Industrial Relation

Major Project

The assignment may be attempted either individually or in-groups of typically three or four
students. The assignment is a learning activity and is designed to address real Industrial Relation
issues in organizations.

Choose an organization with which you are familiar. Write a report describing the organizations
Industrial Relation Journey.

Your report should address the following issues:

• Explain the imperative driving the organization move to improve Industrial Relations. Discuss
the Industrial Relation philosophy adopted. (What is IR for the organization? When did it start
formally/informally, Where, Who, Why and How did it start? etc.
• Explain the strategic role of Industrial Relation in the organization and show how it
contributes to the organization's competitive advantage.

• Gather some information on the Management and Shop floor issues

• Discuss about the Trade Union; Total numbers if any, if there are no unions describe the
ways they come up with group grievances or problems. Also include Positive and Negative
issues about the union.

• Highlight on Collective bargaining if any, if not discuss on how do they come up with group
requests.

• Explain the ways company handles the conflicts. Also include the types of conflicts and ways
of settlement. Comment on their Grievance handling. Outline the Workers Participation
Schemes or similar to that.

• Compare the Organization rules with the labor law 1992.

• Develop some recommendations for improving the Industrial Relation of the organization over
the next two years. Comment on any shortcomings in present or past approaches and
suggest alternate solutions or methodologies that could be applied.

Assessment Criteria

• Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of strategies and a holistic approach to


Industrial Relation as outlined in the learning objectives. (40%)

• Demonstration of the ability to apply the concepts of Industrial Relations to an organization


(20%)

• Critical assessment and analysis of the literature and organizational practice (10%)

• Consistency of conclusions or recommendations with arguments, evidence or literature


reference. (20%)

• Quality of written presentation including appropriate use of tables, graphs or supporting


documents. Clarity of expression including correct use of Industrial Relation terms, the use of
citations from the literature and referencing. (10%)
