RANGE OF
MOTIONS IN
EVERYDAY
LIFE
Acceleration
in the
direction of
motion
What is acceleration in
the direction of motion?
Acceleration is the change
in velocity over
time. Because velocity is a
vector quantity, it can
change in two ways: a
change in magnitude and/or
a change in direction. In
one dimension, i.e. a line,
acceleration is the rate at
which something speeds up.
However, as a vector
 quantity, acceleration is
also the rate at which
direction changes.
Example of acceleration in
the direction of the motion.
motion
An example of
acceleration in the
direction of motion is
a smooth spherical
stone dropped from
the hand on a
windless day. All the
motion is straight
down, toward the
centre of the earth,
and so is the
acceleration.
Acceleration
against the
direction of
motion
What is acceleration
against the direction of
motion ?
When acceleration is
opposite (against)
to the direction of
motion, the
magnitude of the
velocity decreases,
meaning that the
object slows down.
It is also known as
retardation.
Example of acceleration
against the direction of
motion
An example is the
application of the brakes
to slow or stop a car.
During the time that the
pressure remains on the
brake pedal, the car's
acceleration is
negative ... meaning
opposite to the direction
of motion ... and the
car's speed is
decreasing.
Acceleration
is uniform
What is uniform
acceleration?

Uniform
or constant, acceleration
is a type of motion in
which the velocity of an
object changes equal
amounts in equal time
periods
Example of uniform
acceleration
An example of an object
having uniform
acceleration would be
a ball rolling down a
hill. The object picks
up velocity as it goes
down the ramp with
equal changes in time.
Speed is
uniform
What is uniform speed ?

Uniform speed is
the equal
distance
covered by a
body in equal
intervals of
time.
Example of uniform
speed

An example would be
a planet in a
circular orbit or an
escalator moving
with a constant
speed.
Speed is non-
uniform
What is non-uniform
speed?
When a body moves
unequal distances
in equal intervals
of time or vice-
versa, then the
body is said to
describe non-
uniform speed or
motion.
Example of non-uniform
speed
An athlete running
along a circular
path has non –
uniform speed or
motion that means
his speed keeps
changing on and is
not constant.
