Operation is one of medical treatment which can cause physiological and

phsycological responses. Greater parts of patients see that surgery is a big event
without thinking its complexities. And they usually react in fear and anxiety at a certain
level. Nurse should be sensitive to the patient’s needs and specific reaction for
determining the appropriate method in nursing intervention due to the reduction of
patient’s anxiety. One of the alternative therapy to reduce patient’s anxiety is music
therapy. This research aims at knowing the influence of music therapy towards the
reduction of anxiety level in planned pre operation patient. This is a pre-experimental
research with One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The samples consist of 21
respondents, taken with Purposive Sampling method, which are hospitalized patients (13
years old and up) that will have a planned surgery. Variables measured in this research
are patient’s anxiety level before and after given the music therapy. The result shows
that before given the music therapy, 71,4% patients experience in middle anxiety level,
19% patients experience in high anxiety level, and 9,5% patients experience in low
anxiety level. And after given the music therapy, the result shows that 66,7% patients
experience in low anxiety level, 19% patients experience in middle anxiety level, and
14,3% patients experience in high anxiety level. These data indicate that 61,9%
respondents show the alteration in the reduction of anxiety level, and 38,1% do not show
the alteration of anxiety level. Based on the results of Wilcoxon Test (α=0,05), level
anxiety in planned pre operation patients show that Zvalue= -3,606 and Ztable= ±1,96.
These calculations show that Zvalue is off limits of Ztable with Pvalue 0,000 < α 0,05. The
results of Wilcoxon Test indicate a refusal of H0. In conclusion, there’s an influence of
music therapy towards the reduction of anxiety level in planned pre operation patient.
Writer suggests to also considering the type of music which is liked by the patients.
