FSH
• Active early in the cycle
• Maturation of ovum
• Increase estrogen

LH
• Most active at the midpoint of the cycle
• Responsible for ovulation or release of mature
egg cell from ovary

ESTROGEN
• Hormone for women
• consist of three compounds estrone (E1),
estradiol (E2), estriol (E3)
• Thickens endometrium
• Inhibits secretion of FSH

PROGESTERONE
• Hormone for pregnant women
• Helps maintain the endometrium
• Inhibits secretion of LH

ovulation
• primordial follicle (5-7 million)
Birth – 2 million
7 years of age – 500,000
22 years of age – 300,000
• Signs:

spinnbarkeit test
fern test
increase in basal body temperature

• Proliferative/ follicular/ postmenstrual/

estrogenic
low estrogen causes hypothalamus to
release GnRh. Cervical mucus becomes
abundant. Endometrium becomes highly
vascular, with it’s thickness increasing by
eightfolds.
• Secretory/ ovulation/ progestational
Phases
estrogen level increases thereby inhibiting
the pituitary to secrete FSH, releasing the
LH. Endometrium becomes very soft,
spongy and edematous.

phases
• Ischemic
after 7 days from ovulation, corpus luteum
degenerates (8-10 days)
production of estrogen & progesterone decreases
capillaries rupture with minute hemorrhages
endometrium sloughs off
• Menstruation
blood from the ruptured capillaries
mucin from glands
fragments of endometrial tissue
microscopic, atrophied & unfertilized ovum
