Questions about you

The following questions ask you to describe some key activities that you have been involved with in more
detail. In no more than 150 words per question please focus on the role that you personally played when
describing these activities.

1 In Shell we often work in challenging environments and have to strive to achieve our objectives.
3 Please describe your most outstanding non-academic achievement highlighting your approach to any
significant difficulties faced in meeting your objective(s).
During my internship period at Kenya Commercial Bank IT department , I was assigned with project of
installing and training users on a web based e-learning system. I managed to do this project in over 10
branches countrywide. The project involved re-designing the installation manual since the original version
was too technical. On completion of this task, I went to the branches where I would install the system in
one of the servers. This would be followed by performing a training session with the users using dummy
courses and elaborating the procedure of applying and benefits accrued from using the system. The training
sessions enabled me to clarify my role of being there avoid the situation of encountering difficult and
problematic employees who would request me to do something that I did not have the capacity to do it.

1 In Shell we have a diverse mix of men and women who sometimes have different ideas on how to proceed.
4 The ability to draw on these differences, influence others and then move forward with a common
purpose is critical. Please describe a challenging occasion, which required your persuasive skills
and your ability to organise other people in order to reach a successful resolution.
During the ICT development Expo held at KICC from 7th to 10th Feb 2007, the organizing committee of the
Expo held a competition between 5 kenyan universities namely Kenyatta, Nairobi, USIU, Strathmore and
JKUAT. To win the competition we had to gather as much votes as possible from the audience. I recommended
to the team the three IT emerging trends in the Kenyan scenario i.e. E-learning, E-monitoring, E-health.
On reaching a consensus, I organized all the team members to research on the topics and agree on a
framework on how to deliver to our target audience .
Branding was done on our stands to attract more people. After the three day expo, the Strathmore team
managed to gather most votes and won the overall cash price of Kshs. 50,000 which was divided equally
between the university and the student competitors

1 The energy business provides a dynamic working environment and our ability to initiate change is key
5 to ensuring that we retain our competitive edge. Please describe the most innovative change that you
have initiated and what you did to implement this change.
Working as an intern at KCB exposed me to numerous problems that can exist in the workplace. In the IT
department all major processed were automated hence one would not identify a problem easily. While dealing
with a hardware problem in the Procurement department, I realized that the department stored its contract
records in files. It was evident that retrieval of information would be a headache i.e. Perusing through
volumes of files in trying to get information matching a certain criteria. I proposed to them a solution
by creating a small database where they could centralize all their records for easy retrieval and storage.
The database was created using Microsoft Access and after basic training, the users were able to use the
system. The feedback that I received was encouraging that I pursued in enhancing the same system.

1 Due to the complexity of the business we pursue around the world, critical thinking and analytical
6 skills are essential. To help us evaluate these skills, please analyse fully the main issues
associated with responsible use of water and how you would handle the challenges that you see on a
global basis. (Please use your own analysis of the challenges and some of the broader implications.
We do not expect you to research this area.)
Nairobi’s urban population has been increasing rapidly over the past few years. Recently the Nairobi Water
and Sewage Company announced the introduction of water rationing due to environmental and other factors.
In order to conserve water during this trying time and other future occurances, basic social behaviours
need to be changed to effect this i.e.
- Rinse dishes in a basin filled with water rather than running water from a tap
- Leaking taps and pipes need to be replaced/repaired once identified.
- Flush the toilet when necessary. Don’t use it to flush toilet paper

1 Please add any additional information that you would like to highlight in relation to your
7 application. (Personal Development Award applicants, please describe your plans and what you expect
to gain from the experience.)
Successful companies are what they are because of their investment in their employees. By working in shell
I will have the opportunity of progressing in my career by taking advantage of its training and
development schemes. Shell’s core businesses provide a good framework where one can explore the best
opportunity for self development. In that connection:
- Pursue professional certifications in my area of interest plus a masters degree
- Pursue in working in different roles within the Shell framework so as to understand the business
better
