MATH ANXIETY

Math anxiety is common. To decrease the anxiety you must recognize that math
builds on itself. Each new fact is based on a previously learned fact. You must
know your basic math steps, rules and formulas before you can move to higher
level math problems. Rules never change because math builds in orderly
progression. Attendance is essential to ensure success in the course. Practice and
class preparation are very important.

Precision really counts in math, ways to improve your math scores are:

1. Write numbers clearly. Sloppy written numbers can be misread or confused

with others.

2. Place numbers in straight column. Line up numbers so there is no mistaking

their place when working a problem. This especially applies to decimals.
Double check for misplaced decimal points.

3. Make sure numbers copied from a question are written correctly on a work-
sheet. Double check for accuracy.

4. Precise reading of math word problems is of utmost importance. Read the

problem twice, once to get the overall meaning, and then again to get its
precise meaning.

5. Simplify a complicated problem by taking it one step at a time.

6. Ask questions in class to clear up any doubts.1
