Dear Speaker Pelosi, Leader Hoyer, Leader Boehner, and Minority Whip Cantor:
Tomorrow, the House will vote on H.R. 847, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and
Compensation Act, legislation we authored to provide care for the more than 36,000
Americans who are sick or injured as a direct result of the terrorist attacks of September
11, 2001. Thank you for your efforts to bring this bill before the House for another vote.
It is our strong belief that caring for 9/11 first responders and survivors is not just a New
York issue. Those who are suffering hail from all 50 states and 428 of the 435
Congressional districts nationwide. Nearly every member ofthe House has constituents
for whom the 9/11 attacks are not history, but an ongoing nightmare that is slowly
robbing them of their health, their strength, and, in the worst cases, their lives.
We know you will agree that the debate on the House floor tomorrow should respect and
honor the sacrifices so many made on behalf of our country during one of America's
darkest hours. Accordingly, we know we can count on you to urge our colleagues on
both sides of the aisle to have a debate that focuses on our national obligation to the
living victims of9/11, and not to try to use the proceedings for political gain.
Again, we thank you for your attention to this issue and your support for those who are
still suffering because of the attacks on our nation.
