The Statement of Mon Affairs Union (MAU)

30th September , 2010

The Mon Affairs Union held its Central Committee meeting for 3-days on the Thai-Burmese
border. In the meeting, members of central committee from 4-Mon regions have discussed
issues related to the current political developments, human rights and civil societies in all those
regions and the Constitution of Ramanya Monland has also been reviewed. In particular, the
issue of 2010-election was discussed at length and the stance of the MAU on the so-called 2010
election was firmly adopted.

The military regime is vigorously attempting to hold on power by all means and there is no
comparison for its brutality towards its own people and citizen. The policy of ethnic cleansing
has been systematically implemented and the ethnic nationalities have been extremely
marginalized and suppressed. Due to the violation and the denial of the democratic rights,
human rights, the rights of ethnic nationalities, and the ongoing refusal to settle the political
differences peacefully, international community around the world has increasingly condemned
and applied economic, diplomatic and financial sanctions on the military regime. The military
regime is bitterly hated and disliked by people from all walks of life including the Buddhist
monks.

Meanwhile, it is evident that, in order to legalize the 2008 Constitution which was single-
handedly written by them and also claim that the incoming government is elected by the
people, the military regime is utilizing all means of deception and threat to force the people to
vote in the election. Therefore, people should be well aware that the election is deliberately
planned to prolong the military rule in Burma and hence should analyze the cost-benefit of it.

The Mon Affairs Union firmly stands that the election on November 7, 2010 will not be free
and fair and therefore urges all Mon people not to go and vote. Instead, Mon people should find
all ways and means to boycott the election so that it will not gain the legitimacy. In addition,
we would like to urge our Mon disobey all orders and plans setup by the military regime, and
then work together in unity among us in our national struggles so that we achieve our Mon
national victory.
