AP English Language and Composition Grading Policy

In order to maintain uniformity and fairness in assessment and to better prepare students for the
AP Exam and higher level English courses, the following grading policies will be used for all AP
English Language and Composition classes for all teachers.

Late Work Policy

Formula for calculating score deduction for late work applies to all assessments on which
students may work on at home. One day is defined as one partial or full day past the beginning of
class on the due date including holidays and weekends.
 One dayGrade  90%=Final Grade
 Two daysGrade  80%=Final Grade
 Three daysGrade  70%=Final Grade
 Four daysGrade  50%=Final Grade
 Five daysGrade  0%=Zero

Assessment Types:

The following list categorizes all assessments that may be given through the year:
 Internal Exam: Multiple Choice, Short Response, Essay Response, Essay Composition
 Quizzes: True False, Identification, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary
 Tests: Multiple Choice, Reading Comprehension, Passage Based Response, Short
Answer, Identification, Vocabulary
 Essays: Research, Literary Analysis, Synthesis, Evaluation, Persuasive
 Timed In Class Essays: Response, Synthesis, Persuasive, Literary Analysis
 Participation: Seminars, Discussions, Group work, Preparation, General Participation
 Homework: Reading, Short Response, Literary Response, Research, Term Lists
 Projects and other assessments: Speech, Multimedia Projects, Mock AP Exams

Grading Scheme:

The following is the distribution of weighting for various assignments. Standardized Uniform
Assessments (SUA) are assessed using common criteria and grading of these assessments are
peer reviewed by all teachers. Approximately six main works will be studied by every class each
semester, associated with each of these works will be SUAs that account for 60% of the final
semester grade. Other assessments may be waited differently at teacher’s discretion.
 Semester One ExamPassage Based Multiple Choice (30%), Short Response on Studied
Works (30%), Essay (20%+20%=40%)  20% Semester One Grade
 Semester Two ExamPassage Based Multiple Choice (45%), Literary Essay (20%),
Synthesis Essay (20%), Passage Based Essay (15%),  20% Semester Two Grade
 Standardized Uniform AssessmentsTests, Essays, Projects 60% Semester Grade
 Other AssessmentsQuizzes, Homework, Projects, Participation 20% Semester Grade
