From Jail to Release

The path convicted criminals take

Kitsap County Jail

An offender is arrested and,
if he or she doesn't post bail,
serves time in the county jail
awaiting trial and sentencing.

JAIL
Superior Court Judge
An offender receives his or her
sentence from a judge. If the
sentence is more than a year, the
offender will go to a state
Department of Corrections
prison to serve time.

PRISON Department
of Corrections
Each offender gets a
"maximum release
date," which is the
judge's sentence, and
the "earned release
date," which includes
time off for good
behavior.

Calculating
Final
Sentence
State prison
inmates are
eligible for up to
a third of their
sentence off for
"good time."
That time is
calcuated when
they are in prison.

Where Math Was

Miscalculated
DOC relies upon the county to
calculate good time credited
during their time in the county
jail. Kitsap County was
miscalculating it until recently.

Release
By the end of their sentence, Kitsap inmates have been serving longer
sentences for the same crimes than inmates from other Washington
counties that credit inmates with the same amount of earned release time.
