BUCKLING CONSIDERATIONS
 l=Length of column=Lifting height H+ Half the
height of Nut=H+ h/2

For circular cross section of diameter dc

K=Radius of gyration=

Actual slenderness ratio=l/k if less than 30 there is

no buckling .If it is more than 30 , then there is
possibility of Buckling
BUCKLING CONSIDERATIONS
 Since one end of the screw is fixed in the nut &
other end is free, n=1/4=0.25
 The boundary between short & long column is

 The ratio (l/k) obtained by above equation is

called critical slenderness ratio
If actual slenderness ratio is less than critical
slenderness ratio ,the screw should be treated as
short column & ref Johnsons eq. & if its more then
screw is treated as long column & ref Eulers eq.
BUCKLING CONSIDERATIONS

 According to Johnsons equation for short column

 S yt  l 2 
Pcr  S yt A 1    
 4n E  k  
2

 According to Euler's equation for long column

n 2 EA
Pcr  2
l
 
k
For screw should be safe against buckling W< Pcr
