Second Problem

This is a problem of Non Steady state 1-D heat transfer through different materials having
different thermal properties;

Thermal conductivities of the materials = k1, k2 and

Thermal Diffusivities α1 and α2

The thermal diffusivity can be defined as

  k  Cp 

Where,

ρ = Density of the material and Cp = Specific heat

Problem Statement:

We have a composite wall of the above thermal properties. Suppose, for a very small period of
time a certain amount of heat flux is produced at x = 0 and then it is cooled down. This is a
uniform pulse of heat flux. The thermal model is

Uniform heat flux or pulse, q

x=0

T1, K1, α1 x=L1

T2, K2, α2 x=L2

We have to find out the temperature field along x direction with respect to time or

T  x, t   T1 ( x, t ) T2 ( x, t )

The given constants are

   1  2  , K   k1 k2 
The governing equations are

T1   2T 
 1  21  , 0<x  L1
t  x 
T2   2T 
  2  22  , L1 <x  L2
t  x 

And The Boundary Conditions are

t
Δt
(1)

At x=0∧¿ 0

Heat pulse q is applied

???????????????????

Does this heat pulse occur only when t=0, or it remains in the whole process? If it only occurs
when t=0, we have,

T 1 ( 0 , t )=qδ ( t ) , where δ ( t ) isthe delta function , q isa constant

T 2 ( x ,t )=0 , L1 < x< L2

However, from the boundary condition (2) (below), it seems the flux q remains in the whole process.

If this is the case, then q should be added to the equations other than as boundary condition.

(2)

At x=L1∧t> 0
T 1=T 2 i. e T 1 ( L1 , t ) =T 2 ( L1 ,t ) , t> 0

∂T 1 ∂ T2 ∂T
−k 1 =−k 2 asq=−k
∂ x at x=L 1
∂ x at x= L 1
∂x

(3)

At x=L2∧t> 0

∂T 1
−k 1 =0 (insulated )
∂ x at x=L 2

The system model is,

T1   2T 
 1  21  , 0<x  L1 ,
t  x 
T2   2T 
  2  22  , L1 <x  L2 ,
t  x 

with boundary conditions,

At x=L1∧t> 0

T 2 ( x ,t )=0 , L1 < x< L2

T 1=T 2 i. e T 1 ( L1 , t ) =T 2 ( L1 ,t ) , t> 0

∂T 1 ∂ T2 ∂T
−k 1 =−k 2 asq=−k
∂ x at x=L 1
∂ x at x= L 1
∂x

∂T 1
−k 1 =0 (insulated )
∂ x at x=L 2
where  , K are material dependent parameters, independent of x, t . q can be read via the
experiment device.
