2. Lacan-Freud Similarities

3. Lacan- Bio

4. Mirror Stage

5. Language and the Unconscious

- the ucs is structured like a language
- man speaks… but it is because the symbol has made him man
- the signifier represents the subject for another signifier
- the subject is divided (by language or discourse)
- language and its structures exist prior to the moment at which each subject, at a
certain point in his mental development, makes his entry into it

6. The Three (Four?) Orders

7. Reworking of Freudian Concepts

- it is up to you to be a Lacanian. As far as I am concerned, I am a Freudian
- those aspects of the symbolic father that become fixed are the Names-of-the-
Father

8. Jouissance- Need Demand Desire

- Lack. Loss. Fantasy.

9. Objects- Objet Petit a. Other Poig lime

- subject $
- the subject is divided (by language or discourse)

10. Four Discourses

11. Psychopathology
- there is a foreclosure of the Names-of-the-Father in psychosis
- perversion = pere version (pere = father) [the symbolic father separates the child
from the motherer and so is identified with taboo and enjoyment
- the pervert makes himself the instrument of the jouissance of the other
- the pervert, through the fact of his disavowal, is divided between his recognition
of the reality that the mother has no penis and the fact that he attributes a phallus to her
- at the heart of the obsessional’s symptoms – his fundamental fantasy – is not one
hidden desire (like the hysteric) but two mutually exclusive ones (in the ‘Real’)
- in hysteria, there is one main desire that the hysteric does not properly recognize
on his or her own. Instead, they overemphasize the importance of other people’s desires
and underemphasize their own.

12. Feminine Sexuality

- the woman does not exist
- there is no such thing as a sexual relationship
- what mystics have in common with women is a special relationship to the
Infinite
- the relation between the sexes will turn around a “to be a phallus” and on a “to
have a phallus”

13. Mathematics and Lacan

14. Ethics and the Meaning of Psychoanalysis

15. Psychoanalytic Applications and Implications

- the Meaning of Life is the life of meaning
- human beings are retarded chimps
