Abstract

The aim of this investigation was to discover how Hunter S. Thompson

manipulates language in order to portray the subversion of the American Dream.

Thompson’s journalism was groundbreaking and unique to previous forms of journalism.

His work was dubbed “gonzo” journalism, and it is important to investigate how this

effects the major themes and effects of his writing. Numerous articles and novels were

used during the research process for a general idea of his style of writing. Three specific

pieces including an article, a short story, and a novel were chosen for further analysis.

While analyzing the texts, the most dominant theme was the corruption and degradation

that shattered the idealistic ambitions of the American people in the 1970s. Biographical

information about Thompson was also researched and the influence of his past

experiences on his writing was noted. In order to answer the question, topics such as

writing style, literary devices, tone, subjectivity, and theme were discussed. The

definition and explanation of the term “gonzo” was also essential in understanding the

analysis and drawing conclusions. However, the language and its effects were the

primary focus. Due to the niche nature of this form of journalism, it was challenging to

find critiques that were contradictory. So, the investigation did not compare various

critiques, but rather delved into the details of Thompson’s writing. After researching the

issues, my conclusion states that Thompson’s subjective participation in his journalism,

gonzo style, and sarcastic sense of humor allow for a valid and interesting portrayal of the

subversion of the American Dream.
