Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. A parabolic arch rib, 20 m span and 3 m rise is hinged at the abutments and the crown and carries a
point load of 10 kN at 7.5 m from the left hand hinge. Calculate the horizontal thrust and the bending
moment at a section 7.5 m form right hand hinge. What is the value of the greatest bending moment
in the arch, and where does it occur? [16]
2. A parabolic arch, hinged at the ends has a span 30 m and rise 5 m. A concentrated load of 12 kN acts
at 10 m from the left hinge. The second moment of area varies as the secant of the slope of the rib
axis. Calculate
(a) the horizontal thrust and the reactions at the hinges,
(b) the maximum bending moment anywhere on the arch. [16]
3. Explain the Portal method for analyzing a building frame subjected to horizontal forces. [16]
4. A continuous beam ABCD, 11 m long, is fixed at ends A and D. The first span of length 4 m is loaded
with a point load of 8 kN acting at 1.5 m from left support, the second span of length 4 m is loaded
with a UDL of intensity 3 kN/m and the third is loaded with a point load of 6 kN acting at 2 m from
right support. Spans AB, BC and CD have moments of Inertia of I, 1.5I and I respectively and are of
the same material. Using the slope deflection method, calculate the moments at the supports, if the
support B sinks by 5 mm downwards. Take I = 93×106 mm4 and E= 2.1×105 N/mm2 . [16]
5. A S.S. beam ABC is continuous over two spans AB and BC of 6m and 5m respectively .The span AB
is carrying a u.d.l of 20 KN/M and the span BC is carrying a u.d.l of 20KN/M and the span BC is
carrying a point load of 50KN at a distance of 3m from B. Find the support moment at B. And also
draw BMD. Use moment distribution method. [16]
6. Explain Kani’s method for frames with side sway. [16]
7. A continuous beam ABC is fixed at A and simply supported at B&C. The span AB is 5m and carries
a u.d.l of 20 KN/m. The span BC is 3m and carries a u.d.l of 10 KN/m. Determine the moments at
A & B using Kani’s method and draw BMD. [16]
8. (a) Obtain the stiffness matrix for a general beam element.
(b) Explain the analysis using stiffness method. [8+8]
