'Cool' iPod gets students' approval
A NEW iPod Touch application,
supported by Independent Schools
Queensland, is crossing social, cul-
tural and language boundaries to
inspire great results among stu-
dents in and out of the classroom.
Independent Schools Queens-
land executive director David Ro-
bertson said the new online learn-
ing platform for English as
Second Language (ESL) students
was being trialled at 10 indepen-
dent schools, including Ipswich
Girls' Grammar School.
"It's a combination of a log-in
website for teachers to post lessons
and an iPod Touch application that
students can use to access content
and submit their work," Mr Robert-
son said.
"The trial is a great example of
how schools are beginning to un-

derstand the potential value of new
technologies and learning capabil-
ities.
"Even better, the students have
deemed the application 'cool' and
has encouraged them to extend
their learning experience outside
the confines of the classroom and
school."

was funded through the Federal
Government's Smarter Schools Na-
tional Partnership program.
"The 12-month trial only began
in April this year, but the results
are already signalling its success,"
he said.
"Students are more engaged
with their learning because they're
using a device they're familiar with
and are motivated to use. The pro-

gram has also seen clear improve-
ments in their English speaking
and listening abilities."
Independent Schools Queens-
land assistant director (Teaching
and Learning) Janelle Wills said
the iPod Touch application provid-
ed students and teachers with a
number of advantages.
"The technology allows students
to listen to their tasks or teacher's
feedback as many times as they
need to, 24-hour access to learning
materials and the opportunity to
access results or submit work out-
side of the classroom," Ms Wills
said.
Teachers are rewarded with
more engaged and confident
students."
