TUTORIAL 6

1. Peach trees were found to be attacked with nematodes resulted in stem

necrotic disease. Two pesticide treatments and one control were used to test the
effectiveness of pesticides in treating the disease. Six disease peach trees were
used for each treatment. After six months of treatment, the height of the trees (cm)
were measured. The data obtained were tabulated below. Analyze the data and
determine whether the pesticides used have different effect as compared to the
control.

2. A study was carried out to evaluate the differences in the starch content
(µg/mg) of tomatoes that are planted in soil supplied with four different
nutrients. Twenty tomato seedlings were obtained and five seedlings were
randomly taken for each nutrient test. The starch content for each seedling
was determined after two months supply with the nutrients. Analyze the data
and which nutrient will you recommend for higher production of starch
content.

3. A zoologist measure the tail length of rats found on three different islands,
Pulau Tioman, Pulau Paya and Pulau Perhentian. Data obtained are as

Analyze the data to determine whether isolation has affected in the tail length
of the rats.

4. Data below showed the density of a species of insect found at different level
of the forest at Penang National park.

Forest level Density pf insects (number/m2)

Big tree canopy 69 53 58 41
Small tree level 84 51 73 66
Scrub level 140 121 96 82
Soil surface 24 36 29 40
.
(a) Analyze the data to test the hypothesis that in general the density of insect
is different with different level of the forest.

(b) If the results from (a) indeed showed that the density of insect was
different at different forest level, and determine which level that particular
insect species prefer to live.
