THERMODYNAMICS
(Mechanical Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE questions
All questions carry equal marks
?????

1. (a) Define property and classify it with proper examples.

(b) Define heat and work and explain why neither is a properly.

2. (a) Write the unit of temperature and explain the International fixed points.
(b) Explain in detail the ideal gas temperature scale.

3. Explain the different curves (lines) in the mollier diagram and explain the construction of
mollier diagram in detail.

4. The pressure in an automobile tyre depends on the temperature of the air in the tyre. When
the air temperature is 20C, the pressure gauge reads 200 kPa. If the volume of the tyre is 0.03
m3 , determine the pressure rise in the tyre when the air temperature in the tyre rises to 55o C.
Also find the amount of air that must be bled off to restore pressure to its original value at this
temperature, Take atmospheric pressure as 100 kPa.

5. A vessel is divided into three compartments (a), (b), and (c) by two partitions. Part (a) contains
Oxygen and has a volume of 0.15 m3 , (b) has a volume of 0.25 m3 and contains Nitrogen, while
(c) is 0.05 m3 and holds Carbon diaoxide. All three parts are at a pressure of 2.5 bar and
a temperature of 150 C. When the partitions are removed and the gases mix, determine the
change of entropy of each constituent, the final pressure in the vessel and the partial pressure
of each gas. The vessel may be taken as being completely isolated from its surroundings.

6. Two engines are to operate on Otto and Diesel cycles with the following data: Maximum
temperature 1500 K, exhaust temperature 750 K. State of air at the beginning of compression
0.1 MPa, 310 K. Estimate the compression ratios, the maximum pressures, efficiencies, and rate
of work outputs (for 1 kg/min of air) of the respective cycles.

7. (a) What is refrigeration? How is ice and dry ice used for the purpose of refrigeration?
(b) A refrigeration plant produces 0.14 kg/s of the ice at -5o C from water at 33o C. If the power
required to drive the plant is 24 kW, determine the capacity of the ice plant in tonnes and
the actual COP (cp of ice = 2.2 kJ/kg K).

8. (a) Explain the control volume concept and its significance along with control surface.
(b) Derive the equation of continuity for a simple flow process.
