STRAIN ENERGY:- The work done in straining the material, within

the elastic limit, is known as strain energy.
strain energy = work done

RESILIENCE:- The strain energy stored in a body due to external loading

with in elastic limit is known as resilience.
resilience =
Where = stress
v = volume

PROOF RESILIENCE:- It is the max. energy stored in a body upto elastic

limit is known as proof resilience.
Proof resilience =
Where proof stress.

MODULUS OF RESILIENCE:- It is the proof resilience per unit volume.

modulus of resilience =

MODES OF LOADING:- There are three types of modes of loading :

1. Gradually applied load
2. Suddenly applied load
3. Falling load
when a load W is placed in a piece metal i.e. staring from 0 and gradually
increasing to 1, 2, 3, till the total load becomes W, it is said to be a gradually
applied load. When a load W , as a whole , is put instantly on a body, it is said to be
suddenly applied load, and when it is made to fall from a certain height, it is known
as falling load.

Calculation of instantaneous stress induced due to gradual loading, sudden load and falling loads:
1. Gradually applied load:- consider a load W is applied gradually to a material. When the
load W has been applied to the material, the material deforms and stress is
introduced in the material.

Potential energy lost by the load = strain energy stored in the material
Wx= Ax

SUDDENLY APPLIED LOAD:- Consider a tensile load be applied to a material suddenly and produce an
extension x . The work done will be given by W x . Suppose to be a load which increases gradually from zero
and produces the same extension x, the work done now is given by x.

Since the bar is strained an equal amount in each case, the strain energy is the same in each case, and
consequently the applied energies will be equal.
x = Wx

Thus a suddenly applied load required to produce a given strain is just half the magnitude of that required, for
the same strain when gradually applied. Such a gradually applied load is called an equivalent load.
=

FALLING LOAD:- Suppose a weight W falls on the collar through height 'h' . Consider a
rod of length 'L' with end fixed and a collar at the lower end.

Let x = the extension
