CHARACTER OF MRS.

MELDON
INTRODUCTION:-
The Character of Mrs. Meldon is the main character of the main play “The Progress”. She is
forty three years of old and lost her husband and the only son in the war. She has only a brother
named Professor. Henry Corrie. It is a great scientist but never cares the feelings of her sister.
Therefore she thinks that she has been left alone in the world. She can be liked for the following
qualities of her character.

A SIMPLE WOMAN:-
Mrs. Meldon is a brave, simple woman. She has been suffering from the death of her
husband and son, Eddie. She is passing her life without any particular objectives. She has no
interest in worldly manners. She always wears black dress because of the death of her son and
husband.

A LOVING MOTHER:-
Mrs. Meldon is a loving mother. She loves her son dearly and has many wished for her
son in future. She became very happy when her son had scored 10 runs in his first match. She
was very proud when Eddie became an officer in the army. She is greatly shocked over her
son’s death and was living on the memories of her son.

STRONGLY HATES WAR:-

Mrs. Meldon is deadly against the war. She hats the war because the war has snatched her
only son. She considers that war is organized to destroy the boys.
She thinks wars always bring out the misery for the world and millions of people are killed
including men women and children as a result of it. When Corrie invented the formula of a
deadly bomb, she feels miserable and looks upon the war as the horrible thing.

A LOVER OF HUMANITY:-

Mrs. Meldon is a lover of humanity. She does not want that any other women would
suffer the shock of the death of her son, brother and husband. When she comes to know that her
brother has discovered the formula of a horrible bomb, which will kill millions of people at a
time she strongly opposed it. She requests her brother to destroy his invention but he refused. At
last she kills her brother with a knife for the welfare of humanity. This act proves her that she
was a true lover of humanity. In the light of the above mentioned qualities, it can be said that the
character of Mrs. Meldon is quit appealing and loving character.
