.
The total distance run should not be too great so that fatigue does not
become a factor.
The athlete to run a course in the shortest possible time.
Variations

This test may be modified by changing:

the angles between the cones

the distance between cones
the circuit direction
the number of circuits performed
