Invitation
Contrary to the general expectation for lasting peace after the end of the Cold War, such a
time has not come. It is rather constant arms race, conflicts and economic crises that still
Prevail, At the centre of this continuity lies excessive military spending, The current global
economic crisis is not free from it
With the world military spending skyrocketing by 65% in thelast decade, the governments
of US, China, Russia, South Korea and North Korea dominate the curve by spending
together more than half of the world military spending, The arms race in the Korean pen-
insula and the Asia-Pacific region instigates military tension and confrontation rather than
bringing peace and stability to the region, Placing emphasis and resources on ‘military
security’ actually results in undermining efforts to provide basic quality of fe to thase
vulnerable groups hit hard by global economic crisis, This wasting is heavy, beyond
comprehension,
This international workshop Is to set grounds for launching a new civil movement for peace
and disarmament in the region beyond the borders, It will particularly focus on critically
reviewing military-security strategies vis-a-vis immediate agenda cf civil priorities, and
gather various suggestions to build trust and foster coexistence towards a peace regime,
In doing so, we wish to create international solidarity for transforming security paradigms
and policies of each government in the region so that we can move away from the ever-
wasteful military-security strategies that nurture unnecessary fear and disbelief of living
together,
We look forward to having your valuable presence and contribution to this workshop.
