Old Times: Pedagogy
‡ In the times of the OLD Greek and Romans,
teachers were slaves.
‡ The word for teacher ´pedagµ meant a slave
‡ Hence ´pdagogyµ mean the sciences taught be
the slaves to the young children.
‡ All they had to do was to deliver the
information (mainly about letters and grammar)
to the children.
medagogy
‡ From this time, and till now in some cultures,
teachers are looked down upon.
‡ Some people give them names and labels related
working with young children.
‡ The profession of a teacher was thus regarded as
an inferior one.
‡ People had to depend on low quality teachers
and contend themselves on the low quality
education their children receive because of these
teachers.
Pedagogy
‡ In fact teachers themselves though low of
themselves and very few of them were
remarkable teachers.
‡ Those few teachers were also scholars
and were known as scientists more than
as teachers.
Pedagogy
‡ In Islam, teachers were highly regarded as
inheritors of the legacy of prophets.
‡ Thus, it was the duty of teachers to become
scholars as well.
‡ In Islamic tradition, a teacher and a
student are referred to as ´scholar and
learnerµ.
Technology
‡ With the beginnings of the 2oth century,
people began to realize that their children
are the most valuable thing in their life, so
they deserve high quality education by
high quality teachers using educational
aids.

Ôdeology
‡ What is needed and expected in the coming
phase is to focus on ideology; the ideas
rather than the information.
‡ In Ideology teaching, the focus is not on the
information (as it was with Pedagogy), nor
on the medium (as is the case with
technology), rather it is on how to generate
ideas for managing one·s environment.
