A study to asses the knowledge and attitude about self care among primary hypertensive patients at selected hospitals in Tumkur was conducted in partial fulfillment of the requirement of the Degree of Master of Science in Nursing at Shridevi college of Nursing, Tumkur. The study, Objectives are: 1. To assess the knowledge and attitude regarding self care among hypertensive patients. 2. To correlate the knowledge and attitude regarding self care among patients with primary hypertension. 3. To associate the demographic variables of primary hypertensive patients with the knowledge and attitude regarding self care METHODS: The research design of the study was descriptive research design. The population was primary hypertensive patients in the age group of 40 – 65 years. The sample consisted of 100 primary hypertensive patients those who are visiting outpatient clinic in selected hospitals. The patients are selected by purposive sampling technique. The tool comprised of knowledge questionnaires and attitude scale. The questionnaire given to the patient and the test was conducted. The date obtained from the study was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS:
The overall knowledge score was
62.91% and most of the patients are having more knowledge regarding signs and symptoms (60.5%) than heart disease (56%) and lifestyle modifications (58.83%). The overall percentage of the attitude was 60.46%. The linear co-relation between overall knowledge and attitude was r =0.745 which was statistically significant at p<0.0001. The chi – square value showed that there is no significant association (p>0.05) between demographic characteristics and knowledge and attitude. INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSION: The above finding of the present study shows that the primary hypertensive patients are having more knowledge and attitude regarding self care activities. The findings of the study show that there is significant relationship between the knowledge and attitude.
